How old were you when you stopped wearing sleeveless tops?

Or can we go on wearing them forever?
im 46 and trying to tone my arms as I love sleeveless things. I’m getting there and I’ve lost weight which helps.
but do you think there is an age ceiling anyway? What age does it just stop looking good?

What?!! I still wear them at 51 and know women that still wear them in their 80’s without a second thought! Sleeveless tops are just so much cooler than regular short sleeves, and I’ll still wear them in the height of summer even when/if my arms get a bit flabby.

GlamGiraffe · 03/05/2022 05:43

A long as you want to wear them.
If it helps my mother (size 12-14 - and untoned-luckily this is anonymous🤣), is mid 70s, wears sleeveless tops (and dresses),and mid thigh shorts. When its really hot whe wears strappy vest tops. She looks good. The only limit is if you dont actually like them.

User7493268965 · 03/05/2022 05:53

I don't wear them because I try to avoid too much sun but I probably would if I could as my upper arms even at mid 60s are sadly one of my better features, I have always had good arms, shame about the rest

onelostsoulswimminginafishbowl · 03/05/2022 05:54

My nana wears them and she is 92 🤷‍♀️

Vampirethriller · 03/05/2022 05:58

I'm 40 and fat and have no intention of stopping wearing sleeveless tops. Don't like it, don't look at me.

habibihabibi · 03/05/2022 06:37

I always wear long or 3/4 sleeves but love short shorts.

UseOfWeapons · 03/05/2022 07:13

Nearly 56, 38 years of weight training, underweight, and I still have bingo wings! I wear sleeveless tops in the summer, why wouldn’t I, I’m happy with my flappy bits, as I am with my resting bitch face and wrinkles! Who cares about what others think, enjoy the feeling of a breeze under your armpits!

AuntieStella · 03/05/2022 07:17

I haven't stopped. There's no inherent age-related need.

There are a lot of ageist assumptions about what to choose to wear (I assume fuelled by those who want to sell us more garments, by creating redundancies where there is no need)

Check your mirror, not your birth certificate!

DSGR · 03/05/2022 07:40

Thanks all, I was after opinions and that’s what I’ve got. I will keep toning my arms for my own confidence levels but happy to see there is no consensus to cover up after 50!

@Blossomtoes and @VaVaVoombangabang if you see someone without perfect arms with sleeveless tops do you feel they've 'inflicted' them on you?

Seriously- no one cares about your arms and 99% of people you come across probably don't even notice what too you're wearing.

SamMil · 03/05/2022 08:15

How often do you look at someone else and think "her arms really should not be allowed to be seen"..?! My money is on never.

I have no intention to stop wearing sleeveless tops at a certain age!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 03/05/2022 08:19

I wonder how many men are agonising over whether it's still fair to 'inflict' the sight of a body part that falls short of some artificial measure of perfection on people they meet. I'm 60 and I like sleeveless tops when it's warm. If others object to seeing my untoned arms, that's their problem.

Westfacing · 03/05/2022 08:26

As a younger woman I rarely if ever wore anything sleeveless - looking back I must have been mad as there was nothing wrong with my arms, just self-conscious.

I'm now 67 and have no problem wearing sleeveless. I do like a snug fit, not a large gaping armhole where bra and lots of underarm is on show, if you get my drift!

Tagliatellme · 03/05/2022 08:31

Late 50s. Still wear a bikini, never mind sleeveless tops. If other people judge me, that is their issue, not mine.

VintageGibbons · 03/05/2022 08:33

I'm 56. The other day my bootcamp coach told me off for wearing sleeves and said I had toned arms and she wanted me in vest tops from now on so I could get some sun on my skin for summer.

They're not that toned, but it was lovely of her and I've been wearing vests since she said it.

iamsoreadyforbednow · 03/05/2022 08:37

The title had me wondering why you would out-age sleeveless tops so I had to come and see if this was a ‘thing’ - I’m only 26 so assuming I haven’t outgrown them yet!!

However, my mid-70’s Grandma wears lots of sleeveless tops and blouses and she always looks so lovely. I have to say I’ve never stopped to think about an age limit on them, or looked at any older ladies wearing a sleeveless top and thought anything of it.

Besides, if the weathers hot.. what’s a girl to do?! 😁 wear the sleeveless tops!

fortifiedwithtea · 03/05/2022 08:37

56 and obese, I still wear sleeveless tops.

I am a big fan of a Tiktok who calls out how crap plus sized fashion is. I have one cold shoulder top. Thanks to her I can see how ridiculous this is and those sleeves get on my nerves. I keep saying I will remove those cold shoulder sleeves.

Mrsjayy · 03/05/2022 08:38

Op is that really where your at ? Just wear what you want anybody who is "offended" by a 46 year old arm needs to look closely at themselves !

StCharlotte · 03/05/2022 08:45

I'm 58 and have wrinkles on my arms now. Looks bloody awful. Once I've picked up some colour in the garden I'll go public with sleevelessness 😁

Oblomov22 · 03/05/2022 08:45

I'm staggered you are even asking. Why would this even occur to you. Wear what you want.

LaMarschallin · 03/05/2022 08:58

I think that we're lucky these days in that there are fewer "rules" about what people should/shouldn't do at various ages.
I remember my mother getting her waist-length hair, which she wore in a beautiful French pleat, cut and permed because she'd turned 40.
She suddenly looked like all her contemporaries and far less elegant than she had.
If she'd done it because it was far less faff than putting up masses of hair every day, fine, but the reason was that "old women" - at 40! Argh! - shouldn't have long hair.

So I don't think there's a cut off point for sleeveless tops either.

However, speaking for myself and myself only, I generally like to accentuate my positives rather than my negatives.
So, I wouldn't wear a clinging Jersey dress because I have a classic menopausal stomach. I would wear short sleeved tops if I wanted to because my arms look okay to me.
As it happens, I don't tend to wear them because I burn really easily so prefer to cover my shoulders.

I think if you feel happy and comfortable in them, you should wear them.

Actually, on reflection, I did get upgraded on Eurostar because "Aww! You've got a little baby in there, haven't you..." so perhaps I should wear stomach-emphasising dresses when I'm travelling!

tuliplover · 03/05/2022 09:05

My mum wore them all her life (passed away at 89). She was always slim but of course her skin wrinkled with time, but what does one expect?
I don't but more because I'm overweight. I'd love to wear sleeveless tops though (I'm 60), it's one of my motivations to lose weight!

AngelinaFibres · 03/05/2022 09:07

I don't wear them anymore (57) because I think there are things I could wear that are more attractive on me and suit me better. I have slim arms but they look better with a sleeve. That's my personal preference. I don't imagine for a moment that anyone would notice, or care, whether I have a sleeve or not. It's up to you Op. If you want to wear something ,and you feel good in it, then wear it.

RoseLunarPink · 03/05/2022 09:10

Agree with pps, no age limit. I’m in my 50s, size 14 and I love getting my arms out in summer. Vests and sleeveless dresses. One of my most flattering tops is a plain black, loose, linen jersey vest, I love it with jeans, chunky sandals and fashiony shades.

However, having said that, while I am ok with my arms even though they’re not super-toned, I am much less confident about my legs which are cellulitey and uneven with fat knees. And I don’t get them out (except when swimming) because I feel self-conscious. I wear trousers and maxis.

So I would say there’s no age limit, but at the same time if you have a body part you don’t want to display, you don’t have to feel you should for the sake of it, IYSWIM.

Snowiscold · 03/05/2022 09:14

I’m 56 and wear sleeveless tops and dresses frequently in warm weather. The only reason I might deliberately wear sleeves is to avoid sun exposure.
