I am so sick of the frizz, it’s really getting me down and NOTHING seems to work.

From Olaplex to Cantu, Curlsmith to Tigi. Expensive, cheap, it’s ALL USELESS.

I have medium-fine hair but MASSES of it, seriously loads and loads, shoulder blade length, some quite curly parts, some wavy.

I know treatments, shampoos and conditioners are all part of it but honestly my hair is pretty well moisturised, it’s soft to the touch. Unless there is some amazing frizzy reducing range I am missing (Aveda damage remedy?) I don’t think I need to spend any more time or money investigating those steps.

I feel like I CANNOT find the right product to put on it to reduce the frizz, either on damp or on dry hair. Nothing helps.

I know I KNOW CG works for many and I know you have to persist. For me (I tried for months) it left me with worse frizz or a kind of awful stringiness, especially when I used any gel. I tried products in sparing amounts but the ones that made me look greasy and stringy still made that effect in small amounts, just with worse frizz too.

I have kept the CG idea of microfibre towel. I use hairdryers sparingly but if I let it totally air dry the frizz is worse than ever. I only wash 2 times a week max. I use a silk pillow.

I have had no success at all with any gel, as I say, and not much luck with creams or balms. Would a serum work???!!! An oil?? Do I go old school and try Frizz Ease, even though I remember it from olden times and it was another one that used to have the dreaded stringy effect!!

Please, ANY styling products you can recommend for impossible frizz. I look ridiculous. I don’t mind some texture, I’m happy to have natural waves or curls, I just see other people with so so much less frizz and I hate the fact I can never seem to achieve that!!

(I recognise it’s a first world problem but this is S&B) Blush

Prevent build up just use a clarifying shampoo. The Avalon organic lemon one is nice.

I think personally try both the frizz ease and the serum and see what works.

For what it works, I’ve got wavy hair which if I don’t comb it drys into nice waves ringlets etc. But I can’t be bothered doing curly girl method though I tried the co washing once. I just prefer it straighter.

I’ve got the type of hair which really suits perms - they look natural but just can’t be fussed going down that route.

I have wavy curly but fine hair (think I am a 3c or 3b?)

I love Boucleme gel creme for curly days. Wash, brush in shower with wet brush, Boucleme in and then leave and scrunch when dry. Sometimes it needs a little argan oil just to smooth the flyaways but it's been a game changer for me.

The boots curl creme was too heavy for my hair, god though it is.

AnnaMagnani · 03/04/2022 19:08

I like Only Curls and Boucleme. I also like Jessicurl which has helpful videos on the website. Totally agree I had high hopes for Curlsmith and it was awful.

For me the key has been using a lot, as in masses of conditioner. Think about it more as moisturiser for your hair. Gel doesn't work properly unless it's on properly moisturised hair.

iCouldSleepForAYear · 03/04/2022 19:12

Have you tried a Denman brush to distribute product through wet or damp hair? One of the black handled ones with the red pad and white plastic bristles? They're not much use for detangling, but they make an amazing difference when it comes to styling.

Any leave-in conditioner, curl cream, or serum that I use (currently either Eleven Australia or Pantene) works better if I rake the product through damp or wet hair with my fingers, and then use the Denman brush to lift my hair at the roots and gently brush outward.

It's a bit like having five small wide-toothed combs stacked on top of each other. Helps get clumping back after applying product, and then I can gently scrunch (with or without gel on my hands) and then diffuse dry (high heat, low speed settings for me).

Lindy2 · 03/04/2022 19:13

My daughter has very long curly hair so we've been trying various methods and products to reduce the frizz.

I only use conditioner now for washing her hair. It gets it clean but without stripping it of oils like shampoo seems to do.

I also comb through Cantu leave in conditioner and let it dry naturally as much as possible.

It looks even better with a squirt of mousse but she doesn't like the crunchy feel of product so we don't use any.

If it frizzes up between washes then FrizzEze or a bit of coconut oil helps that, although the curls become more wavy than curly after that.

CrumpetandSausage · 03/04/2022 19:16

The only thing that worked for me to tame frizz was the Japanese Yuko straightening. Is permanent. I’ve now embraced my wavy frizzy hair and mostly just cope with it as it comes now.

anon2022anon · 03/04/2022 19:17

Wavy here, and the thing that I've found makes most difference is the way I put product on. Comb through hair when conditioner is on, rinse out, and then use prayer hands to put on curl creme, then plop. After a while, I use prayer hands again to gelz scrunch gently and normally diffuse. I also use a bit of serum or hairspray on my hands to pat down any frizz at the roots.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 03/04/2022 19:32

I love the ordinary hemi- squalane for frizz. I use it on damp or dry hair and it really helps. On dry hair it will look oily at first but it’s a weird watery oily texture which soaks in over about 20 minutes and it leaves my fine but fluffy hair smooth and shiny.

Nothing else has ever really worked as well, except heat styling which makes the problem worse in the long run.

Roastbeefandyorkshires · 03/04/2022 19:34

Kevin Murphy's Easy Rider anti-frizz creme is the BEST.

