What do yo wear for walking/hiking when over 50?

I know it's a somewhat silly question and there are no rules. But I do a fair bit of outdoorsy stuff throughout the year and like to wear good quality, robust stuff that lasts. I tend to use Fjallraven for leggings/trousers and have done for years - they're comfy and really a good fit for me. These are my favourite trekking tights.

I was thinking about the future though. I don't see a lot of older women wearing the tights out hiking and wondered why? They certainly aren't shown much in the advertising of brand products either :(
I maybe I don't notice people enough! If you are over 50 (I am approaching it) what would you wear on bottom half for hiking?
I would be loathe to give up my Abisko's and perhaps would prefer to use a longer jacket or top?

It is a bit of a daft question and I would personally advise someone to 'wear what you like!', but I am interested in what other women do regardless.

I'm 66 I wear Acai thermal leggings in Spring, Autumn and Winter and three quarter Reebok running leggings in winter. I also have a pair of Acai waterproof leggings

VintageGibbon · 12/05/2022 09:42

Wear what you like. I wear joggers or lycra leggings and carry waterproof trousers. I prefer a lot more stretch in the fabric than trad walking trousers offer.

Astrabees · 12/05/2022 09:46

Oh dear, I'm 65 and was thinking of getting leggings for my post retirement active life, sounds like I should be getting something else to cover my offensive old bottom. Honestly, it doesn't matter. I've not noticed any threads about giving up wearing a swimsuit in favour of some victorian style monstrosity at any particular age.

Spottyegg · 12/05/2022 22:04

I wear Rab walking trousers - I have a pair of Acai thermal trousers as well for colder weather, which means I don’t need thermals under the trousers. Key things are comfort, breathability, warmth when wet, and stretch! For summer, shorts, same brand (Rab and Montane) I would have thought cheap leggings would be cold in the rain? At least, that’s the rationale for technical fabrics.

Mouseylu · 12/05/2022 22:32

I have found açai to be great products. Winter weight fleece lined and lighter skinny stretch.

Lookingoutside · 13/05/2022 10:46

Mid 40s but I wear Fabletics powerhold leggings and long line vests or racer back tops. Then either a fleece hoody and/or waterproof.

I can’t see that changing when I hit my 50s.

notagamer · 13/05/2022 10:48

Er

wear whatever you want to
Rather than some arbitrary age that you think should go hand in hand with different attire

Talith · 13/05/2022 10:49

Its personal isn't it? Lightweight but durable craghopper trousers for me at fast approaching 50. I do a lot of bum sliding on scrambles and don't think leggings would hold up as well for me and I think I'd feel self conscious in them.

I only realised recently that it wasn't obligatory to wear figure hugging leisure wear if you were a woman and now happily work out in men's trackie bottoms and t shirts. Bliss! So comfy. I usually buy men's outdoor coats too as they're a more generous fit, come down further over your bum and with more pockets.

If you're a leggings lover there's no need to change now. I've seen plenty of wiry really elderly folk sprinting up fells in them!

mudgetastic · 13/05/2022 10:55

Cool - vents

Good pockets

Been wearing same style stuff for ? 30 ? Years

Ok, let's lay this to rest.
I don't see many women in the media or online who are my age who love to hike.

I am interested in hearing how other women my age like to dress and what stuff they like/recommend for hiking.

On the S&B forum, how in god's name is this unusual? My age is relevant, to me, as my tastes change as the years go by, and what I might have worn 10 yrs ago often doesn't interest me. I never said anyone had to :

Cover their arse.
Alter the way they dressed.

Nor did I suggest I should have to either.
I have always, since high school, been a bit shy about revealing my derrière, and if I gained weight later in life I may like to wear something that skims over it. It isn't body shaming, ageist or a fucking crime.
Good heavens.

Thanks to everyone who has shared their hiking favourites. I really need some new trekking shoes, am considering Merrel (sp?).

When you say hiking what exactly do you mean - climbing Scafell Pike or a rural ramble?

We live in a rural area and walk a lot, but because of my osteo arthritis the furthest I can walk these days in one walk is 5 miles. We walk off road and some of the terrain is pretty rough, and most of it is very hilly. Is that a hike or a gentle ramble?

