Need a really moisturising moisturiser!

I've always had oily skin but the menopause has given me really dry skin and I don't really know which moisturiser to use as I'm so used to using oil free moisturisers.
My daytime routine is Hada Labo hyaluronic acid on damp skin and I'm currently using an Aldi Day cream on top but my skin is still dry and flaky. I use glycolic acid maybe 1 night a week and tretinoin from Dermatica two or three nights per week. I slug on the remaining two nights with oil, Cicaplast, snail mucin and maybe Vaseline but my skin is still rubbish!
I need a really hydrating daytime moisturiser and would love a recommendation.

I love the Nivea blue pot, since using it my skin looks so much better so much so that I've stopped wearing foundation, I just cover the occasional hormonal spot with concealer now.

I've been reading about using less on my face (I follow Jessica Defino) and now just wash my face skin with water in the shower and then apply the Nivea and some spf in the morning and in the evening use baby oil to remove eye makeup and then put the Nivea on again.

My skin's never felt better and looks more alive and smooth and even and less grey and it's so nice not wearing foundation, especially in summer. I thought I had crap skin and a dull complexion but it's so much better now, especially with freckles coming through I'm glad I don't feel the need to cover them.

Purplehonesty2 · 03/06/2022 16:37

Stop using the dermatica. It dried my skin out SO much!

I'm on a wild mint 5 step skin care system now and OMG it's so lovely. My dry skin is banished and glowy!

imstilljenny2 · 03/06/2022 16:41

@Purplehonesty2 yes the tret really dries my skin out!
I think oestrogen loss is definitely a factor but I'm on HRT so replacing my hormones as much as I can.
I've ordered the Weleda skin food and the Embrolliese (?sp) one. I used some Cicaplast this morning and my skin feels better already.

I use it if I get a spot but that’s it now!

imstilljenny2 · 03/06/2022 17:28

@JamOrCreamOnFirst yes my face feels tight just after washing. I currently double cleanse each night to remove my make up and spf. I use Una Brennan oil first then Cerave moisturising cream face wash after. I might swap Cerave cram wash to the oil wash and see if that helps.

Aveeno Cream With Colloidal Oats. Amazing stuff. Really plumps the skin.

JennyForeigner · 03/06/2022 19:33

This will sound mean but child's farm baby moisturiser is great! So good I nicked mine from our two-year-old and haven't looked back.

FelicityFlops · 03/06/2022 19:44

A year ago I started using Venn products. Massage in, wash off cleanser and then a lotion that is all in one, so no more serum etc. Skin looks amazing and I am over 60 :-)

VanillaIce1 · 03/06/2022 21:59

I use a Clinique one it's lovely it feels very lovely on and thick but it soon sinks in and I find it creates a nice base before my makeup. Skin seems to of improved since using it too. I'm not sure what it's called will check emails!.

Fancyateapottea · 03/06/2022 22:44

I can really recommend the DHC double cleanse (oil and then a powder). They are so gentle. I used to use a balm or a lotion cleanser and my skin would feel too sensitive to do a double cleanse but these products aren’t stripping at all

Tinks15 · 03/06/2022 23:00

Is Weleda skin food ok for all skin types?

Smileandactlikeitsfine · 03/06/2022 23:30

Palmers cocoa butter lotion on face and body is superior if you like the smell of it. I'm 45, perimenopausal and nothing else works for me.

JamOrCreamOnFirst · 04/06/2022 01:33

Hi OP that's actually really interesting - I know Cerave works for lots of people, but it's got something in it that lots of other people are really sensitive to, me included. It makes me even drier and more reactive. And the Cerave moisturisers bring my face out in hives! So annoying as I know it's a miracle product/brand for many people.

But yes def try swapping that out and see how you go.

eurochick · 04/06/2022 06:56

I would think it is the tret that is the issue. Your skin probably needs a break from it.

weleda skin food is organic and contains many potential allergens (calendula, lanolin, limonene etc).

it's great for dry skin if you agree with it. it's almost magic on dry, cracked skin on hands.

itbemay · 04/06/2022 08:32

imstilljenny2 · 02/06/2022 22:30

@itbemay I've seen make up artists use this as a primer and it looks amazing. I'll give it a try

You'll love it. Someone recommended it on here a while ago and I ordered a small one to try. It's perfect as a stand alone moisturiser, I add a bit more as a night cream and also can wear under make up. Hope you find something that works

Covetthee · 04/06/2022 08:52

Other than weleda skin food which is amazing i would aldo recommend Mario Badescu caviar night cream.. it’s incredibly moisturising and plumping.

DameCelia · 04/06/2022 09:01

Cerave cleanser from the States is fine for me, the European version (different rules on ingredients) gives me really dry skin.
If you're using tret have you tried ceramide capsules mixed into your night time moisturiser? That was the key for me, I love the Beauty Pie ones.

Tinks15 · 04/06/2022 09:27

Ok thank you @purplesequins i’m not so sure it would be ok for me then - I have quite sensitive skin that’s prone to breakouts

imstilljenny2 · 04/06/2022 09:51

@DameCelia interesting. I'm ditching the Cerave cleaner today I think! I haven't tried ceramide capsules but these sounds wonderfully moisturising.

Which Weleda is recommended. There are a few!

I like the original skinfood after a chemical peel. and in winter on my hands and shins where I tdnd to get cracked skin.
it's very rich.

weleda almond range is lovely too, a lot lighter than skin food.

both don't contain spf and as they are herbal costmetics contain common allergens. read the ingredients if you are sensitive to lanolin, calendula, limonene etc.

wibblewobbleball · 04/06/2022 21:17

Stop using so many actives at once - choose either retinol (dermatica) or glycolic. I would choose retinol. It'll make your face dry for about a week but then it should be fine. Don't add anything else in - very simple oil cleanser for make up removal, cream cleanser for morning, ditto a simple moisturiser. SPF in day. That should be plenty. You're chasing the impossible if you keep stripping your skin barrier with so many products and actives, and then try adding more stuff in to cover the damage. Try cicaplast for your moisturiser if your skin looks very red as well as being dry - it'll restore the barrier function.

Nivea blue pot
Astral
CeraVe
Weleda skin food

They're all lovely especially the nivea.
