How old were you when you stopped wearing sleeveless tops?

Or can we go on wearing them forever?
im 46 and trying to tone my arms as I love sleeveless things. I’m getting there and I’ve lost weight which helps.
but do you think there is an age ceiling anyway? What age does it just stop looking good?

OP posts:
underneaththeash · 03/05/2022 09:15

I'm 47 and wear them - but I do have nice toned arms, I probably wouldn't if I didn't!

StarlightLady · 03/05/2022 10:58

99 perhaps? I'm early 40s and have one on now.

BigWoollyJumpers · 03/05/2022 11:03

There is nothing more ageing than a 3/4 sleeve, personal opinion only 😀 I will continue to wear strappy dresses and tops until I die. If it's hot, why not?

Wear what you want, at any age. Be conventional or be outrageous. Wear a bikini and let it all hang out. Wear high heeled shoes (my DM never gave up on hers even at 90).

KittyWithoutAName · 03/05/2022 11:06

I hate my arms. I don't show my legs either anymore.

I'm only a size 14 5'7.

notacooldad · 03/05/2022 11:07

I still wear them.
I love halter neck tops.
Why not? They suit me and I look good. 🤷‍♀️

hepaticanobilis · 03/05/2022 11:12

My upper arms have always been my least favourite part of my body for some reason so I rarely wear anything sleeveless (I'm late 30s). I don't really find sleeveless any better in hot weather anyway though - if anything, having lots of bare skin feels hotter than wearing lightweight, loose, longer layers in natural fabrics.

Saying that though I definitely don't think there is any age limit!

VaVaVoombangabang · 03/05/2022 12:10

@NerrSnerr no I dont care what others arms look like, but I do care what mine look like and I do not feel comfortable in sleeveless tops and choose not to wear them, as I said wear what you want to wear no-one will care.

I live in the tropics and can quite cope with all types of sleeves in the heat and humidity, and leave the sleeveless versions to those who feel comfortable in them.

How often do you look at someone else and think "her arms really should not be allowed to be seen"..?! My money is on never.

I have no intention to stop wearing sleeveless tops at a certain age!

You’d lose your money then. I don’t care what other people do but I do notice. My arms are staying covered because I don’t want to expose them.

IDidntKnowItWasAParty · 03/05/2022 12:29

50s and still wearing them. Dont intend to ever stop.

Snowiscold · 03/05/2022 12:32

I don’t see why anyone thinks arms shouldn’t be seen. Ok, if you’re 80 and your skin is very wrinkly, you might not want to - but fine if you do. But what possibly could be “wrong” with arms at 40, 50, 60 etc?

KittyWithoutAName · 03/05/2022 12:38

I carry extra weight on the tops of my arm. Plus have bad excoriation disorder which means the skin on my arms is... Not good. I've had a few complete strangers question me over it when I have gone sleeveless - "oh have you had a reaction what's happened?" .... Did it to myself isn't exactly the response I want to give so I lie and say I used a product that have me an itchy rash.

But mainly it's weight. Never had a problem with sleevekess as a teen.

AccessibleVoid · 03/05/2022 12:39

Should really be rephrased "how fat were you" rather than "how old were you" in my case.

wonkygorgeous · 03/05/2022 12:59

I've not stopped yet. I'm mid 50s.

Hoppinggreen · 03/05/2022 13:25

up to you but my 80 year old mum was wearing one yesterday and looked fab

90sBritPop · 03/05/2022 13:37

I stopped once in school because a gym teacher told me I had arms like a frog and I spent a next couple of hot summers sweating in long sleeve tops and trying to eat more. I was about 11.

Then in Uni I developed a thyroid disorder and so as well as the ‘freshers 15’ put on another stone or so and one day in a shop queue some woman behind me giggled to her child that I was fat (I had gone from a size 8 to 12-14 so hardly fat) but I ended up covering my arms the next few summers trying to do weights and starve myself.

Now I look back and I get is angry that I allowed those comments to dictate what I wore and I suffered through several summers at a time when I was actually young and there was nothing wrong with my arms.

So what I’m trying to say to OP and anyone reading this is just screw it and wear the sleeveless tops, screw those people and society and just wear them ☺️☺️☺️

Tryhard40 · 03/05/2022 15:30

I'm 40 and wear them - and doubt I'll ever stop! I don't particularly like my arms but I'd never let that stop me from wearing sleeveless items of clothing that I love - and what would you wear in summer or on holiday?

my dm is 74, wears sleeveless tops all the time and looks great.

i don't understand this mentality of there being a "cut-off" age for wearing certain things.

Shout out to those of you who are bothered about stuff like this: "No-one is looking at you and literally no-one cares!"(Except you).

lindyloo57 · 03/05/2022 17:14

61 I still wear them, I don't like my arms at the top, this year I have noticed they are a bit wrinkled underneath but I will still wear them, I would like to know, if I can still wear a strappy short style playsuit on holiday, or am I too old, it's funny that since I have reached 60 I question what I can still get away with specifically summer clothing.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 03/05/2022 17:16

I cba to deal with armpit hair.

I stopped about 40. Nothing to do with bingo wings though!

TottersBlankly · 03/05/2022 17:24

I’m wondering, OP, if you have perhaps never travelled to any hot country.

Do you think 70 year old Italian women

or 80 year old Nigerian women

or 90 year old Trinidadian women

going about their daily business, wake up in 90 degree heat and think “Oh, I’d better cover up my arms because a woman on Mumsnet thinks I’m not fit to be seen”?

Hmm
Boggydog · 03/05/2022 17:53

I’m 46 and I know what you mean. Too much flesh can look bad at any age but I’m very conscious of my ageing body.

Hmm

People who live in very hot countries tend to cover up. 🤷‍♀️

Blossomtoes · 03/05/2022 18:08

In the Western Region of Nigeria, women can often be seen in their traditional attire of "buba," an airy type blouse with long sleeves, and "iro," the wrapper that's tied on top of the buba. To complete this whole attire, a woman will wear a head wrap (usually in matching fabric). This headwrap is known as "gele."

How old were you when you stopped wearing sleeveless tops?
JanisMoplin · 03/05/2022 18:11

I am 50, and from a hot country. I am not obese but my arms are flabby. I continue to wear sleeveless tops both in the UK and in my home country. They are comfortable and I have plenty of melanin, so I do not burn.

TottersBlankly · 03/05/2022 18:12

Nope. Not in the places I’ve mentioned, anyway. I’m completely familiar with seeing middle aged and elderly women happily going about their day to day lives in sleeveless dresses or strappy tops. They’d laugh at any implication that they should be wrapped up to hide themselves from view.

(I am not talking about places with national / local / religious cultures of covering up.)

DelphiniumBlue · 03/05/2022 18:14

I noticed a big difference between late 50s and early 60s - I would only wear sleeveless now if it was really hot and even then I would be happier if I was tanned. It's not so much bingo wings as overly dimpled. Just doesn't look great on me, sadly. Up until about 58 it really wasn't an issue.
