What are your “aspirational” items?

This question is a little tongue in cheek, but I’m genuinely interested in what you think.

I’m a professional in my mid-30’s. Obviously I’ve been aware that some people like luxury things, but somehow felt myself to be “above” fashion, and very happy with my £30 M&S crossbody etc.

Recently I’ve started upgrading my wardrobe and reading about fashion. I’m getting the impression that there are certain items which show that you’ve MADE IT IN LIFE.

So these are the ones that keep coming up:

  • Mulberry Bayswater

  • Cartier Ballon Bleu / Tank

  • Hermes Birkin / Kelly

  • Hermes silk scarves

  • Chanel classic flap

  • Burberry trench coat

  • Van Cleef Alhambra bracelet

  • Cartier love bracelet

Do you agree/disagree? Have I missed anything?

Just to clarify, this is just a list (for fun) of things that tend to be described as “classic”, “investment pieces” and “everyone should have a…”. My own wishlist is a lot shorter. The bracelets are not to my taste and I’ve gone off Mulberry. One day I hope to buy a Chanel classic flap and maybe a silk scarf or two.

(Namechanged as I may have outed myself on another thread. Been a member for years.)

Oh fgs sake - read the thread and understand it. It's quite clearly about personal satisfaction.

I get it OP. Are these items things you actually want or are they just aspirational because of the way they are perceived? And is part of why you want them, because of the way you think you would then be perceived? And is this also the reason that they would give you pleasure? (Rhetorical questions - I’m saying this is the line of thought!)

I have a Burberry trench coat that I love, but I get this feeling more with my car, it’s a very nice rare one that people do notice, and yesterday I saw someone driving the same one in the same colour and we had a little wave. That gives me pleasure. I do feel like I’ve “made it” car wise. 😀

Yes, status objects. For silly fashion victims. If you buy things simply because you think people will be impressed, they will be less impressed in reality.

As so many things I used to aspire to have increased in cost and popularity dramatically- Chanel flap bag and Cartier Love bangles i’m looking at you - I don’t care to aspire to them now they are way overpriced. I do already have some beautiful things that bring me joy. I bought an LV bag 15 years ago when they were much more affordable at £350 instead of the now ridiculous £1800 and a Mulberry in the half price sale. When I heard Burberry would rather burn their trench coats than reduce them down in cost that disgusted me.

I owned a classic flap but sold it. Always wanted one. It was beautiful but made me feel old. I'd love a chanel boy bag, dark green perhaps.
I'd also love a max mara coat and balmain blazer but my weight yo yos so there is no point.
I'd love some good jewelry, relax date just watch and good cashmere jumpers. Decent boots and be able to spend money on a top notch hairdresser.

Some people just have lots and lots of money and they enjoy spending it. They're not victims and they don't care what other people think.

Why are you even bothering wasting time on this thread? You've already made your point (can't remember exactly if it was this one or the similar one) how superior you are and how silly everyone else is.

I can tell you one thing-you're not impressing anyone.

Well said!
Gwenhwyfar, I like fashion but I wouldn't consider myself a fashion victim. Also, when I buy something it is a little reward/treat for myself and not to impress anybody. I believe in "living well" and there are things that make my life more enjoyable like cashmere sweaters, nice handbags, good watch, holidays abroad, staying in hotels not self catering, good food. As a family we had more than our share of difficult times (personal and financial) ,we are careful with money ,we save, invest, overpay the mortgage etc... but I am glad that at my age I can also enjoy some frivolousness that makes my life a little more pleasurable and comfortable.

Tillsforthrills · 08/05/2022 14:28

@Gwenhwyfar also came on my S&B thread about luxury items and asserted that i somehow felt unworthy and who was I trying to impress because of it.

She seems to have an axe to grind and far too invested in putting other women down on this topic.
