Sloane Rangers! Do they exist now or have they morphed into something else? Struggling to think of a modern day one!

Is there a modern day sloane? Cressida Bonas Prince Harry's ex perhaps? Sienna Miller?
Is there a look or style that identify them now? The 80s sloane was very distinctive or is it more lifestyle based?

This is a great article! Interesting that Cressida Bonas was pictured, she was the first one I thought of when I tried to picture the modern Sloane.. Pippa Middleton too..

I have dc who went to well known independent London Day Schools. They are bloody scruffy though dd rocks it in a gold frock for £4.99 from H&M, a cheap beady necklace, long blonde hair, awful shoes and a general air of insouicance. And a huff and eye roll combined with a "oh for fecks sake ma". Two maimings in one ear, three in the other. Add in a nerdy but disgracefully rich bf and there you have it but it isn't the pearls, ballet pumps, Sheepy Jersey, velvet headband and polka dot skirt of yesteryear.

Perhaps we need a new handbook; my dc sum it up but it's not 80's definable there's a bit more edge to it.

Not red trousers in London. That is looked down on. Definitely too much of a stereotype and one for the country.

In London it’s just rich girl hair - expensive floaty dresses etc. ££££ spent on colourful maxi dresses.

the Sloane look was English and the thing about London now is that a lot of the rich people are international, so it’s harder to pin down the contemporary rich English look. Think it blends in w everyone else

Pippa is a good example. Faintly
Unfashionable

The real poshos I know are a mixed bag and some look like tramps 😁. But the trampy look will be just very very old, expensive pieces that still have "lots of life in them".

In terms of the sorts who have a public profile or who hang around in rich enclaves, it's all about being groomed to within an inch of your life. All about control. Not much flamboyance for either gender. Definitely no obviously fake teeth, boobs, bubble butts, or Dale Winton tans.

The last couple of days I have seen two incredibly chic women in my surrey town. Both earliesh morning

Woman one
Cream ankle.grazers, black t-shirt, cream.duster coat. Sunglasses. Straight, blond highlighted locks. Soft moccasin type loafers.

Woman two
Pale grey skinnies, jacquard grey dusterish coat, white trainers, sun glasses, blonde highlights, sunglasses, nice pram.

This sounds so much cooler!
Also think all Prince Harry's exes fit the bill.. Cressida, Chelsea, that girl Florence (Flee?!!) he had a type pre Meghan who I think is possibly American Sloane very preppy but with better teeth!

What I think of as sloany now is exactly like Pippa Middleton. It's expensive and looks perfectly inoffensive, but about 10 years 'older' style than you'd expect the person to be wearing.

And she has the rich girl hair perfected, athletic sporty figure & the discreet labels & lifestyle, I like her casual look...

Rosesand Hellebores you sent your children to a <shudders> day school? Oh dear.

lashy · 27/05/2022 23:07

@celiacanth seems to be describing 'serialloverdresser ' to a T (Instagram).
A very pretty woman who I've definitely seen recently wearing tight white jeans with a shirt, a fedora and carrying a Fairfax and Favor bag - I felt like shouting "bingo!" When I read her post Grin

Sloanes are class+money+England, and as a breed they’ve evolved to survive.

The rich in England aren’t English any more for a start, especially not in London. ‘Breeding’ is extinct as a criterion for membership unless you’re right up at the ducal end which tends to still have a few readies.

The new species is International Shiny, square dressers (that hasn’t changed, but the smart ones dress much more edgily than you’d guess) and hippy in speech only - they rebelled from the stuff upper lip aaaaages ago, and now it’s all therapy speak and short hops on a plane. Still loud and loads of bonking.

Supersimkin2 · 27/05/2022 23:17

Oh and thin - properly, double-take, skinny. They age horribly - as and when they graduate to Yummy Mummy they’re wizened and heavily lined by 40. It’s startling, and not in a good way.

friendlycat · 27/05/2022 23:54

I think Roses has it spot on.

The country look is a fine look in the country, but it looks ludicrous in Wimbledon. Though true country folk don’t actually dress up.

Actually though I don’t really think there is a current day equivalent of the Sloane Ranger of old. Times and fashions have moved on. It was quite a dated look even then with the pie crust frill and gilets etc. In some respects I think it’s perhaps more defined for men with yellow or sage corduroy trousers and tweed jackets, with quality brogues. But you then need a bashed up land rover to pull it all together.

Reinventingat40 · 30/05/2022 10:09

I think it's more the jewellery, hair, homes & lifestyle now that defines the SR as opposed the clothes...
