Edinburgh in the cold and rain…

…and maybe snow, who knows! Grin

Me and DH are going to Edinburgh at the end of next week and DH has booked a table at a nice restaurant on Saturday night to celebrate our wedding anniversary.

I’m having a bit of a dilemma over what to wear. At the moment all my black jeans are skinnies (ok for trudging around in the day but maybe not for the eve?) and all my straighter jeans are a light wash, which is more summery. What do people wear out in nice restaurants these days when the weather is awful? I have two pairs of heeled boots, one cream and one black but they won’t look very dressy with light jeans and will expose too much bare leg with my midi dresses.

I would default to flat knee high black boots, leggings and an oversized shirt usually in this situation but we are flying and need to take minimal luggage.

I’m tempted to wear leather trainers but not sure that’s smart enough for the more fancy restaurants.

What would you wear?

I should say I’m generally a casual dresser and even for meals out around here I usually wear stuff like the attached photos (I live on SW coast and it’s generally more casual) I just want to make a bit of an effort Blush

Which restaurant are you going to? My go to would probably be a knee length dress, dark tights and flat ankle boots. I also think dark jeans, a nice top with trainers would be absolutely fine.

SheWoreYellow · 02/04/2022 11:42

Edinburgh’s not super dressy. How smart a restaurant is it?

I go out in just jeans and a nice top and it’s fine.

SheWoreYellow · 02/04/2022 11:44

Anything in your photos would be fine.

toomanytwinkies · 02/04/2022 11:44

Ah ok thanks, I didn’t know the vibe! Worried we’ll won’t be allowed in if I’m wearing my white Adidas Superstars Grin

It’s the Witchery.

Black jeans are fine. No one will see them once you’re sitting down anyway. Smile

ApolloandDaphne · 02/04/2022 11:48

I've been to the Witchery for lunch in sightseeing jeans and trainers. It is quite relaxed.

SheWoreYellow · 02/04/2022 11:48

Ah, the Witchery is quite smart though! Oh I don’t know.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 02/04/2022 11:48

You’ll be fine at the Witchery in anything like those attached pics. (I live in Edinburgh.)

My recommendation would be: layers. The whole ‘four seasons in one day’ thing is a cliche of sorts but it does also genuinely happen here. We’ve had snow, sleet, icy wind and brilliant sunshine this week — sometimes all at once.

Have a great time!

Pearlyqueen21 · 02/04/2022 11:49

One thing I would check is where the restaurant and/or hotel are. Is it an area with cobbles? Steep hills or steps? Plenty of those in Edinburgh, so your suggestion of leather trainers sounds sensible. Your ankle boots might go unused all weekend, depending on comfort. I would concentrate on warmth/comfort for feet and legs, with a smarter top for the evening and a statement bag/scarf. I speak as a resident of the Central Belt, currently disgruntled by our freezing cold weather Grin

Ahh good to know thanks, I might take my black DMs … might be good if we need to navigate a lot of cobbles as @Pearlyqueen21 has said Grin I can dress up the top half a bit then.

If you decide to go with a minidress can i suggest thick woollen tights? It's Baltic up here just now.

Edinburgh is a lot less dressy than Glasgow so you should be fine, even though the witchery on a weekend evening is probably a wee bit smarter than when I've pitched up in jeans and a linen shirt for midweek lunch.

Teens and husband refuse to wear anything other than smart jeans to go out and we've never been turned away for being too scruffy.

Enjoy your weekend. Bring a raincoat - umbrellas are useless in the wind

The Witchery is so dark, no one will be able to see what you're wearing. Look, we're not some weird hinterland, next stop the North Pole. Wear what you would normally wear going for a meal.

😳 sorry I’ve seen reports of snow and cold weather, just wanted to check.

It'll likely be the same throughout the country. We seem to have had milder winter weather, less or no snow than in eg the Midlands in the last few years. Check the forecast and maybe bring a warm coat or jacket. Otherwise, I think restaurant dress codes will be much of a muchness.

Kiitos · 02/04/2022 15:09

You will be fine in whatever at the Witchery. It’s nice to dress up to go there but when I went there were people in jeans, hoodies and trainers in the evening.

AnastasiaRomanov · 02/04/2022 15:16

Edinburgh isn’t very dressy. You’ll be fine in jeans.

Everydaydayisaschoolday · 02/04/2022 15:22

A nice dress and smart white trainers will take you anywhere these days. I've been to a Michelin starred restaurant in that very combo and looked completely appropriate.

They vary a bit by city - eg Glasgow people are much more dressed up than Edinburgh IME.
midsomermurderess · 02/04/2022 17:45

It's just going out for a meal. Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, what does it matter? How have people lost sense of what to wear? A day or so ago, someone needed advice for a 3-day UK break, someone in the north of Scotland going shopping Glasgow: what should I wear??? It's getting silly.

Er, yes. For example I've been in Cambridge and London but not Oxford, I've been in Belfast and Dublin but not Cardiff, York but not Nottingham, Amsterdam but not The Hague. It wouldn't occur to me that I need to ask what to wear to the cities I've not visited.

It's getting silly Or maybe people just like talking about clothes? Who'd've thunk it?

I'd wear a mini dress, tights and ankle boots - and a good coat. White trainers no good, as it's too cold for bare legs.

I love talking about clothes but this is silly.

I haven't had a fish supper in Anstruther for a while. Might pop over there tomorrow. If it's after 7pm should I be in formal eveningwear?
KELLOGSspeck · 03/04/2022 04:55

The last picture on the right if you wear trousers like that and the ankle boots. Swop the cardi though for a much more evening top like a nice blouse and I think that will look lovely.
