Sloane Rangers! Do they exist now or have they morphed into something else? Struggling to think of a modern day one!

Is there a modern day sloane? Cressida Bonas Prince Harry's ex perhaps? Sienna Miller?
Is there a look or style that identify them now? The 80s sloane was very distinctive or is it more lifestyle based?

I am a member of a “country brands” group on FB and that might be the style equivalent today. Typical outfits are tight white jeans; Fairfax &Favour, Dubarry or Penelope Chilvers boots; a fedora (usually Hicks & Brown); shirts with pheasant, fox, gundog etc prints; Schoffel gilets; tweed capes with fur trim; tweed field coats (esp Joules) and Fairfax bags. Holland Cooper is quite popular for the flashier outfits.
I’m not sure whether these people are landed gentry or just like dressing this way, but photos often seem to be taken against Cotswold stone houses, out for lunch at country house hotels, holding horses or spaniels, in old Land Rovers (you get the idea)!

midsomermurderess · 27/05/2022 12:41

The Made in Chelsea crowd, I'd say

DisgruntledPelican · 27/05/2022 12:43

I’d call them Rahs; shiny teeth, vacant eyes, dressing like @CeliaCanth describes, occasionally with a flash of real wealth through understated but incredibly expensive watches or jewellery.

Reinventingat40 · 27/05/2022 12:45

I love the look, very expensive to pull off & I imagine they'd spot a fake a mile off!

I don't think the sloane exists in such an overt way these days, so the associated style isn't as immediately obvious. I agree with the country brands being the most closely like the old Sloane Ranger but I don't think there is an urban equivalent these days, except perhaps for men - maroon jeans and a rugby top from Hackett.

Reinventingat40 · 27/05/2022 12:51

@BreakfastOfWaffles that's why I was struggling to think of one.. I think they're a bit more hipster these days like Cressida Bonas even Pippa Middleton has a slightly old Sloaney style as in the tailored shorts, rich girl hair (as I call it!) & the sporty country lifestyle

CeliaCanth you have just described a lot of the population of Cheltenham! Usually accessorised with a labrador. Not sure it's quite the same demographic as the sloane ranger but definitely similarities.

BlessedByTheShitFairy · 27/05/2022 15:00

Whilst I don't have much interest in the sartorial exploits of this particular tribe, I envy the already thought out 'uniform' element. Imagine never having to overthink which jeans, jacket, hat!
It's the type of conformity that must save one hell of a lot of time for other pursuits (pissing around shooting pheasants and posing at country fairs), and whilst generally expensive, you just need a couple of pairs of everything in different colours and you're done.

They're always tall and have strapping thighs too, which is something else that I personally admire. If I wore white skinnies and a slim fit Schoffel gilet I'd look like incredibly pretentious - I'm a thin, soft, pale type (more laura ashley than f&f) and I don't think this, or the SR look suits the thin/skinny silhouette. I grew up around horses/equestrian types and was always the odd one out with a mass of white curls and tiny little arms and legs. It's something that requires really great muscle tone to pull off i think.

These days I still like my outdoor pursuits (no, I don't shoot!) but stick to Fjallraven and Sweaty Betty Grin

Llamasally · 27/05/2022 15:08

I always thought Sloane Ranger was a very London-specific look but the term is a bit before my time. If the modern equivalent is what @CeliaCanth describes then what I thought was a SR is wrong! I’d say that was country set style…

Reinventingat40 · 27/05/2022 15:13

@Llamasally i think it started in London but alot of the London set weekend in the country & I guess sort of adopt the country look (like Madonna when she was married to Guy Ritchie!) while they are there & bring an element of it back to the city..? Very hard look to pull off but the thick long hair, perfect barely made up skin & air of outdoorsy is a must!

I was out in South Kensington this morning; it’s not really changed a vast amount from those days in terms of the “type.”

Nitgel · 27/05/2022 15:19

modern editions include lots of facial surgery and small yappy dogs

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 27/05/2022 15:22

Clare Balding

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 27/05/2022 15:24

Although I suppose she’s a Sloane sub-group.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 27/05/2022 15:25

'happy to get muddy and covered in dog hair' subset, which the MIC brigade would not fit into.

Floisme · 27/05/2022 15:26

I don't recall the country dressing side of it at all, unless tweed hacking jackets count as country wear. The main things I remember are the piecrust collars, the string of pearls over a round neck sweater, and the taffeta ballgowns. Basically the kind of stuff Lady Diana Spencer wore before the Royals got their hands on her.

I'm sure the young Sloanies are still around but it's not my world and they don't get photographed as much these days so I don't know what they're wearing now.

FloweryCurtainTwitcher · 27/05/2022 15:36

Male- red trousers with pleated fronts
Female- jeans with flat shoes, stripey top and gilet.,

stuntbubbles · 27/05/2022 15:39

Just pick up a copy of Tatler to find some modern-day Sloanes.

AnnaMagnani · 27/05/2022 15:53

Wander around Notting Hill or Kensington Church Street to look at rich trustafarians spending their trust funds or discussing their jewellery designs.

Big sleeves, big dresses, yes the hair, long lunches at v nice cafes, compulsory small dog.

CowboyFromHell · 27/05/2022 16:05

There’s no shortage of them at all. I went to a university that was full of ‘yahs’ as we always called them. Usually girls who were tall blonde, sporty. And with that special brand of confidence often found in people whose parents have spent ££££ on your education.

And the cycle continues. The girls I went to university with are now late thirties and have nearly all married bright red trouser types and have produced the next generation of tall, blonde, sporty girls.

AnnaMagnani · 27/05/2022 18:01

Actually I meant to say Westbourne Grove. Where you can see how to spend your money if you have far far too much.

Mercurial123 · 27/05/2022 18:06

This is an interesting read.

Didn't see any last time I was in the Chelsea area (going to the Royal Court). Maybe they hide in their SUVs because they cannot cope with the north face of the King's Road!

Used to live around Bayswater and my parents still do. That type definitely still exists. Kensington gardens on a Sunday morning - men nice chinos with a nice shirt plus jumper around shoulders, nice loafers, sun glasses, barbour jacket. Women hard to describe but just look expensive and rich. Stylish but also quite boring, nothing too original - jeans, nice trainers or loafers, barbour. Often you can spot by how nice / new their shoes are. Definitely wellies in random weather even in central london

StridTheKiller · 27/05/2022 21:07

Fairfax & Favour and Dubarry are faux country chav wellies.
