Itchy scalp shampoo

Sorry not really stylish or beauty but tips please for an itchy scalp. My scalp is generally sensitive and a lot of shampoos irritate me.

T-Gel isn't cutting it.

I've ordered more Body Shop Ginger but sometimes that doesn't work.

Any great shampoos I'm missing?

My scalp gets like this. Baby Shampoo all the way.

GCBookseller1 · 08/06/2022 23:17

I find Simple shampoo the best for me. Anything fragranced seems to set my scalp off, so I stick with Simple.

workinprogressju · 08/06/2022 23:17

I too have an itchy scalp that gets easily irritated and I find Simple shampoo really good.

MadameDragon · 08/06/2022 23:19

Nizoral.
You might also want to check whether the shampoos that irritate you contain gluten as this can be a symptom of coeliac disease.

LBF2020 · 08/06/2022 23:21

I'm using Aveeno skin relief at the moment. I find I have to swap shampoo every few months as I start to get itchy/irritated scalp if I don't.

greengoose21b · 08/06/2022 23:53

My suggestion would be to just keep away from anything with SLS.

Holland and Barrett Sea Magic shampoo is my favourite but I can use plenty of others these days as long as I check the ingredients.

If I mistakenly use something with SLS in it I am scratching and itching within no time. I have the same problem with SLS in toothpaste...one accidental slip up and I have a mouth full of ulcers the day after.

Fumnudge · 09/06/2022 00:09

Gruum bar soap solved mine, They have offers quite frequently luckily and I haven't had to swap it after a while to prevent build up, which I had to do with off the shelf shampoos.

KateTush · 09/06/2022 00:20

Defo what PP said - get a sulfate free shampoo. They are usually more expensive but the relief from itching is bliss.

De88 · 09/06/2022 00:33

After years of trying all the shampoos, and t gel stopped working for me, Gp prescribed me with betnovate which does the trick along with own brand baby shampoo. I suppose it depends why you have this?, suspect mines hormonal as I never have this when pregnant. I'll try that Sea Magic shampoo though, thanks!

Summer15coming · 09/06/2022 00:47

Moogoo is the only thing that works for me. Better even than the medicinal type like Polytar. I was literally just thinking I need to order some as I tried to get away with Aveeno and my scalp is now driving me crazy.

JazzyBBG · 09/06/2022 07:23

Thank you all. Baby shampoo? I did used to use it occasionally when the kids were little but it didn't seem to do much will try again!

I have this and baby shampoo makes it worse. I stick to the body shop ginger or if I’ve run out I try Holland and Barrett organic shampoos and they all seem to work. The doctor can prescribe special shampoos too

Gr33ngr33ngr4ss · 09/06/2022 21:53

I can't use baby shampoo. It depends why you're itchy.

If your doctor can tell you if it's seborrhoeic dermatitis or psoriasis, you can choose the right treatment.

If it's SD, don't let your scalp stay damp - dry it properly and use a scalp brush in the shower and I find Nizoral clears a breakout. Tgel then holds it off for a few months.

Could it be nits?

SwimmingOnEggshells · 09/06/2022 21:53

Nizoral, I swear by it!

dempsey73 · 09/06/2022 22:04

Ethique Heali Kiwi works much better for me than Body Shop Ginger or Nizoral

Laur89 · 09/06/2022 22:15

@JazzyBBG I also have this so I'm interested if you have found anything that helps!

Moosake · 09/06/2022 22:29

Is it flakey? If it isn't try Eucerin calming urea scalp treatment.

Ilovetheseboots · 09/06/2022 22:31

Nizoral for me

Basilbrushgotfat · 09/06/2022 22:32

Ohhh this could explain why I'm having a bit of a SD breakout, I let my hair dry naturally in the spring and summer. Thanks!

The only shampoo I've found works long term for me is a custom formula from Function of Beauty. It is very gentle. I also use their conditioner which does wonders for my scalp.

Not cheap but for me 100% worth it. The only other one that was OK was kerastase bain specifique but that's even more expensive.

I have very sensitive skin that dries out very quickly.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 09/06/2022 22:34

Redken Scalp Relief is good.

Selok · 09/06/2022 22:36

My daughter suffered from itchy and very dry scalp for ages! She has been using a shampoo we got from our local health shop called Mogoo - since she was 8 and she is 17 now still using it- brilliant shampoo and conditioner- google it I am sure you can get online too!

whereamu · 09/06/2022 22:38

I have had partial success with
kerastase bain specifique. It is expensive but you don't need lunch each time. I was going to try the Philip Kingsley itchy scalp green one next as I would like to clear it completely but may try the Magoo one mentioned here first.

whereamu · 09/06/2022 22:39

Does anyone know if the magoo one is ok for highlighted hair?
I'm not sure if I've read some of them strip the hair of colour?

perenniallymessy · 09/06/2022 22:45

I've tried so many different shampoos over the years- strong medicated ones and super gentle.

The best for me is Head & Shoulders- especially the super moisturising ones. And I have to wash at least every other day and really scrub my scalp. Then when I get a really bad flare up I have a steroid lotion from the doctor that helps- I try to use it as a last resort but when I get crusty bleeding sections it's the only thing that works.
