Why not bright colours with black

Could someone explain why this is a rule I see on Instagram? If you care about such things, what colour tops are deemed appropriate for wearing with eg black wide-leg trousers?

(Asking out of interest only, it won’t stop me wearing bright pink with black)

No idea. I like bright tops with black bottoms.

AnyFucker · 12/04/2022 14:01

Wear what you like.

Personally, I don’t like bright colours with black. It reminds me of the 80’s (not in a good way) and it certainly ages me. Too much contrast.

With black I would wear grey, caramel, cream and other muted toning shades. I don’t wear much black though.

EleanorDeCleaner · 12/04/2022 14:02

I remember that from What Not To Wear (Trinny and Susannah) - "DON'T WEAR COLOUR WITH BLACK! DON'T WEAR COLOUR WITH BLACK!"

I always do and I don't give two shits, what else am I supposed to wear with my loud garish blouses? I totally want to be one of the eccentric ageing ladies dressed like I walked through a washing line. With bright lippy.

fedupwithitnow · 12/04/2022 14:09

I tend to wear white cream or grey with black trousers but have got a khaki top on with black jeans today

I remember Trinny and Susannah saying this but it does make it limiting

moonbedazzled · 12/04/2022 14:10

Obviously people can wear any colour they like but black does change the tone of the lighter colour.

EleanorDeCleaner · 12/04/2022 14:12

I avoid light colours, they just make me look wider and heavier than ever.

ClaudiusTheGod · 12/04/2022 14:15

Ok, that’s interesting- I get the 80s reminder and see the point about black changing the tone of the lighter colour. So - say I had a bright colour on top - vibrant pink or blue, what would that colour look good with?

OP posts:
Parker231 · 12/04/2022 14:15

I love bright colours and wear them with black most work days. Why not - they look good.

WeSellAnyBra · 12/04/2022 14:15

I don’t follow this rule. Granted I’m 40+ and not interested in Instagram fashion tips, but I often wear slim black trousers or capris with a brightly coloured blouse. Jewel colours - raspberry red, cobalt blue, emerald green - suit me, so I wear them! I do also have silky blouses in white, beige/champagne, pale grey etc, but I feel at my best in bright colours on top.

I also often wear black gym leggings and a bright top to the gym.

Who makes up these rules?!

WeSellAnyBra · 12/04/2022 14:16

The trousers/blouses are for work, btw

PierresPotato · 12/04/2022 14:17

Yes iirc it was Trinny and Susannah!

NeedleNoodle3 · 12/04/2022 14:19

Bright with black really suits me, bright pink, electric blue, red etc look great with my black clothes.

NeedleNoodle3 · 12/04/2022 14:19

Just realised that’s what I’m wearing today.

WeSellAnyBra · 12/04/2022 14:19

Teint and Susannah is so dated, now, though! The only thing I ever learned from them is that a properly fitted bra can take pounds off you!

samsera · 12/04/2022 14:22

I think of lime green or fluorescent orange or pink with black, and the 80s. My mother always said don't wear blue and black it looks like a bruise.

Otherwise it looks fine. Though I also wear blue and black.

evilharpy · 12/04/2022 14:23

Trinny and Susannah also said to wear trousers underneath skirts!

fedupwithitnow · 12/04/2022 14:24

@evilharpy

Trinny and Susannah also said to wear trousers underneath skirts!
And wrap dresses

Everything was about bootcut trousers

There's a lot of debate about whether black is even a colour. If you look at the colour wheel, which many designers use, it doesn't appear and the recommendation is to use either contrasting or complementary colours. Lots about this online so won't go on here. But when you pick a colour that actually works scientifically with another it is more pleasing to the eye. So it's nice to pick out a colour from a pattern rather than going for black.

Black sucks the life out of bright colours and jars imo. There isn't really another colour with the same depth unless you count white (which is a classic combination). Black is the default for lots of people but it doesn't suit most. Mainly Winters. It's tricky because things like trousers seem to come in black and grey, sometimes navy, rarely brown.

I think it's also about standing out, which is what many Instagram influencers are aiming for. A top and black trousers is a common look. It's harder to find some green trousers to go with that green and pink top but it looks much more vibrant and 'right' in the end. And finally it's also about money and space since if you are only buying 1-2 pairs of trousers, green is probably not your first choice. You've also got footwear to think about, as black shoes also suck colour and life. Unless you put together a very careful capsule wardrobe, you need more clothes overall. Though I think colourful bottoms are more versatile than they first appear.

Bright colours are particularly fashionable at the moment but look best and most stylish with other colours of the same depth. Same with interior design.

As with most things it's how much you care and how much time and energy you want to devote to it.

samsera · 12/04/2022 14:25

I didn't think much of Trinny and Susannah. They often seemed to put people out of their comfort zone in almost the opposite style of what they might usually wear and not always fit the better.

samsera · 12/04/2022 14:26

For the better

hoorayandupsherises · 12/04/2022 14:26

I like bright colours on top, usually wear denim or grey with them, but do sometimes wear black. But I do feel a bit 1980s as someone said earlier.

DarkCorner · 12/04/2022 14:28

I think it just became a bit of an unimaginative uniform at one point - black trousers everywhere then "brighten them up with a bright top" so that's why trinny and Susannah vetoed it. but can look really nice like this pic. I personally like yellow or orange with black. Or bright tops with grey/navy trousers look lovely and a bit less harsh contrast. And jeans of course. I also like black stripes with bright accessories like the second pic.

So true, trouser colours mare very limited and then you buy a top and it's easier to stick it with black trousers already in your wardrobe

I like grey trousers but haven't seen any of late in M&S

samsera · 12/04/2022 14:32

Black and orange always reminds me of Halloween costumes. Probably silly.

samsera · 12/04/2022 14:33

silly of me!
