Washable sanitary towels

ImAvingOops · 06/04/2022 20:00

Neither stylish or beautiful but unfortunately necessary. I want to buy washable sanitary towels and there are loads on Amazon but I'm getting bogged down in the choice and in the conflicting reviews.
So I want to buy ones that people have actually used and found to be good and I trust you all on S&B to tell me what's worth buying because these aren't cheap.
Ideally I'd like long, heavy flow, not plasticky on the top but also not ones that feel wet. One of the reviews said to get the fleece topped ones to avoid the wet feel, but what do you all think?
What have you tried that you thought were better than disposable?
Thanks all

Id go for period pants instead - the best!

SirVixofVixHall · 06/04/2022 20:02

I found Charlie Banana ones from earthwisegirls coped better than anything else with peri meno flooding. I wear them some of the time and period pants the rest of the time.

ofwarren · 06/04/2022 20:03

I use Bloom and Nora and they are very good. I dont feel wet or sticky in them.

Cheeky Wipes do the washable pads and period pants. After trying both I personally preferred the pants. The pads can feel a bit bulky

MrsRubyMonday · 06/04/2022 20:05

I have these and they are great. Currently out of stock but as a reference for what to look for: Xinzistar Washable Sanitary Pads Set, 12PCS Reusable Sanitary Napkin, Washable Menstrual Panty Pads for Girls/Women, with 1 Waterproof Storage Bag

www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08P1PJXKY/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_0G7A8FAAW5EKQSBX24KR?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

The pul layer is waterproof without being plastic feeling, the bamboo is super soft and highly absorbent so I never feel wet except possibly in the few seconds after a bit of a flood which I think is true of any pads. I love the range of sizes, I use the smallest ones for the spotting days, the rectangular ones are perfect for most of my period and the extra wide ones are perfect at night when I often used to get leaking. I won't ever go back.

ImAvingOops · 06/04/2022 20:06

Thank you.
I'm a bit scared of the pants. Do they leak and do you have to change them every time you pee? Sorry, bit graphic

Earthwise girls pads are good. For a heavier flow I use reusable pads in period pants. Modibodi are my fave period pants but cheeky wipes are good too

JamMakingWannaBe · 06/04/2022 20:11

Period pants definitely.

I found the popper fixings on pads made them move around too much.

I started with Primark ones (!) and I've been impressed. I was on the bus to work and had an "OH SHIT" moment when I thought I'd not used San Pro that's how much like regular knickers they are.

Sainsbury's are rated on here as are modi body.

If you have a feminist vibe make sure their marketing says "women" rather than "people" have periods.

Elodie741 · 06/04/2022 20:11

Another vote for Charlie Banana pads they are very good if you have heavy flow and don’t feel wet.

purplesequins · 06/04/2022 20:12

I'm in forrin but bought rovtop ones, can see sets of those on amazon uk as well.
reasonably priced.
very comfortable.
wash well.

tbh I feel cheated by disposable ones - the reusable ones are so much more absorbent.

Maxifly · 06/04/2022 20:19

Or for a light/medium flow, try a natural sponge, rinse and reuse.

ImAvingOops · 06/04/2022 20:19

MrsRubyMonday I found these on Amazon. Are they similar to what you have?

I did eye up the Primark period pants but was worried about trusting something so important to Primark. Don't know what because I've had loads of things from there which have been really good. Glad to know that they've been tried and are good.

I'd never buy any product marketed for 'people' who have periods rather than women! Even if it was really good.

Thank you for all the replies. I'm drawn to the ones that come in grey or black (like everything else I own) because I think they might be easier to get the marks out of.

I use pads fr bloom and Nora. They're very good.

CheeseMuffin · 06/04/2022 20:32

The Primark ones aren't bad actually. Definitely worth a try as they're much cheaper than other options. I don't trust any period pants to provide protection on heavy days but they are fine for lighter ones or as backup to tampons or overnight pads.

JamMakingWannaBe · 06/04/2022 20:36

Primark. Set of 3 for £13.
Just try them if nothing else.
I found they came up a tiny bit small (most probably because DH put them in the tumble!) but I found a 12/14 is more a size 12 than a size 14.

Whatwouldscullydo · 06/04/2022 20:36

Provided you aren't in a hard water area I'd realky recommend honor your flow pads. Expensive but extremely good!

Also highly recommend lady days or tcs eco.

Homestead emporium are fab too but hard to source in the UK.

Lady days and tcs eco also do period pants.

Check out luxury moon too. She sells a range of products

BrownTableMat · 06/04/2022 20:43

I much prefer washable pads over period pants. I have heavy periods and there’s no way I’d want to wear the same pants all day even if they could cope with the flow.

My favourite and most reliable pads are the fairy hammocks from weenotions. I always wear them overnight and often in the day, but the heavy flow ones are quite bulky and visible under trousers so I have to wear a dress/skirt if I want to wear them in the day. I also have some by Fern which are a lot thinner and capable of being worn under trousers but I trust them very slightly less, and some from TCS Eco which are lovely and thin but very expensive.

I’ve also had success in the past with some cheapos from Amazon but only for mid-light flow days and the ones I have aren’t on there any longer, sorry.

I think that micro fleece is the best topping for feeling dry; I also like cotton or cotton towelling though and that does feel more natural. My go to weenotion heavy pads are mostly topped with micro fleece. Another reason I dislike period pants (and I’ve tried a few) is that they’re of such unnatural material and I find that sweaty and uncomfortable.

EssexLioness · 06/04/2022 20:43

Cheeky Wipes. I have their pants and pads. The pads are bulky but feel comfy and I use them when needed with the pants for extra protection

ButterflyBitch · 06/04/2022 20:52

Sounds really old lady but the m and s period pants are lovely. Comfy, do the job and look nice. I wear with a menstrual cup on the heavier days. Just looked for the ones I’ve got and they’re no longer on the site. But I promise they do look nice!

MrOllivander · 06/04/2022 20:53

Second honour your flow. I use those for v v heavy days
These are my faves

Watto1 · 06/04/2022 20:57

Whatever brand you get, I would recommend ones with a grey or black absorbent side. The first pads I bought were white and looked permanently grubby very quickly. My grey/black ones still look new after over a year.

Standardmess · 06/04/2022 20:58

I've been using cloth pads for a couple of years and my favourite brand for light/medium days or for wearing under fitted clothes is Bare and Boho. Also like Red Rags, although they are bulkier they're great for overnight. I have a couple of Bloom and Nora but hardly ever reach for them unless I'm behind on washing. Have a look at this website - loads of advice and choice of brands

ImAvingOops · 06/04/2022 21:05

Thanks again all. I will have a look at all these sites tomorrow. I don't actually mind bulky ones, my favourite disposable ones are Kotex night towels which are enormous but don't leak and aren't scented.
