I'd like a makeover - which beauty brand?

I'm early 50s and would like a bit of help with updating my look.

I have mainly worn tinted moisturiser with powder all my life and have dry skin and I'd like to look a bit more dewy, less tired and just... glow. I'm also not sure how to use blush and eyeshadow as my face ages.

In the past I've had make up demos from Benefit, Bare Minerals and Chanel but these were probably 10-15 years ago. I liked them but not sure they will meet my requirements now I'm older.

Can anyone recommend a brand to give me a dewy look? Or products to try?

I would look for a make up artist that is local to you who gives you a make up lesson. Many of the bridal make up people do this as well. She would be able to give great advice.

I’d try Bobbi Brown or Nars

Girlintheframe · 08/04/2022 06:29

I would second Bobbi brown or Nars too.

ElenaSt · 08/04/2022 06:38

Lancôme.

OutingHobby · 08/04/2022 06:41

Chanel, bobbi brown, No.7, if you like what you see online then you could try charlotte tilbury but they tend to go for masses of GLOW

thesnaleandthewhail · 08/04/2022 06:47

I would suggest you book at least three counter trials because never know if you will like the products or the artist on the day. For my wedding for example I went to three different Bobbi brown counters and only one of them did a good job (incidentally I'm stil using the products I bought 10 years on).

I'd suggest Bobbi brown, Chanel, and maybe one wild card that takes your fancy.

My experience of make up artists has been poor so personally I'd avoid that because it could get expensive and they don't always have the same range of products you can try at a counter.

I've always found Laura Mercier good for more subtle, wearable look.

Trinny London! Their stuff looks gorgeous. I think there's a real counter in Selfridges in London, otherwise online and there are tools to help you match yourself to different items 😊

Divebar2021 · 08/04/2022 06:56

From the high street I’d definitely choose Bobbi Brown or if you have one nearby Space NK for a range of brands. (££££ though) For a slightly cheaper brand I like Glossier products which vere towards light and natural not “done”. I particularly like their skin tint, stretch concealer, boy brow, gel tint for cheeks and their priming moisturiser. They have a product called Futuredew which is “glowy” which I don’t have much experience with but has good reviews.
I’m nearly 50. I got a dewy complexion using The Ordinary retinoid 2% www.boots.com/the-ordinary-granactive-retinoid-2-emulsion-10267778?cm_mmc=bmm-buk-google-ppc--PLAs_HeroCompare--Beauty_Premium-_-UK_Smart_Shopping_Beauty_Premium_The_Ordinary&gclid=Cj0KCQjwl7qSBhD-ARIsACvV1X1ejtMA7u5sEa2SkETt1b56xfGillFLbKEjDggiz4aQldBcV_CUuh0aAlOaEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
Well that's interesting as I bought a stronger Ordinary retinoid but haven't started using it yet

Plenty of suggestions for Bobbi Brown so perhaps that will be my first port of call. These makeovers are definitely the type of look I would like to see. Anyone know a good Bobbi brown counter / MUA in London?

Charlotte Tilbury

Lndnmummy · 08/04/2022 18:13

Hourglass makeup is lovely on 40 plus skin. Their selfridges counter is great.

Tinkletwat · 08/04/2022 19:04

Laura Mercier

SevernEleven · 08/04/2022 22:01

Try Space NK that way you're not tied to one brand. They have Erborian, Nars, Laura Mercier, Hourglass, It Cosmetics, Chantecaille, Charlotte Tilbury etc

elidelochanthefirst · 08/04/2022 22:33

I'd also think about your skincare, makeup on a smooth well hydrated base makes so much difference. What do you use currently?

Horological · 08/04/2022 22:40

I recommend Trinny London too. I had a makeover at Fenwicks recently and it was great. The look is dewy and most of her products are geared to over 40 complexions. Have a look at her on instagram, facebook or on the website.

Delilah make up is lovely and light. Gives deey appearance

There used to be a French mua called Agnes in Bobbi Brown in Covent Garden who was brilliant. If she’s still there, she’s your woman.

Blondie1984 · 09/04/2022 01:46

I went to the Harrods beauty hall recently and it was fabulous - the consultants aren’t tied to any particular brand and so recommend what really works - eg in my trip I got an Armani foundation, YSL primer and lipstick and Nars blusher

Malibuismysecrethome · 09/04/2022 04:22

A couple of years ago I went to a Bobby Brown counter and was sold foundation, concealer and blusher that were completely the wrong shade for me when I got home. I would hold out and not buy until you have tried several brands.

AuntieMarys · 09/04/2022 05:32

I went to the beauty bar at John Lewis....was excellent. She used products from different counters...BB, Urban Decay, Nars.....and all were spot on

You are right about the underlying skin being important. I am quite fastidious about cleansing, toning and moisturising plus eye cream but am not loyal to any particular brand. I use a lot of Simple products as my face and neck can be a little sensitive but have also recently used L'Oréal age defence and various Nuxe moisturisers from a gift set. I have so many sample sized scrubs and masks which I am trying to use 1-2 times a week.

I'm also trying to up my water intake to tackle my skin from both inside and out.
