Evening dress for wedding (bride)

lurcherlove · 18/05/2022 07:53

I'm getting married in mid summer, and I have a lovely wedding dress for the day. I was planning to wear the one dress for the whole event but I had a fitting yesterday and got sweaty within minutes. I absolutely can't stand being sweaty, I'm ashamed to say that it makes me really distressed to the point I feel overwhelmed, so I am thinking I would like to have a back up dress for the evening in case I am struggling. But I have no idea of where to start even looking, and need some inspiration!

Clothes will need to cater for a chest measurement of 44" (I usually wear 34GG) - I generally wear between 12-16 size clothes, and I lean towards loose fitting items for comfort and because I have a tendency to get bloated. I'm told I'm a "rectangle" shape! I'd prefer a dress instead of trousers/skirt and top. I don't mind my legs on show and look good in skirts that are either floor length or sit just above the knee.

I'm looking for something a bit more grown up (I am 40 next year but I look much younger and have been working on switching up my look), and potentially recommendations that I can buy from more generally going forward. Looking forward to browsing your suggestions!!

i was a bit of a sweater when I got married in the summertime, basically covered myself top to toe in anti perspirant for the day and it did work-and that was with a ceilidh at night. Would this be an option?
(another dress absolutely wouldn’t have been an option for me as my mum made my dress and I didn’t want to take it off!)

heldinadream · 18/05/2022 08:08

How tall are you and what colour are you thinking? Be nice to slip into something loose and NOT polyester in order to feel lovely, I think. How about this Monsoon dress? Goes big enough.

Do you have a budget?

I’d definitely suggest either linen or silk jersey - possibly even crochet which is hugely fashionable at the moment.

This should be comfortable and non-heating.

LookItsMeAgain · 18/05/2022 08:32

What's your budget here for the second dress?

TottersBlankly · 18/05/2022 08:34

This would be perfection, surely? The fabric isn’t thin and the cut-outs would keep you cool. Also looks glorious.

TottersBlankly · 18/05/2022 08:39

Even more perfect. Linen! Tiny! Easy to wear. Cheaper. A lovely carefree evening frock. (If it would fit?)

LookItsMeAgain · 18/05/2022 08:40

Would any of these suit:

Dress 1

Dress 2

Dress 3

Dress 4

Dress 5

Dress 6

Dress 7

The dress that you do have - what is making it so sweaty to wear? Could you pick a different wedding dress that you can wear for the whole day instead?

I had the same issue and I went for something from Maya for the evening:

So many options already! Thank you so much - I will click through!

To answer some questions:
I am 5ft 5, or there abouts. I'm not wearing heels because I really can't walk in them (I'm actually wearing birkenstocks haha).

Budget wise, let's say around £300 mark top end.

Colour: Doesn't have to be white, although I am open to it. We are going for a purple colourscheme, but I don't feel I need to match. I usually wear bright colours day-to-day.

I will need to wear a bra with straps!

I really love my wedding dress, and it may not even be an issue on the day, but I know if I have a backup plan it will give me that bit of reassurance.

Could you use driclor into the run up of the wedding day?

inappropriateraspberry · 18/05/2022 09:57

How about Coast? They do lots of lighter wedding dresses. The second one here is only £53!

Have you thought about Botox for sweating? Can be used on underarms, hands and feet.

It's pricey but excellent.

Might make you feel more confident and comfortable.

bouncydog · 18/05/2022 10:58

Depending on the style of your dress could the seamstress adjust it so that you could still wear the dress in the evening but on a "lighter basis"? EG if it has a big full heavy train, could she make the train detatchable? If full of heavy underskirt could that be made detatchable and the train pulled up for the evening? It would be such a shame to only wear it for a few hours in the afternoon particularly if you really love it. Have a fabulous day whatever you decide to go with.

Isonthecase · 18/05/2022 11:28

I think I'd probably be looking more at the alterations to the main dress, it may be something as simple as a polyester slip in it which you could switch for a natural material and sweat less.

In the evening I think you should be taking the chance to go for the most outrageous gold glittery dress of your dreams because when else will you wear it? Something like this but cheaper (vinted?):

Nancy mac also do various glorious jumpsuits for about £250 and they'd hem it for you.

This is lovely and I think the sort of thing I had in mind. Certainly on the short list! It looks like something I'd wear again if I didn't end up changing.

Yours is very daring! Bet you look fab!

Love the sequin idea, hadn't thought of that.

Oooh good idea. Hadn't though "vintage" style even though I have several dresses I wear day-to-day.
