Plus size models, no bra- what’s going on?!

TheIsaacs · 03/04/2022 12:45

I’ve been looking for a dress for my sisters wedding over the last couple of days. I’m plus size myself and want something flowy with a nice neckline and sleeves.

I’ve noticed this weird trend on asos and H&M of some of the plus size models seemingly not wearing a bra. Has anyone else noticed this? What the hell is it about? It ruins the line of the dresses and makes them look baggy. There’s one in particular that I think if you put a bra on and actually lifted your boobs, the neckline would come under the bra!

I can’t buy the dresses and not wear a bra so it put it’s me off buying them massively. Am I the only one who can’t see why they would do this?

Maybe they are just trying to
challenge the convention we have that all boobs should be tiny & pert?

Good on them! 👍👍👍

SpringHasSprungYay · 03/04/2022 20:23

They are just showing how lots if people really look. We've all been conditioned by the fashion body nazis to be outraged by looking at bigger people. It's fine.
They will be ok honest.
Some women won't shave their legs or armpits either you know? The world won't stop turning.

SpringHasSprungYay · 03/04/2022 20:25

@DogsAndGin

I don’t think it is ‘unflattering’ at all to show the real shape of breasts without hoisting them up to unnatural positions. Boobs are not there to be pleasing for small-minded western men to look at. Many women have similar shaped breasts to these models, which they are made to feel are disgusting and abnormal when not covered or lifted. These models have normal female bodies and don't deserve to be criticised or altered.

Imagine how many women have read your post, and thought, ‘oh, just when I thought plus size bodies were starting to become acceptable, I now have to hate my boobs.’

My god, we used to only have size 6 models, now we’ve got more variety, but their boobs aren’t perky enough for your liking?!

You haven’t complained that Kate Moss and co are braless in every single catwalk show. Or the likes of Monika and Rachel with their nipples poking you in the eye every episode.

And to all the ladies who have breasts like the lady on the ASOS advert, or like Lizzo, more power to you!

This! 100% ☺️
Lineofconcepcion · 03/04/2022 20:28

How are you managing when doing sports without a bra? I ride and I can't imagine doing a sitting trot without a bra on, i did try it once and it hurt!

JenniferAlisonPhilipaSue · 03/04/2022 20:54

This isn't a new thing

When I was heavier, I noticed a lot of plus size bloggers I followed did not seem to wear bras.

Not only that, they seemed to wear outfits that were clearly too small for them.

I did wonder if they were intending to emphasise that they were fat and therefore 'body positive' but all it did was make me feel embarrassed for them and motivated to lose weight.

I avoid following fashion bloggers at all now.

MakingShiteMemories · 03/04/2022 20:56

@hellosunshineagainx I would have thought D was very ample - but when your starting point is zero, anything seems huge. I'm highly envious, btw.

@SpringHasSprungYay I'm a bit baffled by your comment. I have tiny, pert boobs despite having had children and now being in menopause, and have never, ever thought they were anything that anyone would ever wish to have. My understanding of 'convention' is that women are regarded as a bit weird/lacking/unsexy if they are build like the proverbial ironing board. Confused

Oh sod off. Did you not see my posts saying I am plus size with huge boobs? I’m a size 22, 5’4” with 42GG breasts and they’re definitely heading south with age. My boobs Look very much like the models when I don’t wear a bra.

I’m not questioning how dare a woman not wear a bra, I haven’t said that anywhere! Body positivity doesn’t only come in the form of not wearing a bra for goodness sake. What about those of us who want to wear a bra so we don’t have accidental nipple slips at a wedding? Is there something wrong with wanting dresses to be showed at their best on a website that’s supposed to be selling them to me?

Also i’m not trying to buy the clothes being modelled by Kate moss (does she actually model anymore anyway?) I’m thrilled women with my body type are modelling. But it would be nice to see the clothes represented in a slightly more realistic way, but as I asked much much earlier in the thread- are teens and early 20’s women dressing that way? Is that why it’s being modelled like that?

And so the patriarchy keeps us all feeling self conscious and that our bodies are somehow not "perfect"
🤷🏻‍♀️

SleepingStandingUp · 03/04/2022 21:08

@hellosunshineagainx

Wow some of the comments in this thread, I don't know why we worry about men so much when women are so awful to each other. Why cant an overweight woman not wear a bra, why does it impact your day so much how someone looks. Sagging etc is mostly genetic and wearing a bra does not affect it. Ive had kids and don't wear a bra and my boobs are the same, one friend wears a bra and has had one child and they're saggy. It's genetics mostly. Also we are supposed to sag as we get older its the ageing process
They're selling clothes. At least do different shots in and out of a bra so I can see if it'll fit when my breasts are up not down
Zazdar · 03/04/2022 21:09

A fat person with B cup breasts can easily go braless whereas a skinny person with F cup breasts not so much.

