Have 2 boys and now seem to spend inordinate amounts of time standing in muddy fields....

Now it's colder I just don't seem to have the right coat:

  • black puffa is a bit short
  • long per una one is a bit smart
  • too cold for just a fleece

I've been wearing a waterproof jacket with a fleece underneath, but it feels really scruffy, and I've noticed other mums seem to have more trendy, mid-length, warm looking coats.

Have looked, but can't really find anything that seems quite right. Don't really want wool, as it would be useful if it was at least showerproof?

In days of old, it would have been a Barbour I suspect, but I've kind of moved on from my sloane days now!

i bought a duvet masquerading as a coat from m and s recently.... £79. not a thing of great beauty but sooooo warm. was driven to it by ds1 being in football teeam and playing outdoors in all weathers.

It isn't a coat I need for the touchline, but a pair of wellies.

I've just bought one from Gap - a bit like this one fifth one down, in black with black (fake) fur on their sale, down from £88 to £57. It is SERIOUSLY warm - you wouldn't need many layers underneath! The only size they had was XL, and I'm size 14, but it's fine - the sleeves are nicely long, and the length is just below my knee. Roll on the playground wait this afternoon!

Thanks - I really don't think I could wear a full length puffa - they are very caterpillar-like aren't they??

Quite like the Lands End type one though....

I bought a nice parka with enormous furry hood from Uniqlo just for this very purpose.

It's quilted as well. In the sale reduced to £30 a bargain

Ski jacket, slightly longer puffa (not the long ones, just the ones that cover your bum), barbour (but yes a bit passe and not terribly warm anyway).
Cod - I wear my chaps over my jeans in very cold weather - ds3 said "mummmy you look silly"
me "it's not a blommin fashion parade"

yes but they are warm cod -just plain black, no tassels

primark had some nice cheap thermals you could wear under trousers. thin layer are way ahead for cold days. also tchibo have good skiwear sale.

Legacy · 17/01/2008 10:41

Hmmm - think it has to be just 3/4 length though - full length trails in the mud when you're crouching down to re-tie boots or listen to small child etc etc....

I don't really know Land's End - thought it was a brand for mature, middle-aged americans. Am I wrong?

Legs - I wear leggins underneath Cords (cords are far warmer than jeans) then sometimes waterproof trews over the top.

Top - I wear a decent top (to look half decent in the club house afterwards) hoodie, fleece then waterproof jacket.

I DO NOT look, cool, trendy or smart

I DO feel warm and dry..

Also make up important - just because watching sport and dressed like a sport watching person, does not mean that you should go without makeup, find waterproof mascara a must (far too much rain during sport watching)

Hair is always a problem though. It nevers look decent after sport watching - either wind hair or hat hair.. any suggestions?

I have been eyeing this up.

Legacy · 17/01/2008 10:58

Isn't that the Hungry Caterpillar one??

Oh well, each to their own...

Anyone know if Land's End is on the large size - I'm falling between a S and a M on their Size guide.... (am a 'generous' size 12 in UK)

ahundredtimes · 17/01/2008 11:00

lol. Yes it must be. There's a slimmer shorter one too. Might get it in another colour, I quite like the brown.

Legacy · 17/01/2008 11:04

Yes - brown would be better IMHO.....
