Lipstick for over 50s with "no faff" benefits

I never thought much about lipstick, I just bought a colour that I liked and wore it: the only thing that could go wrong was, indeed, the colour. But I am not fussy.
I now seem to have a problem: I cannot splash lipstick on my lips as I used to.
When quick zig-zagging started looking weird, I did avail myself of a contouring pencil (a suggestion found here)....but even that help seems to be gone.
Now some of you are fond of primer, but primer+pencil+lipstick is a bit too much, considering how many times a day I apply lipstick....
I would love love love to wear on special occasions a deep bright red without it splashing all over my face, but my favourite Dior 999 does not look right anymore....
Do I have to go for lipgloss? If so, which one?

Help!

What is it that you don't like? Does it bleed or look dry? Or is it the shape of your lips?

I like Dr Organics lip balm and then either a strong colour dabbed on or a more subtle colour applied in the classic way straight from the bullet. (I'm nearly 50)

Gardeningcreature · 09/04/2022 21:49

Hihello Can I ask does that lip balm stop bleeding?

Possiblynotever · 09/04/2022 21:55

Well, probably the shape of my lips has changed and they are not so full anymore and the lipstick just does not seem to look right. It also tends to spread outside the lips borders...I have started using a Clinique chubby crayon which looks natural but as soon as I wear a bit of colour it does not stay so well....

@Gardeningcreature, not sure. It certainly doesn't cause the lipstick to bleed though.

hihellohihello · 09/04/2022 22:33

Maybe a highly pigmented stain might work regarding longevity with a balm over if your lips are dry. And if you outline lips slightly outside your lip line you might like the shape better.

JaneJeffer · 09/04/2022 22:44

Have you tried clear lipliner?

Flipflopssndsocks · 09/04/2022 22:54

Use one of the lip paints like Rimmel’s provocalips then use a lip gloss over the top. It won’t budge snd the gloss softens the look.

Possiblynotever · 10/04/2022 08:32

Well thanks! Clear lipliner? Unknown object...googled it but it mainly comes up in nude colour....is this the right thing?
I like the idea of a "lip paint" but it usually dries my lips to the point of crack. Does the Rimmel one avoid this side effect? Some of you said "balm under" and some "balm over"....
If you spread a balm below, doesn't this make the lipstick less durable? But probably lips crack less

Also, the more I use lipstick the more my lips seem to get dry Whatever lipstick: Macs, l'Oreal, Chanel (yes, oh dear, what a waste of money!)

Beauty:The lip trick I'm plumping for www.dailymail.co.uk/home/you/article-10687517/Beauty-lip-trick-Im-plumping-for.html?ito=native_share_article-masthead
This is in today's magazine - might be worth a look?

Possiblynotever · 10/04/2022 14:41

Thanks Billandben444...I have tried similar pencils but they do not work! And blimey! £87 for a lip gloss????

Gosh, didn't look at the price - sorry!

Bearnecessity · 10/04/2022 19:54

Always sworn by Revlon for lips colour, texture staying power tops...

PlainJaneEyre · 10/04/2022 19:57

I use 999. Go to the Dior counter and buy the liner that matches it or their Universal Contour. It's 22 pounds.

hihellohihello · 10/04/2022 20:04

Not my experience, particularly. The one I use (the coconut one Dr Organics from Holland Barrett), has a great texture for under lipstick I find. It softens well and doesn't make the lipstick gloopy at all. I only really need to reapply after eating. I wouldn't go back now to wearing lipsticks without it, they seem very drying in comparison.

hihellohihello · 10/04/2022 20:05

Has SPF15 too.Smile

hihellohihello · 10/04/2022 20:06

It will go under or over lipstick. With a lip paint or stain I would only put it over as that stuff often needs to 'set'.

BusterGonad · 10/04/2022 20:10

Have you tried applying your foundation around and slightly over your lips, then lip liner then lipstick. I actually prefer to line my lips after the lipstick but what ever suits you. Maybe a dash of gloss on the lower lip to enhance them. You could watch Lisa Eldridge lipstick tutorial on You tube too.

Possiblynotever · 10/04/2022 20:37

@PlainJaneEyre indeed Devil 999 is my favourite for the evening...although the pigment is so strong it needs very careful application. But it looks oh so good on everyone!

Never tried Revlon, will give it a look.

Lip stains only dry my lips and over 50s cannot afford that.

None of you mentioned a coloured lip balm...I used to have one by a brand called Perricone (weird name, I bought it at TKMaxx) and it was truly good....but lost it

Burt's Bees do coloured lip balms - widely available.

Possiblynotever · 11/04/2022 08:50

Yes they are lovely but fade after 5 minutes

Maybelline superstay do not shift at all.

PlainJaneEyre · 11/04/2022 09:38

@Possiblynotever have you tried the Dior lip tattoo?

Possiblynotever · 11/04/2022 10:14

@PlainJaneEyre no I have not nor I have tried the Maybelline: I always worry that my lips will be too dry...does it dry lips? Do they keep a bit of shine?

Red lipstick tends to bleed more than other colours
I like tinted lipsalves like Burt's Bees
