If you grew out your grey over lockdown, what is your hair like now?

I did. It's been well over a year since I grew it out, and I fucking hate it. I spoke to my hairdresser about it when I went in for a cut a couple of weeks ago and she was saying how gorgeous it was and how on trend - but when I asked her about her other clients she said most of them have started dyeing it again.

I'm so tempted to reach back to the bottle but - despite how much I hate it - I'm not sure I can be arsed to go back down that road again!

My hair grew out a stunning shade of grey and along with the use of some purple shampoo every day, it really is stunning.

Bunty55 · 12/05/2022 00:02

Mine did too. It's silver/white. Don't use the purple shampoo every day. Use it once a week for best effect

LifeInsideMyhead · 12/05/2022 00:05

I love mine! I saw a person I didnt recognise on the school run who looked amazing, then realised it was a friend I'd not seen since covid - she did look older... but amazing!

ChaToilLeam · 12/05/2022 00:08

I now have shoulder length silver hair, it’s shiny and thick. Probably makes me look older but I don’t care, it’s swishy and I love it.

ShandaLear · 12/05/2022 04:45

Mines about 30% grey against darkish brown hair. It looks like grey streaks and is quite dramatic. I’m really quite impressed with it. Sometimes I use red or blonde temporary hair colours for a bit of a change, but mostly I leave it alone.

chatw0o0 · 12/05/2022 04:55

Mine is still growing out! I coloured it for a LONG time and the length doesn't get cut much (long bob shape) so it's taking a while. On top mostly looks blonde but if I pull it back, all the front/underneath is grey/brown. Doesn't look amazing but not the end of the world either. Happy to persevere with it and see how it turns out.

BOOTS52 · 12/05/2022 04:55

I need my roots redone again as grows so quick but just did that root spray thing today but will colour roots next week. Am 52 and not ready to grow it out as think it would age me too much but I do think women look lovely with a nice grey once it has a bit of colour added to it to brighten it up but for me am so used to my black hair cannot imagine a full head of grey and would take ages to get it all the same grey colour. If you are not happy with it change the colour or get a nice silver etc added to it.

itsthesoundofthepolice · 12/05/2022 04:57

I grew mine out had a huge cut to get rid of the residual dye......it's dyed again albeit it's lighter than it was.

Im 39 it was probably 40% grey and my hair is Extremely dark brown. The contrast was just too much for me and I felt it aged me. My hairdresser was dead against it and refused to dye it when I first mentioned it . I threatened to go back to box dying it and she relented. It's now a mid/dark brown with cool under tones which seems to blend the grey in well and help hide the roots

TulipsGarden · 12/05/2022 05:10

I'm dying it again. It just didn't suit me, the colour washed me out and the grey was patchy so I have some areas that are almost completely grey, but others that are still very dark brown (I'm 40).

I love the look of grey hair so was really disappointed! I'm hoping in a few years the dark patches will have gone more grey and it'll look better, and perhaps my skin tone will suit it better as I get older.

ArtVandalay · 12/05/2022 07:22

My friend has embraced the grey. She’s got gorgeous hair, thick and straight.

I don’t like it grey though. It’s washed her out and aged her massively.

anotherneutralname · 12/05/2022 07:33

Mine just has streaks at the moment and I quite like it. I used to dye it blonde (for decades). After leaving it through lockdowns, I got my hairdresser to dye all of it the same colour as the root regrowth. With relatively regular cuts since then, it’s now all natural colour and a billion times shinier and better condition. It’s darker with grey streaks round the face, which I like.

Takealoadoff · 12/05/2022 07:38

My sister has somehow managed to go a brilliant almost white platinum grey and looks amazing. Any friends who did it have gone back to dyeing which I think is good because they all look quite aged. I never started as I knew it wouldn't suit me.

nbee84 · 12/05/2022 07:43

I did. I'm 52 and couldn't remember my natural colour and wasn't sure how much grey I had. Turns out not much grey and my hair is a non descript boring mousey brown which is why I'd had colour for so many years. I felt drab do decided to have highlights.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 12/05/2022 07:56

I love mine, people asked if it’s streaked silver.

Thectemples are Snow White and the front bits have thick chunky streaks of silver. I’ve got it in a centre parted bob which really shows them up. I get loads of compliments and 2 people have grown there’s out after seeing mine.

Woyld NEVER go back. Even other customers in the hairdressers comment on it. All that dying took forever and l’d forgotten what the actual real colour was like.

nearlyspringyay · 12/05/2022 08:01

I have two thick streaks of silver in my dark brown below shoulder length hair. I love it.

I won't go back to the bore and expensive of dying it, and it's in much better condition now.

DeskInUse · 12/05/2022 08:05

I've got long hair and it's now I the best condition it's been in years, I love the colour too

Oblomov22 · 12/05/2022 08:15

Why didn't hairdresser offer alternatives? She could have suggested silver or whiter highlights to lift?

Oblomov22 · 12/05/2022 08:17

Few people are blessed with really nice grey hair. Some are naturally a lovely colour, some have stunning natural white highlights. Others it's just drab and ageing.

Vicliz24 · 12/05/2022 08:18

I didn't grow mine out over lockdown I did it 8 years ago and I can honestly say I've never looked back . I kept it short for a few years but then grew it longer . Over lockdown it got longer still and I absolutely love it . I'm white at the front and streaky from my ears to the back .

Solosunrise · 12/05/2022 08:20

I did, then got high/low lights and loved it for a while, but the faff and cost is very boring. So I had to grow it out all over again. Luckily it's short and only took six months.
I think the only reason people think it is ageing, is that we've become so used to people having colour put in their hair for so long. I love to see attractively styled or cut hair on a youngish face. I think it shows confidence, personally

Oblomov22 · 12/05/2022 08:42

I disagree about ageing only because we've become used to colour. On some they look fab. On others it isn't as flattering as their natural hair colour, and it is genuinely just ageing.

PuppyMonkey · 12/05/2022 08:47

Okay I’m brave enough to post a pic, cos I’ve done this.

Some days I love it, some days I think I should go back to dark brown. But the thought of going back to the days of worrying about my grey temples coming through every week or so and having to touch up, re-dye etc etc snore snore is winning at the moment.

SwissCheeseRentedChildren · 12/05/2022 08:53

PuppyMonkey

You look great!

HollowTalk · 12/05/2022 09:06

@PuppyMonkey Is that completely natural? It looks like it has tons of highlights!

WouldBeGood · 12/05/2022 09:17

I kept on top of my roots religiously throughout lockdown, but have now gone blonde again with a view to growing out the colour. I think my hair is now pretty white all over, so that should be good for getting toners done if I fancy it.

@PuppyMonkey gorgeous colour!
