Need a really moisturising moisturiser!

I've always had oily skin but the menopause has given me really dry skin and I don't really know which moisturiser to use as I'm so used to using oil free moisturisers.
My daytime routine is Hada Labo hyaluronic acid on damp skin and I'm currently using an Aldi Day cream on top but my skin is still dry and flaky. I use glycolic acid maybe 1 night a week and tretinoin from Dermatica two or three nights per week. I slug on the remaining two nights with oil, Cicaplast, snail mucin and maybe Vaseline but my skin is still rubbish!
I need a really hydrating daytime moisturiser and would love a recommendation.

Nivea blue pot
Astral
La Roche Posay Creme Riche
Weleda Skin Food

Sounds like you need to ditch the oil free.

imstilljenny2 · 02/06/2022 21:29

Yes I ditched the oil free moisturiser a while ago and I'm now using an Aldi daytime moisturiser. I wonder if the Nivea blue pot would be too greasy under make up??

I struggle to find a really hydrating moisturiser. The only ones that have really worked are:

  • M&S 8 hour sleep night cream
  • Elemis hydraboost
  • clarins hydration range (especially the serum)

I've also found that less impressive moisturisers work better if I use serum first. The Superdrug hydrating range has a good serum for less than £5

Another vote for Weleda skin food. Miracle cream! I use the original at night and skin food light in the day, my dryness and tightness has totally gone and I get fewer breakouts too.

thisisit77 · 02/06/2022 21:36

Balmonds skin salvation balm. Gives a gorgeous dewy look to the skin too

imstilljenny2 · 02/06/2022 21:43

Thanks everyone-some great ideas. I'll check them out. I'll get some Weleda skin food for night time I think. It smells lovely doesn't it?

Just checking you are drinking enough water?

I'd probably up my use of the cicaplast, using it every night and maybe even in the day too including buffering the tret.

Nivea Soft is very moisturising imo, and cheap!

travailtotravel · 02/06/2022 21:54

Mine drastically improved when i stripped it all right back. Nivea blue pot twice a week at night. A supermarket moisturiser otherwise (garner organics I'm pleasantly surprised how gentle and effective they are the night lavandin stuff is very soothing). A ton more water, basic vitamins and honestly, citrus fruit consumption. Can see it in my face when the diet is good. I just stopped using serum, retinol etc. Huge improvement.

I’ve always found the Boots No7 range of face creams to be very good, more so than the likes of Elemis of which I’m also a fan. I remember a few years back, no7 was all the rage, they were labelled the most effective moisturiser or something to that effect.

Roundlampshade · 02/06/2022 21:57

Are you exfoliating? Slough off the dead skin and your moisturiser will be more effective.

I also think you’re using too many different products.

kenadams86 · 02/06/2022 21:58

Also came on to say weleda skin food

toastfiend · 02/06/2022 22:01

Oil never did anything to hydrate my skin - and I tried a lot! I was also told that hyaluronic acid can actually have a dehydrating effect because of the way it works - I can't remember the exact explanation I was given, but my skin is better since I stopped using it.

I get eczema and generally dry skin, mine has been much better since I stripped back my routine a lot to just a simple cleanser (one for sensitive skin helps), Skin+Me, moisturiser or night cream. I really like the Neal's Yard Almond moisturiser for day time and their Vitamin E and Avocado one at night. They feel nourishing without being greasy and don't break me out.

Best thing I've found, though, is Ren Rescue Mask. I use it overnight 2-3 times a week and it's so soothing and hydrating, gets rid of any dry, flaky patches and makes my skin really glow. Would highly recommend it for anyone suffering from dry or irritated skin.

BonjourCrisette · 02/06/2022 22:17

Nuxe face creams are miraculous. They are pricey but I would highly recommend. I also like various stuff from The Ordinary - there is a quiz on their website to get recommendations.

imstilljenny2 · 02/06/2022 22:20

Great, thanks all. I think stripping everything back might be the best idea. I think I'll stop the hyaluronic acid and see if that helps.
I do exfoliate-I use glycolic acid and use a soft microfibre flannel. I can't use a terry flannel as it really strips my skin.
I drink quite a lot of water. I work in a hospital so I'm in a mask for 9 hours a day which really dehydrates me so I make sure I drink loads of water. I probably don't drink as much when I'm not working so I'll try and drink more on those days.
Thanks

Embryolisse les hydratants - lait creme concentre. Game changer for my menopausal flaky skin. Get it from boots

imstilljenny2 · 02/06/2022 22:30

@itbemay I've seen make up artists use this as a primer and it looks amazing. I'll give it a try

I don't find the day cream rich enough for dry skin.

Gwenhwyfar · 03/06/2022 13:51

"I was also told that hyaluronic acid can actually have a dehydrating effect because of the way it works - I can't remember the exact explanation I was given, but my skin is better since I stopped using it."

I think it's if you use it on dry skin or if you live somewhere with dry air because what it does is lock hydration in.

Bibbetybobbity · 03/06/2022 13:53

Another vote for Weleda skin food- I use a thick layer like a face mask before bed and it just soaks in (mostly!) overnight.

KalaniM · 03/06/2022 15:37

My skin got dry due to oestrogen loss, I took wild yam capsules and things improved quickly.

thesunwillout · 03/06/2022 15:46

Garnier organic Rosy Glow 3 in 1 youth cream.
I'm sensitive/dry skinned and react to so much, but not this.
It just keeps rubbing in but in a very soft way
Love it.

JamOrCreamOnFirst · 03/06/2022 15:54

I have really dry skin. I use a water based serum first, and then an eczema-friendly basic moisturiser (currently cetaphil eczema version) with a pump of jojoba oil mixed into it - I just pump them both on my hand and mix them together immediately before putting it on my face.

But the really key thing for dry skin, if you are new to it, is not to dry your face out even more when cleansing. If your face feels really tight after cleansing - when it's dried, but before moisturising - then your cleanser is probably adding to the dryness. I'd suggest trying a very gentle moisturising cleanser if you aren't already, and cleansing oils can be really good too.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 03/06/2022 16:02

Hyralonic is hopeless for me, does the opposite of what it's meant to.

CeraVe is fantastic and will repair the skin barrier. I love the stuff!

DreamloverTealover · 03/06/2022 16:16

Another Nivea vote here! Blue tub is good for night time and Nivea Soft is lovely under my make up (I don't wear much though)
