What do yo wear for walking/hiking when over 50?

I know it's a somewhat silly question and there are no rules. But I do a fair bit of outdoorsy stuff throughout the year and like to wear good quality, robust stuff that lasts. I tend to use Fjallraven for leggings/trousers and have done for years - they're comfy and really a good fit for me. These are my favourite trekking tights.

I was thinking about the future though. I don't see a lot of older women wearing the tights out hiking and wondered why? They certainly aren't shown much in the advertising of brand products either :(
I maybe I don't notice people enough! If you are over 50 (I am approaching it) what would you wear on bottom half for hiking?
I would be loathe to give up my Abisko's and perhaps would prefer to use a longer jacket or top?

It is a bit of a daft question and I would personally advise someone to 'wear what you like!', but I am interested in what other women do regardless.

Wear what you feel comfortable in. Nobody round here notices. I wear sports leggings in the summer and joggers in the winter.
why do you feel the need to wear a longer top?

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 11/05/2022 11:15

I wear light weight walking trousers

EmmaH2022 · 11/05/2022 11:17

I'm wondering what makes those tights worth that price!

i'd wear a longer top because I hate having my arse on show, but that's me.

RampantIvy · 11/05/2022 11:18

I'm 63 and have a pair of water repellant walking trousers. If it is dry I just wear whatever I have got on - usually jeans.

SignOnTheWindow · 11/05/2022 11:19

I see loads of women in their 50s and 60s hiking in leggings similar to that. I'm in my mid forties and absolutely intend to keep wearing what I'm wearing now to walk - leggings, light boots and a top. Why change what's comfortable and practical?

I'm not looking forward to replacing them! It is a silly price, I agree, but they are my favourites and I have had them for 5 years. No other legging compares for durability, holding it all in, and being comfy!
When I wear trousers they are always flapping about, so do prefer more streamlined legs Grin

Btw, I DID mention that I can wear what I like, but I am interested in others too.
I would perhaps wear longer tops eventually if I preferred more modestly in the bum region or if I gained weight, I dunno!

53 here and always wear leggings with a longish top.

WildCoasts · 11/05/2022 11:23

Northface leggings. They are comfortable, quick drying, moisture wicking. I see plenty of middle aged women wearing this sort of thing. If you're going to rock scramble or climb up hills, so much more comfortable.

SpringSparrow · 11/05/2022 11:24

Why would you not continue to wear what you are wearing now? What are you envisaging happening when you turn 50?!

I have the super sculpt, they are excellent! To be honest they do look better than the Fjallraven ones. Cheaper too 😅

Not as hard wearing though.

Mid 60s. Lightweight walking trousers that zip off at the knees and either a loose T-shirt or a lightweight fleece, waterproof jacket.

I never said I would change.

I wear exactly the same as when I was younger - fitted trousers, currently the Montane ineo pro.

orbitalcrisis · 11/05/2022 11:34

I often see people hiking in leggings, are they thick enough for brambles and stinging nettles? I always wear jeans, ones I can roll up in the summer if it gets hot. Don't see that changing when I turn 50.

CountryCousin · 11/05/2022 11:35

OP, are the Abisko tights viable in very hot weather, or do you swap to something else at the height of summer / on holiday?

(Sorry, no helpful advice to offer!)

orbitalcrisis · 11/05/2022 11:37

I wore jeans in my 20s and 30s too. I never saw the need for specialist hiking clothing other than boots and I've found the cheapest ones tend to work best for me!

HellonHeels · 11/05/2022 11:38

Craghoppers kiwi pro trousers. I like the stretch fabric and they last well. Very comfortable. And they come in the fat sizes that I need.

Vicliz24 · 11/05/2022 11:41

In summer usually sport leggings but in winter I tend to wear walking trousers because I can fit thermal leggings underneath them .

In hot weather I've worn shorts, but I would say the Abisko are winter/rain leggings. Depends on temps, i suppose.

I don't know where all you jeans wearers hike (or are you on short walks?) but I never wear jeans on hikes. If they get wet, you are at risk of hypothermia, especially if something happens and you get stuck out on a cold night. That's why I wear special hiking leggings and nothing cotton or that will hold water. It's safer.

milveycrohn · 11/05/2022 11:47

Wear whatever you feel comfortable in. There is no need to change what you wear when you get older.
I wear craghoppers trousers, as they do not cling to you if it rains, and are quick drying. They have lots of pockets.
Other people prefer long shorts, but I prefer protection from stinging nettles.
I have tried a longer jacket, but have reverted back to my trusted old shorter jacket, as the longer one made climbing over styles, etc more difficult.
Then I prefer a long sleeve T shirt, and sweatshirt, and rain cover for when it really rains

WakeWaterWalk · 11/05/2022 11:50

I've seen all ages in the tights style tbh in summer.
Only maybe in the Lakes do I see the more trad hiking trousers but maybe it's more ramblers then than mountaineers.

( Disclaimer, I'm usually observing this from a coffee shop in town.😂)

I’m almost 60 and wear Montane’s Ineo Pro leggings-few years old now, tough, articulated, stretchy and proper gusset so no camel toe! Love them. I wear Rab nexus hoodies and Rab walking jacket-they have the perfect cut and fit for my shape. I also like the fact the back is slightly longer so covers my bum. Any walking tee shirt, no cotton as too clammy.
