By midday, my make-up (especially eyes) is very smudged.. I dint wear a lot, or mascara on lower lashes
I have invested in long wear liner, and also Urban Decays all-nighter fixing spray, which is supposed to be amazing..Still smudges! I use a little powder, but not too much
Is there any hope? I'm 40 btw
Thanks in advance:)

Do you put any powder around your eye area? It could be that there is excessive natural oils combined with eye cream which are melting the eye make up and causing the smudging.

I would conceal under the eyes and then powder on top to get it to dry down, and also use a lid primer with a shade of eyeshadow which matches your skin tone on the lid and hopefully you’ll see a difference.

BangingOn · 29/05/2022 09:25

I have very watery eyes and oily under eyes, so can look like I have two black eyes by lunchtime. I also like to tightline, which doesn’t help matters. After trial and error on many different products, I now use Urban Decay Potion in Eden on my lids and under eyes, then Huda Easy Bake over the top, leave for a few minutes and brush away the excess.

tabulahrasa · 29/05/2022 09:34

Try the setting spray before the make up...

cottagegardenflower · 29/05/2022 10:02

Is it the eye cream you wear underneath it? Maybe the night cream is still on your eyes. Perhaps try a primer?

Oceanus · 29/05/2022 14:27

You don't have to skip eye cream but it's meant to go mostly around the eye, most aren't even meant to go on eyelids and those that are I've been told you should use what's left on your fingers not dive into the pot for more.
After putting on the cream, wait for a bit and then: for the eyelids, go over with micellar water (before actually putting on makeup, to remove oil/cream, I'm not talking about using to remove makeup) and for under the eyes be sure to powder and then use MAC Fix + (this set the powder and stops mascara from sticking). I also usually skip mascara on the bottom lashes but that's a personal thing because I unwillingly touch my eyes too much.
Sb asked about non oil makeup removers? I like the micellar water from Bioderma but tbh my favourite are those dead cheap oil removers from Japan that are the price of a cup of coffee. My skin looooves them. I've bought the Lâncome one too and I'd just say take your money elsewehere or risk being disappointed.

NorthernSoul55 · 29/05/2022 14:50

I used to have a similar problem. I don't get on with tubing nascaras so use waterproof (No 7), I powder my eyelids before doing anything else, tightline top lid only...and keep my hands away from my eyes!

getoutofheree · 29/05/2022 14:53

It will happen easily if you're applying to a wet base. I use my retinol treatment and do my makeup once that's dried, my face being very dry and the liner and shadow going on nicely. I then moisturise very lightly with a mattifying moisturiser without touching the areas I've done.

I find this works and keeps my makeup non smudging.

You use retinol during the day? Or you're talking about when you do makeup in the evening? You know retinol reacts with light and stains the skin so should never be used during the day?... (Just checking you know! Ignore if you do!)

BatshitCrazyWoman · 29/05/2022 16:20

This used to happen to me, but doesn't now I use Barry M eye primer (seems the same as the Urban Decay one, but cheaper!), Revlon Colorstay eyeliner and Max Factor waterproof mascara.

Eye makeup stays on all day, and I take it off with the Nivea oily eye makeup remover. I don't find this too oily, I'm not allergic to it, it requires no rubbing (that Simple one feels like using water - useless!) - takes it all off. And I'm a contact lens wearer.

Eliphanbee · 05/06/2022 17:33

thank you, I usually only wait 5 minutes or so between eye cream and maks-up..Will wait for longer:)

