Too much hair, what can I do!?

Botoxbotox · 09/05/2022 21:25

I have about three people's hair on my head.

It's not thick or coarse, but there is just too much of it.

It's wavy in places, straight in others, prone to frizz.

I've had Brazilian blow dries at times but fallen out of love with them.

Layers look choppy and shit due to the top of my hair being dead straight and the underneath being curly. I can't find a hairdresser who can do effective internal layers.

What do I do? Undercut? Something else? I am so fed up of not having the time to style my hair as it takes so long and doesn't hold a curl anyway, and products just make it even more flipping wild.

I have 2 peoples hair on my head so I know where you're coming from, shouldn't complain but it's hard work. What style is it in now ?

HipsterCoffeeShop · 09/05/2022 21:31

I have an undercut. Not an edgy young person one but the hair at the back by my neck is all shaved. You can't see when my hair is down. Makes it a bit easier to deal with. The hair in that area has a weird curly frizzy texture and only looks good if I straighten it.

Botoxbotox · 09/05/2022 21:45

@R0tational here it is.....its actually quite flat here as I've just been for a run and it's being held down a bit with sweat...Nice 😖 see how big it is at the sides, the back is twice that size!
@userxx I've grown it, thinking the weight might help, it doesn't. How do you wear yours?
@HipsterCoffeeShop I like the thought of an undercut. How long is your hair? Do you ever wear it up?

Your hair looks so so similar to mine. Honestly the only thing that has helped me is to grow it long (with one slightly shorter layer and absolutely no feathering at the front so side fringe at chin level and then straight down) and either straighten with GHDs in layers or when it's long enough then plait it before bed to get rid of frizz then have it wavy the next day. I had a keratin straightening treatment once and that was long, expensive and average at best. Just slightly less frizz.

You have my hair! And nope don't have answers. Only advice is never ever rough dry your hair upside down 😱

Greatoutdoors · 09/05/2022 21:53

Mine’s like that but darker. The only thing I can do is straighten it. It doesn’t take too long if I clip the top up and do the underneath first - 10 mins ish?

Ive just had a load cut off and some choppy layers cut in but it’s feeling quite chunky so I’m going to have to grow it out again 😬

TryingNotToReact9to5 · 09/05/2022 21:54

only two things work for me. All one length past the shoulders with an undercut.

Or, grow out the undercut and go short. I have a sort of diamond shaped hair cut now. I like it. It's less effort. My hair is curlier than yours though

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 09/05/2022 21:57

I'm the same OP it's astonishing how much hair I have and I'm small so it can really drown me!

At 45 I finally took my hairdressers advice and got an undercut. 3 years on it remains the best thing I've ever done for my hair! Hardly anyone knows I have it as I rarely wear my hair up. Mine goes up in a point rather than straight across the back of my head. Like this pic (I intend to get lines or a pattern of some sort before I go abroad for holidays!)

I find it makes my hair sit better and is so much quicker to dry & straighten etc. and I'd definitely recommend it.

I have similar hair except mines really thick too.

I had to grow it really long so it doesn't ping out too much. I have some layers at the bottom. I generally leave it to dry and then dry it straight or bouncy.

RewildingAmbridge · 09/05/2022 21:59

What happens if you embrace the curl/wave? Mine looks like yours a few hours after straightening it, but if I wet brush with conditioner, rinse put a microfibre turban towel on then use cantu curl activator then a little bit after boots curl creme and leave it to dry naturally (or use a diffuser but that takes practice) I get lovely curls, even it's longer and heavier they are looser but still naturally curly/wavy

Threetulips · 09/05/2022 21:59

You need to find a curly hair stylist and ask for a curly cut, take out the silicone in your shampoo and conditioner, and use leave in conditioner until your curls come back properly.

undercut does work and it looks like ‘normal’ amount of hair! But you have to like it down at times where an undercut isn’t acceptable.

R0tational · 09/05/2022 22:06

I knew it would be luscious and beautiful. Good luck - no advice as my hair is thinning but enjoy it 😍

It's a bit longer than mine but otherwise similar to mine. I don't see a problem.

Botoxbotox · 09/05/2022 22:10

@RewildingAmbridge I have tried many times to embrace the curl, tried curly girl methods etc. It looks decent enough that day, but even if I sleep in a bonnet / on a satin pillow etc it's just a rats nest the next day. I can't wash it daily as it takes so very long to dry (and my hair does best when only washed every 4 or 5 days anyway).

I'm really sold on an undercut now, the only time I need my hair up is for exercise and I look such a red faced mess then no one will care about looking for the undercut.

I had mine cut short. I look like Crystal Tips now. Hairdresser moaned endlessly about how much hair I had. Don’t cut it short.

3luckystars · 09/05/2022 22:15

An inverted bob or ‘stacked bob’ is (in my opinion) the best style for really thick hair.

Go to a hairdressers supplier shop and get some advice and good products for yourself.

Your hair is lovely, just difficult!!

Greentime101 · 09/05/2022 22:21

Definitely the undercut

if you are keeping it long then undercut in the triangle shape - the point can go quite up high.

i currently have a Bob and have undercut a clear 2 inch line all the way round

it grows back so fast it’s well worth trying

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 09/05/2022 22:24

You need to find a hairdresser who will do a deep cut, which is sort of slicing the weight out underneath so the top lies nicely.

Then invest in some Olaplex.

3luckystars · 09/05/2022 22:27

I love the undercut idea.

here is photos of the ‘stacked bob’ it doesn’t have to be that short, it’s the shape of it

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 09/05/2022 22:27

I had an undercut in summer 2020 after getting completely fed up with my hair during lockdown. I wish I'd done it years ago. Mine's thick and curly/frizzy. It sits much nicer now and doesn't go into that Crystal Tips triangle shape. I can air dry it without it taking hours, even in winter. It looks much neater tied up as well as obviously the undercut bit just stays there rather than it all needing to be scraped up!

It's currently shoulder length but I'm planning on growing it but keeping the undercut indefinitely.

userxx · 10/05/2022 07:45

Gorgeous hair but definitely hard work. I think I'd go with the undercut idea, you'll still be left with more than average hair but it should fall better and cut down on styling time.

My hair is just brushing my shoulders. It's a bit shorter now as we're heading into summer. I tend to grow it a bit longer for winter to maybe shoulder blade length

I have layers cut in otherwise I get the dreaded triangle/mushroom head effect.

Wish I'd had an undercut put in years ago tbh. It's really helps keep washing/drying/styling manageable and it means my head doesn't get quite so sweaty during running. The undercut seems to help stop the sweat being absorbed up the back of my head into the rest of my hair. You can just rinse the shaved bit in the shower & you're good to go.

I tie it up all the time for exercise and I don't much care what it looks like from the back, I don't see it!