Regardless, I have some walking trousers that I bought from Go Outdoors, but when the weather is dry, like today I shall just keep my jeans on instead of changing into my walking trousers, which I wear when it is muddy.

I won't walk in driving rain. It isn't pleasant and I wear glasses and find it a pain that I have to keep wiping them.

ReviewingTheSituation · 13/05/2022 11:29

I was away with a group of women aged 40-65 2 weeks ago, walking for 8-12 miles a day in the hills (none of us harcore walkers, just a good excuse for a few days away and plenty of chatter). Age made no difference to outfit choice! Everyone was in fairly standard walking trousers - sensible outdoor material, comfortable fit and good for purpose. Some were 'posh', some were 'cheap', but essentially all the same kind of thing. Those over 50 were wearing the same kinds of trousers they were wearing in their 40s, and those over 60 were wearing the same kinds of trousers as everyone else.

Wear whatever works for you - age has nothing to do with it!

mudgetastic · 13/05/2022 12:28

Yes well you won't find many active outdoor women in womens walking forums. As the women walking groups exclude older women with their focus on identifying as a woman as opposed to being one

Squills · 13/05/2022 12:37

I've got a lightweight pair of pull-on Rab trousers they're really comfortable and protect from stinging nettles, etc. I wear all sorts of things though... leggings, jeans and shorts depending on where I'm going.

I have very small slim feet and have found that Berghaus boots fit me well and are well able to deal with the flinty terrain in my area. I go for layers on top and have a number of technical fabric tops but also wear T-shirts and shirts as well. If it's raining a have a pair of waterproof chaps (a throwback to my horse owning days). I like chaps rather than over trousers and also have a fleece lined pair for really cold days.

I'm 66 by the way.

RosesandMoonshine · 13/05/2022 13:19

By hiking, what do I mean?

Well, for example:

Local walks, flat ground, high ground, dog walking, fell walking, fell climbing, trails, all weathers and terrains, through forests, alongside water, off road, coastal walks, nature rambles, that kind of thing.

Name one? I am intrigued by this walking group who actively exclude older women but encourage nonbiological women? Not come across those. Would Kier Starmer approve? Grin

Hobby related forums are the work of satan. I have my hands full enough with MN!

For walking shoes I have a pair by Marmot which are really comfortable. I've just replaced my Jack Wolfskin walking books with a pair by Scarpa.
Thanks for linking to those tights. I think I might treat myself.
I am 66 and I have some Rohan walking trousers which are very light but not as neat as the tights you linked to. For good weather hiking I wear my Sweaty Betty yoga pants which are very comfy and flexible

I do all of those. I just don't call it hiking.

I'm intrigued by the comments from @mudgetastic. None of the walking groups I know are like that.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/05/2022 13:35

I think your problem is that 'the media' don't feature enough older women. That doesn't mean that you should look at what is on sale and think that because the model is younger than you that it's not for you. If you like it and it performs how you like, then it is for you.

I'm a regular hiker and my current favourites are some Brasher walking leggings, but sadly they seem to have been discontinued. If I'd have realised when I bought them I'd have bought about 4 pairs, because I wear them day to day too. They're perfect for all but the hottest or coldest weather.

I'm also saving this thread for ideas when I want to buy more. I have my eye on some Acai trousers so its good to see positive comments about those.

CloudPine · 13/05/2022 13:38

A gold lamé catsuit.

Subbaxeo · 13/05/2022 13:39

I tried lots of boots but love Asolo as their boots fit me like a glove and very grippy sole on rock. I like the alpine style of them too. It’s all about the fit-where your arch falls, how they feel on your feet. I have broad toes and narrow heel, and lots of boots were just too roomy around the heel. For lighter walking, I have a pair of Scarpa approach shoes, quite heavy but nice firm feel so I feel very stable when in them. Some people prefer a spongier sensation-so go with whatever suits you.

StageRage · 13/05/2022 13:46

I am early 60s.

I wear RAB shorts, or straight walking trousers, same as I always have done. If I liked walking in leggings / tights I would wear those.

I wear gym leggings at fitness classes, as does our 60 yo instructor, leading a class of male and female participants aged mid 20s up.

Seriously: wear what works for you.