Sorry OP, only just saw you asked for creams before!
It's so annoying having to wait for the cream to set in! Jeez, I'm sooooo bloody impatient, I can't be bothered much tbh! What I do is I put cream on, then I brush my teeth, my hair, potter about thinking about what I'm going to wear and by the time I get to make up, skin should be dry!
In the morning I like Bobbi Brown for the eyes, that gives me the best result with my concealer/corrector as my skin's getting on in age! hahah! But I used to really like Clinique. I'd go for one from Clinique if I were you and then upgrade only if necessary.
For the face I use the Hada Labo SPF50/primer/moisturiser (blue tub) -this one really must sink into the skin before you move on to makeup.
In the evening I usually use either a moisturising mist (Toleriane/Avène, great for lazy buggers like me) or a Rosehip gel/oil. Sometimes one of my eyelids gets really dry and I'll dab a bit of the rosehip gel on (magic!). The Rosehip gel I'm using is by a Spanish brand called Saluvital but the thing with rosehip is you have to keep buying & trying to see what works for you (if sb recommends a brand and it's crap, don't dismiss it, try another brand. More expensive doesn't equal more quality. I'd start cheap and when it works, you'll know. In my case I'm a tad bit red on the cheeks and great rosehip makes it disappear.
Tip: From experience, careful with Lâncome eye cream/balm as it's given me millia. Shiseido is pricey but it's usually worth it. Hada Labo never disappoints. Clinique is hit or miss. Elizabeth Arden (the brown ones everybody raves about aren't worth the price, I know because I spent years waiting for magic to happen and it never did).

Eliphanbee · 06/06/2022 07:08

thankyou, thats brilliant:) will give the products a go, and see how I get on (fingers crossed!)

Primer!

Hooded oily eyelids here. Nars works well, stops all my eye makeup transferring immediately to upper eyelid.

IloveJudgeJudy · 06/06/2022 08:46

I always wear an eye primer. I usually use one from Nyx. It's about £8 and lasts ages. It's made a big difference to my eye makeup staying power.

hattymattie · 06/06/2022 09:18

Nyx Epic Wear liquid eyeliner is the business . The only one I can trust - still on the hunt for a mascara.

Oceanus · 06/06/2022 10:11

@hattymattie I'm partial to waterproof mascaras from Maybelline (the chubby ones) and my favourite is the fuchsia one. I like Clinique (High Impact sth) too but those I only use because I'll get a sample here and there, I refuse to pay the same as I would for a lipstick, but that's a personal thing! haha!
Oh, btw I curl my lashes before I start putting on makeup but I put on mascara after I've put on the Fix+ or it'll smudge.

Triffid1 · 06/06/2022 10:14

I just wear any waterproof mascara and don't find it smudges at all.

Eye liner is trickier and is why I don't tend to use it on a day to day basis anymore. If I want a slightly more defined eye during the day, I use a dark eye shadow applied with a thin contoured brush along the top lid. It does sort of smudge slightly over the day, but in a way that works quite well for me. And can easily be topped up if necessary.

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 06/06/2022 10:22

I use By Terry mascara (the one that twists the brush to get either length or volume). It stays put pretty well and works too!

Catabogus · 06/06/2022 10:28

Those of you who use powder on your eyes, don’t you find it settles in the creases? How do you avoid this? I’d love to solve the smudging problem but powdery creases isn’t a good look.

hattymattie · 06/06/2022 10:31

Thanks Oceanus - I’ll give Maybelline a try.

TheVolturi · 06/06/2022 10:35

I have two Avon eye products that do not come off. If I fall asleep without talking off makeup which I know is really bad, it's still perfectly on in the morning and even survives the shower!
I will dig them out for the name of them if anyone's interested. One is an eyeshadow stick and the other is an eyeliner.

Oceanus · 06/06/2022 12:11

@Catabogus The Fix+ takes the powdery look away, after drying, the powder "disappears", if I've put on too much concealer or corrector I can't pat it down with my finger and it'll look great. If I skip the Fix+ I can't touch the powder with my fingers because it all kind of "slides" around and it looks a mess, because it hasn't been set, when I touch the cream it "moves" and will crease.
The Skindinavia sprays also take away the powdery look (and extend the duration but they're also $$$). The UD All-Nighter only extends makeup (or so they say) but it doesn't take the powdery look away.

Oceanus · 06/06/2022 12:12

Should read *if I've put on too much I CAN pat it down (after the Fix+)!

Oceanus · 06/06/2022 12:15

@MadameCholetsDirtySecret I haven't tried anything by that brand (yet)... I've heard it's good though! What else would you recommend by them?

Oceanus · 06/06/2022 12:21

@1990s I'm allergic to NARS foundation. It took me a while to accept it though... Even put it on my legs to see if I could get away with it because I couldn't bring myself to bin it but alas it had to go. I haven't been able to look at NARS the same! 😊
