Plus size models, no bra- what’s going on?!

I’ve been looking for a dress for my sisters wedding over the last couple of days. I’m plus size myself and want something flowy with a nice neckline and sleeves.

I’ve noticed this weird trend on asos and H&M of some of the plus size models seemingly not wearing a bra. Has anyone else noticed this? What the hell is it about? It ruins the line of the dresses and makes them look baggy. There’s one in particular that I think if you put a bra on and actually lifted your boobs, the neckline would come under the bra!

I can’t buy the dresses and not wear a bra so it put it’s me off buying them massively. Am I the only one who can’t see why they would do this?

Those dresses look cheap and horrible. Personally not wearing a bra anything above a d cup feels physically really uncomfortable. And also doesnt look nice. But if some people want to let it all hang out anyway then go for it. Each to their own.

perimenofertility · 03/04/2022 15:56

Those are all weirdly unflattering images!
I am also plus size, gave up wearing a bra at the beginning of lockdown and feel so much more comfortable without one. I manage to find clothes that suit me and look nice (not like those ones you linked to!)
Have a look at the Evans website. I bought a couple of dresses from them recently for upcoming wedding/parties.

Neverreturntoathread · 03/04/2022 15:59

I just spent two hours altering a dress (lifting it up at shoulders) from asos so that the low point of the v didn’t come below my nipples. It’s very strange.

Makeitsoso · 03/04/2022 16:01

Not wearing a bra is a thing amongst younger gen Z women/girls in general, so probably just part of that general trend.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 03/04/2022 16:06

I read lots of posts here about bras being uncomfortable but I like mine. I like to prop them up a bit but then I’m a 1990s/2000 woman so maybe it’s a generation thing. I’ve never got home and removed my bra for comfort… except my lovely red one where the wire came through and stabbed me last week.

@hellosunshineagainx

Wow some of the comments in this thread, I don't know why we worry about men so much when women are so awful to each other. Why cant an overweight woman not wear a bra, why does it impact your day so much how someone looks. Sagging etc is mostly genetic and wearing a bra does not affect it. Ive had kids and don't wear a bra and my boobs are the same, one friend wears a bra and has had one child and they're saggy. It's genetics mostly. Also we are supposed to sag as we get older its the ageing process
I didn’t start the thread to complain about overweight women or their choice not to wear a bra. However, some of the styles of dresses really don’t lend themselves to going bra-less and it affects my day because I’m plus size with massive boobs and looking for a dress that flatters my figure for a wedding. The styles I’ve linked to are dresses I like, except the necklines don’t look good when there’s a lack of bra and an opportunity for my boobs to pop out Willy nilly in front of the family elders. I’m mostly baffled about the design and styling choices being made and wondered if it’s because some younger people are choosing to forego bras.

As for the sagging as we age, yep mine are around my waist these days, it doesn’t mean any of the designs I’ve linked will flatter me just because the models aren’t wearing bras.

Holy hell, so many of the responses here are dripping with misogyny

elbea · 03/04/2022 16:24

I’m glad that young people are choosing not to wear bras if they don’t want to. Who cares if you have saggy (I.e totally normal) boobs. They should dress for themselves and not for what you think is okay.

If you have a problem with them - they probably aren’t aimed or designed for you.

It's Style and Beauty. That look is as stylish and beautiful as "builder's bum" bum crack.

You can always pop over to the Feminist Boards.

Me neither. If a bra isn't comfortable, it's the wrong size.
Fizbosshoes · 03/04/2022 16:32

I've got fried egg boobs and sometimes don't bother with a bra. However I don't necessarily want my boobs to escape or be inadvertently on show whenever I bend down, or lean over the table to reach my wine. (Which I think there would be a risk of, with those style of dress)

Cotswoldmama · 03/04/2022 16:39

That dress is terrible for all sizes my tiny boobs and probably belly button would be showing in that first dress!

Crunched · 03/04/2022 16:49

I think fashion shoots are often designed to just show things as they are, boob size/dress size immaterial.
I may think this dress looks more flattering with an uplifted breast, you may not. We will each wear it our own way.

Plus size models, no bra- what’s going on?!
HopefulProcrastinator · 03/04/2022 17:06

I'm honestly amazed that larger ladies are remotely comfortable without a good supportive bra.

Not at all bothered about the shape/silhouette because that is sexist nonsense, but something that makes the day go past without discomfort is a must for me.

Timeturnerplease · 03/04/2022 17:09

Crikey I am clearly nowhere near young anymore. I’m 35, size 14/16 (15 would be perfect!) and have had two children. My boobs are only a C but if I didn’t wear a bra it would be glaringly obvious that my nipples and bellybutton can almost touch.

I don’t feel like anyone needs to see that.

mudgetastic · 03/04/2022 17:18

That is just social convention though isn't it? Why should people object really?

Gonnagetgoing · 03/04/2022 17:18

I can see why the retailers are doing it but to be honest it does the models no favours and also any of my friends who are larger busted always wear a bra when out, at home they don’t (or do).

Luredbyapomegranate · 03/04/2022 17:25

It’s a body acceptance thing I guess.

But deffo a danger of fall out with the second oneGrin

It’s a fashion though and will pass, and I don’t think anyone over 25 is wearing them like this,

Saying that ones boobs are ones own business and if people don’t want to hoik, they don’t.

Georgyporky · 03/04/2022 17:37

"I know they’re uncomfortable"

They're not if you wear the right size & style.
M&S have an excellent bra-fitting service

Laiste · 03/04/2022 17:41

I have quite big boobs and if i don't hoik them up under clothes it looks as if i'm barrel shaped (bust/ribcage/waist all one sort of blob). I don't like the way i look in anything which falls from above the bust or empire line clothes as again they add pounds. Stones in fact! I have a waist - i like it to look that way.

How we like to look, how much and why we care, is very personal and, in my case, doesn't mean i think or feel a specific way about anyone else because of how they look.

mudgetastic · 03/04/2022 17:43

Clearly sone people can find bras that are comfortable

I am prepared to accept this is true for you

Please accept that it isn't universally true no matter where you go for fitting

LadyHenryofRawlinsonEnd · 03/04/2022 17:45
@LadyHenryofRawlinsonEnd agree with you about clothes quality and thinness, though nothing to do in my opinion about whether or not you choose to wear a bra.
I see now, I hadn't read the thread closely, just noticed the bloody awful designs.

I am rather lazy in the bra dept. and only buy my own from primark Grin
I do find most bra's to be uncomfortable, but I am really weird about stuff that sticks to my skin.

trailrunner85 · 03/04/2022 17:54

I don't wear a bra to "look" better, but because if I don't, I can't even walk down the stairs, let alone out of the house to get on with my day, without it being really uncomfortable.
I'm thin and don't have massive boobs, but they are saggy post-breastfeeding. I guess I don't understand how people with much bigger boobs can go braless - presumably they too are uncomfortable, with bouncing around, backache, etc..?!

SorrelForbes · 03/04/2022 17:54

No, M&S are the worst place to go for a bra fitting. Totally diabolical!
