Too much hair, what can I do!?

Botoxbotox · 09/05/2022 21:25

I have about three people's hair on my head.

It's not thick or coarse, but there is just too much of it.

It's wavy in places, straight in others, prone to frizz.

I've had Brazilian blow dries at times but fallen out of love with them.

Layers look choppy and shit due to the top of my hair being dead straight and the underneath being curly. I can't find a hairdresser who can do effective internal layers.

What do I do? Undercut? Something else? I am so fed up of not having the time to style my hair as it takes so long and doesn't hold a curl anyway, and products just make it even more flipping wild.

Me too , had an undercut for a few years but I've grown it out now . I get it thinner out . Mine is thick too!

gunnersgold · 10/05/2022 10:37

Thinned

Botoxbotox · 10/05/2022 15:06

I'm absolutely sold in the undercut! I pinged my hairdresser and she was a bit 🤔but to be fair she's all about hair extensions, balayage and that sort of business.
Do you ladies get yours done as part of your regular hair cut or do you nip into a barber shop or suchlike? My hairdresser is quite adamant she's never done one and never will.
Also, I'm guessing it's a more regular upkeep than other haircuts....I only go about 4 times a year normally?

My husband does mine with clippers! No skill involved so v easy

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 10/05/2022 15:15

My hairdresser happily does mine. I pop in for her to redo it and she fits me in between her appointments. I have had DH do it too when I couldn't get to the hairdressers. I wouldn't like him to cut it in but it's easy to maintain when it's done.

gunnersgold · 10/05/2022 15:16

My hairdresser did mine but some hairdressers don't do mens haircuts as it's different training so maybe isn't skilled in it .
Just go to a barber , be aware when you put it up it's fully on show which is why I grew mine out ..
It definitely makes my hair sit flatter though .. mine is biiiggg!!

JollyWilloughby · 10/05/2022 15:23

My hair is just as thick but personally I love it and I put the time in to straighten it. Takes ages but I don’t care as it’s one of my best features.

Just thin your hair problem solved. Get it thinned at every trim. The hairdresser can do it with the thinning scissors?

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 10/05/2022 16:27

If your hairdresser doesn't seem keen on it and isn't used to doing an undercut, get someone else who has experience to do it! Once its done, it will need to be maintained more frequently than your usual haircut. I find mine grows very quickly and I need to get the undercut done every month. I go to a local barbers, there's a girl working there who is brilliant at them. Only costs me a fiver and it's quick & easy to get done. I wouldn't trust my DH with the clippers!

I had my hair "thinned out" a few times over the years but it doesn't suit my hair, it ends up looking really frizzy and in bad condition. Nothing has helped my hair to sit as well as the undercut.

Botoxbotox · 10/05/2022 17:04

I just popped I another hairdresser and she said she'd absolutely not do an undercut, I'd hate it and tell everyone she was terrible! This is turning out tricker than I thought.

I've also had my hair thinned before, many times. The shorter bits just make a halo like effect around my head and make my hair even bigger.

I'd love an undercut in the middle of my head really leaving a band at the bottom to still my hair up if needed....I think I've got enough hair to get away with it....just need to find someone who could do it. I don't think they exist.----

I used to get my undercut done at the barber every 5 weeks or so
I went to hairdresser only once in a while for a trim.

Resilience9to5 · 10/05/2022 17:29

Ps i also tried thinning out my hair and it went frazzly. Undercut worked better. Op i liked that the undercut was visible when my hair was in q pony tail. No need to hide it!

Google rosamund pike undercut pony tail

AgentProvocateur · 10/05/2022 17:39

Your hair is like mine, but I live in the Middle East where it’s incredibly humid a lot of the time so mine is sometimes so big that I need to go through doors sideways 😂

When you’re all taking about “undercuts” what do you mean - shaved off underneath?

SecondhandTable · 10/05/2022 17:39

Mine is like yours but even worse because it's mega thick. I hardly ever get it cut, only about twice a year, partly because I don't really trust hairdressers to cut it, tend to get a family friend who is a hairdresser and beautician to cut it. She's of the same ethnic background as me and boosts my confidence with comments about how gorgeously thick my hair is. Whenever I go to other local salons I just get things like "no we can't do that it won't look right" "I can't cut it shorter than this because x y z reason" "WOW your hair is thick isn't it?"/"there's a lot of it isn't there?" with a look of horror/disgust, "when was the last time you had your hair cut?" with a disapproving look...etc!

Personally I like mine quite short because it's just easier. I also think it looks most managed and less frizzy etc straightened, which with two small kids I never have time for especially as my hair is fairly long now. But when it's short obviously it's much quicker to straighten and then looks ok too. Desperately need to get it cut now!

SoManyTshirts · 10/05/2022 17:46

Mine was like this when I was younger, it’s now aged to something more normal. When younger the best style for me was centre part/fringe with the top relatively flat but wavy layers from the top of my ears to below shoulders.

Sort of like the ‘curly mullet’ but far more tidy and not too short on top to avoid spiking!

Sunnytwobridges · 10/05/2022 18:36

I wish i had this problem, mine is thin and doesn't grow at all. So be thankful 😂

Blueberryblueberry · 10/05/2022 18:55

Undercuts are brilliant - I have the same problem. I also have it in a triangle shape as a pp posted above. I'd recommend going to a barbers where they are good with a blade, rather than trusting a hairdresser, as they will be able to get nice straight lines (I speak from experience as mine is wonky). I get my hairdresser to do my normal styling and pop into a barbers in-between now.

Snowyowl78 · 10/05/2022 19:16

I also have very thick hair, hiairdressers nightmare. I have recently bought a GHD glide and I think it’s great and my hair is less frizzy and him much better condition which I think keeps it less ‘big’. My hairdresser also chops into it to think it out.

ShowOfHands · 10/05/2022 19:21

My hairdresser happily does an undercut. You then just need clippers in order to maintain. Go and see a barber if necessary.

cannaethink · 11/05/2022 11:31

Yes to an undercut!
I’ve got loads of fine hair with a daft wave to it. I’ve got a bob, mid neck length, no layers just blunt. And an undercut. I straighten it and always wash at night so it flattens overnight.
I can trim it myself now with two mirrors. I even do a kind of mini fade 😂

MistySkiesAreGone · 12/05/2022 08:26

I have more and thicker hair than you. I keep it long for the weight and get layers/thinning, but never too short or it springs up. I bought the highest wattage blowdryer I could find, to cut down drying time, and use some straighteners. I always pop a blob of anti frizz serum on it, then the hair has a shine to it. I'd like to get some wider pad straighteners to see if that makes it quicker.

Hair does seem like something that other people have figured out, not me!
