Please explain this fashion 'style'

I've seen countless photos in online stores of women wearing shirts/blouses with only half the top front tucked in.

Please explain this fashion style to me as I just don't get it.

To me it either looks like you only had time to half tuck the shirt in before you left the house after getting dressed or when you went to the loo, half of the shirt got tucked in but you were going for the full untucked look (to me the other closest thing is when someone goes to the loo and the back of their skirt gets stuck in their pants).

It just looks untidy to me.

I want to understand the style is all.

I can never get it to look right. So I either do a full tuck, tie shirt ends in a knot or leave entirely out depending on what looks best with individual tops and jeans/trousers.

I haven't seen people doing the French tuck for a long time.

I copied this styling when I bought the shirt, from Marie Marot

www.mariemarot.com/en/product/gilda/

It's still everywhere in London. I do it for work but properly, not half a shirt tail!

BungleandGeorge · 11/06/2022 14:48

French tuck can look good but only works with certain tops. Tucking one side on looks odd I agree

KittenKong · 11/06/2022 14:53

I seem to remember it trying to be ‘a thing’ a few years back - but it’s back with a vengeance. Can’t say I’ve ever looked ‘around the back’ to see what’s going on there.

It looks silly. Like when men wear their trousers hanging below the meridian with their but-cheeks hanging over the waistband. I always have the urge to tuck and hoik.

MinnieMinimal · 11/06/2022 14:53

The half a shirt tail thing is not for me, but I can't say I have particularly strong feelings about it on other people. But not one I could pull off

Mamette · 11/06/2022 14:58

A french tuck can look ok depending on the outfit- top not too long and skirt/ trousers not too high waisted- high waisted things need a full tuck imo (or a cropped top).

But this half-shirt-front-in half-out thing is just messy looking! I can see that models can get away with it but if I did it I’d look like I went wrong coming out of the loo.

KittenKong · 11/06/2022 14:58

But it’s messy… it’s not straight… it’s lopsided…

TheOGCCL · 11/06/2022 15:05

I think it’s because the fashion is so oversized at the moment. Half the reviews on M&S are people saying how big the item is but its meant to be like that. To avoid looking like a total bag lady swathed in fabric, you can define your waist a little, which is often a woman’s slimmest part. It’s trickier to do than it looks, getting that balance between this just falls like this, I didn’t make any effort, and just messy.

PuppyMonkey · 11/06/2022 15:06

French tuck, half shirt tuck, whatever, it looks very silly on everyone - including the models. It doesn’t emphasise your waist, either, it emphasises your inability to dress properly. Wink

Honestly, the story of the Emperor’s New Clothes was written for a reason, you know. Grin

Honestly, the story of the Emperor’s New Clothes was written for a reason, you know.

Yeah but that reason had nothing to do with clothes or fashion...

PuppyMonkey · 11/06/2022 15:31

I meant in the sense that everyone told the king he looked fabulous in his new suit but in reality…

It is very in right now. DS is fashion obsessed and he often has a French tuck in his shirts. A beautiful friend does too. I tried. i looked like I'd been to the loo and f accidentally got my shirt caught in my waistband. Not a good look.

That's what it looks like on most people. It's also terribly trying too hard.

I think it looks lovely if you have the right figure

Not for me I'm afraid

Nor me!

FingersofFish · 11/06/2022 17:32

I love a French tuck. I am struggling to find the right tops for it though

soberfabulous · 11/06/2022 17:34

I love a French tuck! Been doing it for years.

It came to prominence recently with Tan France on Queer Eye who recommends it to everyone.

Anytimeiseeit · 11/06/2022 19:18

I’ve always tucked tops in at the front a bit. It is much more flattering for my shape, don’t care whether it’s fashionable or not.

Isabelle70 · 11/06/2022 19:29

I have started the tuck a bit in at the front and centre and I look much smarter rather than loose blouse hanging down flapping in the breeze.

Maireas · 27/06/2022 12:35

I like a French tuck. I don't think it looks messy at all. It gives form and symmetry to outsize clothing which is currently fashionable.
I do it to give some shape to a loose outfit.
I don't know why it's called a French tuck, it possibly originated with stylists there. Not that it makes a difference.
