Teeth whitening £450/500 at dentist - alternatives?

She makes a mould and then gives you 2-3 tubes of some paste? Doesn’t seem a service in need of such expensive and long training and such a high fee - any other ways of doing this?

Watching with interest as i was gobsmacked at the cost! Currently using the Oral-B 3D White Luxe Whitening Toothpaste which is the only toothpaste i've ever seen with visible results but still want a better solution.

Lizziekisss · 19/05/2022 21:55

The main cost is for the custom mould they make for your upper and lower teeth. Once you have it, it can last for years ,and you can just buy a tube of the whitening bleach which is about £25. I do this once a year.

thistimelastweek · 19/05/2022 21:58

I'm pretty sure the Internet will provide other ways but I would want to he 100% confident about any chemical I put in my mouth.

legalseagull · 19/05/2022 21:58

I had exactly this treatment six months ago and it cost £200. Call some other dentists!

Interesting mine is saying it’s £50/tube (£450 is for mould and 2 tubes - £500 for the 3rd which she says I might need as my teeth are quite yellow)

Tried a few and the only one that actually whitened was the dentist one. You get what you pay for

Beachbabe1 · 19/05/2022 22:29

Watching with interest..does it work??

Crackercrazy · 19/05/2022 22:30

I paid about £400 last year. Be warned that it can hurt! Really hurt (I had to take painkillers a few times as the pain kept me awake at night). It can make your teeth really sensitive - but you might be ok!

userxx · 19/05/2022 22:32

Crest white strips are good.

BananaShrimp · 19/05/2022 22:33

Honestly don’t mess with your teeth! It’s incredibly painful and can cause permanent damage. I had mine whitened by the dentist 9 months ago and I still have pain and discolouration which might never go away.

Tithebarnacle · 19/05/2022 22:40

There's a significant lab fee to pay.
The dental technician has to make upper and lower bleaching trays front the impressions your dentist takes. They're pretty expensive on their own.

florianfortescue · 19/05/2022 23:06

Crest Whitestrips. I've done these and I've done professional whitening and there was very little difference between them.

Birkenshock · 19/05/2022 23:58

I don't have a "before" pic, but I started gargling with 3% hydrogen peroxide (the same sort of thing you use for cuts & grazes) once or twice a week about 6 months ago. Just gargle for 30 seconds. And occasionally rub some over my teeth with a q-tip and go to bed. My teeth have gone nicely white (pic attached), the bottle was £4 and lasts about 3 months.

Ring around. You want it done at the dentist, no alternatives are as safe and effective. We charge £240.

cookiemonster2468 · 20/05/2022 06:41

Do you know the reason for your teeth discolouration?

If it's just because of something like drinking coffee/ red wine, you can easily deal with this without dentist intervention. Just buy some whitening toothpaste.

I use a charcoal toothpaste and it works great because there's no underlying problem discolouring my teeth, it's just because of what I eat/ drink which stains a bit sometimes.

Of course, that will just bring your teeth back to their natural whiteness (i.e. remove the stains), it won't make them super white like some of the whitening treatments, so it depends what you want.

Do be careful with this!

If you do this over a prolonged period it can erode your tooth enamel and increase sensitivity.

catfunk · 20/05/2022 07:00

That's expensive I paid £250 for 3 tubes.
My teeth were pretty white anyway so it didn't do that much tbh 😬

This is my experience too.

heyhi · 20/05/2022 08:55

Also interested in this thread as I'd love to have whiter teeth but don't have £500!

A couple of weeks ago, there were DIY kits in Costco - harley street smile something :/ I can’t actually find the box otherwise I’d upload a photo. Its a ten day kit, you get a pre whitening solution that you paint your teeth with, then gel up the mould with another paste, attach the little blue light n shove it in your gob!
pros: has an actual noticeable affect after just one use. Way less expensive than at a dentist. Only takes 20 minutes a day.
cons: the mould is NOT moulded to your teeth, it’s generic. Great if you have lovely straight teeth, but I’m a little crooked, and (I) can see where my yellower canines are not being targeted (but then it really does show how much of a difference it can make) I think it made my teeth more sensitive doing it every day, i did five days on the trot, then planned to do it once a week for the remaining gel.. but I’ve misplaced the pack😬. Welcome to my life!

Martinisarebetterdirty · 20/05/2022 09:42

I got the boutique whitening from my dentist (350 - west London and 4 tubes of the gel) - it’s ok but not the Hollywood smile I’d like. My colleague got the same and hers are blingy white so it obviously depends on your own teeth a bit too.

This is really helpful thanks - because I do want it done safely. If the only consultation is a one off mould fitting then it would be worth travelling for to save £££’s.

Are dentists the only people allowed to sell the tubes of treatment and make the moulds?

I also use hydrogen peroxide, but water down the mix and use it as a mouth wash.

Any whitening treatment will damage your enamel.

You can pay beauticians to give you similar treatments, but then if you look at their work in other areas - appalling lips, frozen botox faces etc - I wouldn't go near most of them for an eyebrow wax let alone life changing and potentially damaging treatment.

puppetcat · 20/05/2022 11:04

oil pulling with coconut oil is great for teeth whitening! Just swish a spoonful between your teeth / aroumd your mouth once a day for a few mins.