SauvignonGrower · 03/04/2022 19:41

I also can't do curly girl. Doesn't work. Too much hassle on my hair.

Have you tried using old fashioned mousse? Any old cheap brand. When your hair isn't super-thick, mousse it easier to distribute in tiny amounts compared to gel products. I use a golf ball size on wet hair. Scrunch and twist bits at front, diffuse to three-quarters dry.

Lots of gels and serums are just too heavy for my hair. I do always have a bottle of frizz ease serum lying about, but use it extremely sparingly for the odd place where it needs it.

BaggiesBride · 03/04/2022 19:42

My routine is, Charles Worthington leave in conditioner and then Tigi Rock Amplifier for curly hair. Allow to dry naturally.

QQQs · 03/04/2022 19:52

I'd really recommend Mixed Chicks or Unite. The curly hair styling crème in the Unite range is the best and I also try lots of different products . Good luck!

JaceLancs · 04/04/2022 00:11

Osis curling cream strength no 3
I used to love their twin curl cream but it was discontinued
Previously was a huge fan of samy products but no longer available in uk
Cantu products just don’t work on my hair and boots pink curling cream only lasts in crispy stages then just flops

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 04/04/2022 00:18

You need L'Oréal extraordinary hair oil, put it on when it's damp and comb through and style.

UltimateIrritant · 04/04/2022 00:26

Boots curl cream - sooooo cheap, yet so effective. I have defined curls not frizz now

YoureBreakingMyHeartCecilia · 04/04/2022 13:20

Huge thanks again everyone.

Extraordinary oil and boots Curl Creme are now on my list.

I will have a closer look at some of the other products recommended too!

Just another FYI OP, Osis products I’ve found on the whole are amazing! Not that many salons sell them (you can buy online) but I’ve loved them when I’ve had them.

The Eleven Australia serum someone mentioned I tried it as a replacement for an Aveda one but just didn’t love/like it.

I bought a Kevin Murphy product the other week it’s a shine spray (conditioning) - the salon was trying to sell me a serum or leave in conditioner but I have my own leave in conditioners which I like (Redken one united and Tigi bed head Ego Boost) not at same time!

Update us how you get on!

Gonnagetgoing · 04/04/2022 13:43

I’ve just seen styling. Have you tried looking at you tube blow drying videos? Or babyliiss big hair?

I’ve got a friend who probably has similar hair to you but hates it and spends most mornings blow drying it into shape. It’s not what I’d do but she says it’s the only thing that works, she’s used to it as her morning routine.

Frenziedandfurious · 04/04/2022 13:53

I have your hair too and have yet to find a decent product so am watching with interest.

As a side note does anyone know of a decent curly hairdresser greater Manchester/Cheshire? Last place I went they straightened it poker straight to cut it... And curly it's now in bushy triangles with no layers. I actually despair...

LadyHenryofRawlinsonEnd · 04/04/2022 14:02

I'd suggest stopping altogether.
I have naturally frizzy, porous hair and it doesn't like products AT ALL>.
Since quitting this merrygoround of insanity and expense, my hair has been much more compliant and felt healthier.

I think the important thing is at the washing stage, a decent shampoo, leave in conditioner and air-drying for me. Sometimes add a bit of apple cider vinegar in the rinse or rinse with filtered water from my Britta jug!
My frizz tends to drop out after a few hours.

However, if you are straightening hair, I can't suggest a solution as you will need something to protect from the heat which will add build up and encourage ore frizz down the line. It's a vicious cycle, but I do think that less is more when dealing with porous hair.

Largely most specialised products are likely to be a con. My rule is if it isn't aimed at men too, it probably is bollocks.

LadyHenryofRawlinsonEnd · 04/04/2022 14:04

And let's be honest, look at how many products are suggested in these threads, it's a real money maker for corporate!

Hair is very individual and what works for one person's frizz WON"T work for mine, etc. It is a losing game and enormously expensive.

Same with skin care, a complete farce.

savehannah · 04/04/2022 14:09

I bought Boots curl creme after reading about it on here. It made my curls look nice but it felt horrible, my hair felt sticky and tangled later in the day. I find products either make my hair feel lovely (leave in conditioner etc) but it looks frizzy, or it looks nice and non frizzy but feels gross.

Frenziedandfurious · 04/04/2022 15:53

I use a range called twisted sista that's ok, not amazing but ok. The leave in conditioner spray is pretty good with fine frizzy hair. Anything else it just looks manky and stringy as serum, gel and cream is too heavy for it. Also good as a refresh between washes. I can't be bothered with curly girl, tried for a bit but my hair was greasy with massively itchy scalp. Also way too complicated!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 04/04/2022 15:55

You say you have tried Opalex, did you try Opalex 3 on its on with your normal shampoo and conditioner?

YoureBreakingMyHeartCecilia · 04/04/2022 16:25

Mrs Pelligrino, yep I do use Olaplex 3 (it only helps if I use it in combination with 0) and I notice an improvement when I do.
Still bad frizz though…
The olaplex shampoo and conditioner seemed to make frizz worse rather than better Sad
Is the Olaplex oil any good?
