I’m going to a wedding in August and am wondering if I can wear this dress. I already have it and I wear it to go out in the summer (into town, to pubs etc.).

For this reason, it feels like a regular ‘day-to-day’ dress to me, but I’m wondering if it could pass as a wedding outfit if I add heels and a fat sister?

The wedding is a ceremony and reception in a country house, so pretty formal. I don’t want to feel out of place, but equally I know I feel nice and will be comfortable if I wear this dress. The bride won’t have seen me in it before so she won’t know I haven’t bought it especially.

Thoughts?

It is lovely, but where I'm from a shirt dress would not be formal enough for a wedding.
Wedding attire is "day at Ascot" dressy here (Ireland). I get the impression that UK weddings are often more casual though?

*Heels & a fat sister

Brilliant 😂😂😂😂

gunnersgold · 27/05/2022 19:17

Serious giggles at fat sister 🤣🤣🤣

LubaLuca · 27/05/2022 19:21

I agree that a shirt dress is not dressy enough for a formal event. As you said, this is the sort of thing you'd wear to sit in a beer garden, and things like a fascinator aren't going to change the style of the dress. I really like it, but I would always go more formal for a wedding.

It would be like a man wearing chinos and a shirt instead of a suit and hoping a tie would make it look more formal.

AssignedSlytherinAtBirth · 27/05/2022 19:22

It'll be fine. Does your sister know how you describe her? Grin

JemimaTiggywinkle · 27/05/2022 19:27

Will look lovely with heels and a clutch. Maybe a chunky sloaney headband rather than a fascinator?

Knockoneofftheshelftowin · 27/05/2022 19:41

I went to a wedding recently where a guest had something similar in the same colour. Wore an orange and green fascinator and orange shoes.
Looked great.

Strawberriesaregreat · 27/05/2022 19:43

Agree that it looks like a day dress.

SoaringSkiesAzure · 27/05/2022 19:49

I wore a not formal enough ( inexpensive ) dress for a wedding recently, while people were In their £1000 glorious outfits. Oops

ofwarren · 27/05/2022 19:50

Lovely dress
I can't stop laughing at the fat sister 🤣

EggRollsForever · 27/05/2022 19:57

How will you feel though ? Comfortable? Are you on a budget just now? Will you be wishing you bought something new?I think it's too informal for the type of wedding you have described, sorry.

Lulu1919 · 27/05/2022 19:59

Lovely
Formal wedding I'd wear heel or wedges
Maybe a pashmina/ wrap
Something in my hair ...maybe same colour as wrap
Nice handbag

Copernico · 27/05/2022 20:04

It’s a lovely day dress but too casual for a formal country house wedding.

User354354 · 28/05/2022 07:25

The dress is lovely.

Fat sister is my favourite auto correct for a long time ! 😂

BundtCake · 28/05/2022 07:26

For me it’s too informal. I would wear it to work in the summer.

Penguinsaregreat · 28/05/2022 07:29

The dress is fine.
Fat sister may be my favourite auto correct ever.

featheryfancy · 28/05/2022 07:30

Sorry, I'm another saying too informal. The pattern makes it very much a day time summer dress for me.
If you'll be comfortable, that's the most important thing but I'd feel self conscious that I was under dressed in it.

FAQs · 28/05/2022 07:55

That’s a cracking auto correct 🤣

Sodthatforagameofsoldiers · 28/05/2022 08:00

Aw that's nice. What's the sizing like? I'm between a 10 and 12...

It depends on the wedding - could be dressed up. I'd be inclined to put it with a sparkly belt, sparkly shoes and a hat or sparkly hair accessory. If it was a very posh wedding then I would possibly choose something else.

EmilyBolton · 28/05/2022 08:01

LazyJayne · 26/05/2022 11:37

Fat sister = fascinator 😳

🤣🤣🤣🤣
I genuinely had started to figure out who would be so blatant to admit they choose less good looking people to stand with to make them look better 🤦‍♀️

Sunnierdays · 28/05/2022 08:03

Nice dress but very casual !

I don't think that's a valid comparison. Men's formal wear is all or nothing- women have more freedom.

I would wear that dress as an ordinary every day dress but equally I was watching guests come out of a church last week and there were dresses like that.

I agree with Lulu.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 28/05/2022 08:09

I think it would look great with some heels a bag and a chunky headband.

zurala · 28/05/2022 08:16

I think it looks too casual, because it's a shirt dress which is inherently casual, and because of the print. I don't think it's wedding material, sorry.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 28/05/2022 08:29

It’s nice but looks like a work dress to me and wouldn’t go with a fascinator etc.