I’m a “skinny” person with a double letter cup size. Because of the weird way bra sizing works, I can easily go braless (and often do) because my boobs aren’t that actually big. They would be an A or B cup on a larger lady.

RampantIvy · 03/04/2022 21:16

I think I would rather the braless look from a comfort standpoint than the scratchy toture device of the wonder bra I squeezed my poor boobs into so tight and hefting they almost touched my chin, that was all the rage when I was a late teen.

There is a middle way.

Maybe I have been "conditioned", but I just don't find the saggy braless look flattering, and it looks very uncomfortable, especially in hot weather.

Being of a fried egg build I wear a bra so that I don't look like a boy Sad

KimikosNightmare · 03/04/2022 21:20
@KimikosNightmare I suggest you’re the one who pops over to the feminist board
I frequently post there.
**@EraOfTheGrey* @hellosunshineagainx* thank god there are some nice people on this thread! Flowers
Kind of you to say so Smile. I'm with you about not being ashamed about our breasts - I don't understand all the buttock clenching about seeing real woman's bodies.

It's Style and Beauty. That look is as stylish and beautiful as "builder's bum" bum crack.
What isn't beautiful about the female form?

EraOfTheGrey · 03/04/2022 21:29

@KimikosNightmare It's a weird thing to liken cleavage to builders bum.

Bagelsandbrie · 03/04/2022 21:31

Dd is 19 and none of her friends wear bras. They’re all sorts of shapes and sizes (big, small, everything in between) and bras just aren’t a thing anymore. They wear everything hanging out, nipples showing, dangling around. It just what they do.

jeremyjamjam · 03/04/2022 22:24

@Greyhare

I'm guessing all the people saying it's uncomfortable going braless is because you have been wearing a conventional underwired bra since your teens so letting them hang loose does feel strange but if we had never had them hoisted up and held in place then going braless wouldn't feel strange or uncomfortable because it would be the norm which if the yoof of today are wearing soft bras and crop tops.

I think I would rather the braless look from a comfort standpoint than the scratchy toture device of the wonder bra I squeezed my poor boobs into so tight and hefting they almost touched my chin, that was all the rage when I was a late teen.

No it's because when I move around at any kind of speed it hurts! I'm fine mooching around at home without a bra on. But if I'm outside walking quickly or having fun dancing or such like my boobs need support. And I'm a 32D so pretty small compared to a plus sized model. Plus nipple chafing is not pleasant at all.
peachgreen · 03/04/2022 22:30

I'm guessing they're dresses designed to be worn without a bra (as is the fashion at the moment) so therefore they're shown on a model not wearing a bra. Like you say, they wouldn't really work with a bra in many cases.

LouisRenault · 03/04/2022 22:56

But the middle one especially doesn't work without a bra. If the model moved about, she would be falling out of it. Though I'm not sure how much is the style, and how much is the dress just not fitting her well.

tolerable · 03/04/2022 23:03

i dunno it ruins the dress line,it just looks scuzzy but maybe cos even if plus size the models clearly arent filling the boob part..adequately. totally agree-it does nothing for the dress.
realistically none of them would prevent a bra i think with a well supported, cleavage enhancing type bra they would look much better.
its always a choice.

Not shaving my legs doesn't stop me running for the bus. Not wearing a bra does.
StarlightLady · 04/04/2022 06:28

I agree that the dresses shown are the type of dresses that would often be worn without a bra.

I’m a 36F and wear a bra most of the time, but l go braless in the very hot weather, apart from at work. I don’t find well fitting bras uncomfortable, far from it, but by their very nature they can be sweaty when it’s warm and that is when l allow the girls to go free range.

Likewise, most women wear a bra most of the time. But there are a sufficient number who do not for some marketing images to be depicted sans bra. It is to demonstrate what something would look like worn braless. The choice is yours.

Fizbosshoes · 04/04/2022 09:10

I would go bra-less if i thought a dress or top can provide adequate cover. Some things look a lot better without a bra anyway. I have a high neck halter top with no back that feels fine without a bra....but even with very small boobs I wouldn't feel comfortable with something that would gape, or be liable for exposing my boobs if I bent down or leaned over. And I think all the dresses would do, that regardless of boob size. And I don't think they are close enough fitting for tit tape to be of assistance!
Going bra-less under a blouse, tshirt or jumper is different because there is less chance of boob escape.

CoralPaperweight · 04/04/2022 10:47

IMO having looked at the photos the reason models aren't wearing bras is because the dresses are extremely low cut and your bra would be on show and it would look odd with that particular dress shape. Also easier to buy plunge bras that would work with these dresses if you are anything over a D cup (IME)

CoralPaperweight · 04/04/2022 10:47

Aren't over a D cup - that should read
