If you grew out your grey over lockdown, what is your hair like now?

I did. It's been well over a year since I grew it out, and I fucking hate it. I spoke to my hairdresser about it when I went in for a cut a couple of weeks ago and she was saying how gorgeous it was and how on trend - but when I asked her about her other clients she said most of them have started dyeing it again.

I'm so tempted to reach back to the bottle but - despite how much I hate it - I'm not sure I can be arsed to go back down that road again!

PuppyMonkey your hair is gorgeous!

AndSoFinally · 12/05/2022 09:35

@PuppyMonkey is that completely natural? I used to pay a fortune to get mine dyed to look like that! 😂 You're very lucky, it looks fab.

BestIsWest · 12/05/2022 09:49

I did - I was developing an intolerance to the dye so it came as a bit of a relief. I veer between loving it and wanting to dye it. DH and family and friends all tell me it looks good.

I have pure white at the temples and streaks in the rest. It’s very short too.

I have to keep on top of getting it cut and I have found that I need to avoid wearing anything cream or any warmish colours.

When people say it makes someone look 'aged' what age ? A 50 year old looking 60 or 70 ? Or just their real age ? A head of flat box brown coloured hair or the ubiquitous caramel highlights don't suddenly make someone look youthful, the saggy jowls and wrinkles are still there, no one instantly thinks you are 10 years younger, you're deluded if you think it does. And I'm in my 50s myself, my hair is now fully grey, I don't look older, just different and my hair is in much better condition.

Me! I'm curly. Not loving the grey but dye wrecks my hair and is expensive/a faff

Yes, this is what I mean too

@PuppyMonkey you look great. Mine is similar colour but shorter

Stressofherregard · 12/05/2022 10:34

I grew my grey hair out over lockdown and used some silver colour to highlight it. Also cut it myself right back from mid length to short. it was ok. but when I went back to cool brown I got so many compliments. saved at least £1K in cutting and colouring at home. ps I am retired so no pressure. Currently have v short punchy style. (a bit crap really but who cares I don't)

ginghamstarfish · 12/05/2022 10:42

Don't be tempted to go back, I'm sure your natural colour suits you, as it does with most people. Nowadays I really notice those unnatural dye jobs, mostly too dark/bright against aging faces, where the natural colour would be more subtle and match the skin tones. Glad to see more embracing the grey, I did a few years back and would never dye it again.

Okay I’m brave enough to post a pic, cos I’ve done this.

Some days I love it, some days I think I should go back to dark brown. But the thought of going back to the days of worrying about my grey temples coming through every week or so and having to touch up, re-dye etc etc snore snore is winning at the moment.

Gorgeous hair!
You look great. The fact you don’t have to redye or touch up roots is a bonus.

I’ve done the same. Grown out the colour, cut it myself and maintain with plantur brown. Saved so much money!

Ooh, such nice comments thank you. Blush

Yes this is all natural, I’ve still got some natural brown coming out, then it’s white underneath and silver everywhere else - like nature’s own highlight/lowlight technique. Grin

I think when people say they wouldn’t like their hair grey, you just never know what type of grey is going to come out till you try?!

PiggyPlumPie · 12/05/2022 12:31

When I first went to the hairdressers after lockdown, my hairdresser immediately told me that I did not need to dye my hair anymore. Her colleagues agreed, as did I.

I do have some dyed really dark underneath to change it up a bit now. At a recent funeral, a distant relative took pictures to show her hairdresser so I guess it looks pretty good.

BOOTS52 · 12/05/2022 13:59

Puppy Monkey your hair is fabulous and love all the tones and textures just gorgeous and I have a fringe like yours. Think it would look fabulous with 2 silver streaks down the sides. How long did it take for your hair to grow out. Really gorgeous photo of you. Thanks for posting.

BOOTS52 · 12/05/2022 14:00

PuppyMonkey you have devilment and mischief in those eyes of yours ha am I right. lovely haircut also.

mrsrhodgilbert · 12/05/2022 16:39

I let mine grow out too and I like it. I’ve had a lot of compliments and it is lovely not to have to keep hi lighting it. I’m still trying to work out which colours look best on me now. It was quite easy over winter because I would naturally wear a lot of black, white, grey. I’m looking at summer clothes and feeling a bit unsure about what will suit. I agree cream isn’t good or pastels. I think I’m going to feel I look older this summer but I’m not going back

PuppyMonkey · 12/05/2022 16:43

@BOOTS52 erm, not sure about devilment - maybe a few too many wines?

@mrsrhodgilbert you definitely do need to think about clothes colours more. Navy and deep blues and teale seem to work really well with my grey, also bright pinks and fuchsias. And you can’t go wrong with white either.

DontPickTheFlowers · 12/05/2022 16:53

I think the secret is a really good haircut

AnotherTroyforHertoBurn · 12/05/2022 17:08

@DontPickTheFlowers Agree re haircut. This time two years ago I was bald, my hairdresser was invaluable as it grew back.

shewhomustbeEbayed · 12/05/2022 19:56

Mine grew out during lockdown and looks like it’s dyed blonde, it’s just lost its pigment.
I’ve grown it longer and am really enjoying saving on hairdressing fees.
