i'm a short, stout, apple shaped , tomboy, (aged late 50's+ Wink ) always, always wear trousers, flat shoes, hate anything tight, and look awful in pastels, as i am very ruddy-faced

any inspiration from style and beauty mavens? please?

If you look on weird fish they have some quite smart cropped trousers jumpsuits. The yellow one is definitely wedding suitable, mines blue with tiny pineapples on. Would dress up nicely

Alwayspaintyournails · 19/04/2022 21:30

What size? How tall? Best colours? Favourite feature?

guffaux · 19/04/2022 21:35

thanks- the jumpsuits on there are sleeveless and knee length/just below- my shoulders and arms are like a docker's, and my calves riddled with varicose veins (as you might imagine, I'm a babe!!! Grin )

  • my preference would be to be covered from chin to ankle , in a nice sludge colour to blend into the background, I just havent found anything like that (yet)

Linen well cut trousers, with a shalwar kameez style top, or even better - style it up with a Brideshead style male linen blazer.

If it’s good linen yes it wrinkles but if it’s lovely heavy Irish linen the creases are part of the style. Good linen creases beautifully and one knows it is linen!

ExMachinaDeus · 19/04/2022 21:54

And some nice leather classy brogues. Even a Panama hat

Channel Sebastian Flyte.

TottersBlankly · 19/04/2022 21:54

Budget??

ExMachinaDeus · 19/04/2022 21:57

Have a look at brands like Cos maybe (although their sizes and cut seem to be for 6footers with no curves). Reid’s is good for tailored stuff.

Do you know a good dress maker? I thank my lucky stars I make most of my own clothes. Currently channeling a kind of Annie Hall look with some gorgeous Donna Karan trouser suits I’m making in linen and silk.

TottersBlankly · 19/04/2022 22:02

Not green but far from pastel. And leaves forearms uncovered.

(Getting it in before you say budget £6.99 for whole outfit. Easter Grin )

ExMachinaDeus · 19/04/2022 22:02

And you say no pastels - what about a really nice navy blue with bright white shirt?

TottersBlankly · 19/04/2022 22:05

Green, green green! Money no object from Marina Rinaldi.

guffaux · 19/04/2022 22:07

budget under 200 preferably- I so seldom go anywhere dressed up I'll likely only wear the outfit once

around 6 years ago I wore greige linen tailored trousers and top with a black linen jacket- unfortunately the outfit didnt wear well and I looked like a bag lady by midday Blush

I rather like the anti-style style of Plümo - pricey but all good strong linen and cotton. There’s some fun stuff. Ditto with Toast.

If you don’t want to do Hobbs or After Eight style “lady like” then go full on boho!

ExMachinaDeus · 19/04/2022 22:10

Go for wool then, if you don’t like the effect of linen. A good fine wool will keep its shape. But it’s hard to get decent tailoring for £200

guffaux · 19/04/2022 22:10

ooh Totters- I love that green suit!- wonder if I could hire it...? off to look Smile

Slimline trousers and a tunic - search ebay for something kimono/nehru like.

guffaux · 19/04/2022 22:18

I just dont have the personality to carry off Plumo unfortunately

Jolly good!

Alternatively, here’s something out of your comfort zone from Reformation.

TheCaddieisaBaddie · 19/04/2022 22:23

Yours clothing have some maxi style dresses which are nice, team up with a jacket / blazer for further coverage.

guffaux · 19/04/2022 23:14

Roses- i kind of think that's what I may go for-more nehru than kimono though as with my shoulders a bit of structure seems better for me?

I love the shibumi coats but they are a bit (a lot!) out of my price range for one wearing- I'd have to frame it and put it in the wall to justify the cost!

OP posts:
guffaux · 19/04/2022 23:14

on the wall!

I would consider a jumpsuit and that green phase eight is lovely- but my very round and prominent torso and somewhat dimpled and saggy bum would possibly not do it justice?

anything near the tummy looks like granny's ornament sitting on a shelf on me- I tried on a peplum top once, and looked like Petunia from the safety adverts wearing a rubber ring Blush

Three suggestions from Zara. Their sizing is a bit variable so no telling whether their XL would fit or not. There are co-ordinating items for each piece.

I should say I strongly disapprove of buying to wear once - but I’m not invited, and I guess you could sell or give away afterwards.
