Edinburgh in the cold and rain…

…and maybe snow, who knows! Grin

Me and DH are going to Edinburgh at the end of next week and DH has booked a table at a nice restaurant on Saturday night to celebrate our wedding anniversary.

I’m having a bit of a dilemma over what to wear. At the moment all my black jeans are skinnies (ok for trudging around in the day but maybe not for the eve?) and all my straighter jeans are a light wash, which is more summery. What do people wear out in nice restaurants these days when the weather is awful? I have two pairs of heeled boots, one cream and one black but they won’t look very dressy with light jeans and will expose too much bare leg with my midi dresses.

I would default to flat knee high black boots, leggings and an oversized shirt usually in this situation but we are flying and need to take minimal luggage.

I’m tempted to wear leather trainers but not sure that’s smart enough for the more fancy restaurants.

What would you wear?

I think it does vary from city to city though. I know Edinburgh well and it’s definitely more casual than my home city. In my experience, touristy cities are always a lot more casual than non-touristy cities, I guess because a lot of visitors won’t have evening wear with them.
I had a nice meal out in Edinburgh recently wearing a dress and white trainers, as a previous poster suggested. It meant I didn’t need to take any other shoes with me.

I live in Edinburgh. I've lived (breifly) in Glasgow. What one wears to go to a restaurant is no different from anywhere else in the western world- dress up if you want to- don't if you don't.

Except The Ritz in London which has a no jeans policy.

@KELLOGSspeck

The last picture on the right if you wear trousers like that and the ankle boots. Swop the cardi though for a much more evening top like a nice blouse and I think that will look lovely.
All of those outfits would be perfectly fine as they are anywhere other than somewhere like The Ritz which does actually have a dress code.

@KimikosNightmare

It's getting silly Or maybe people just like talking about clothes? Who'd've thunk it?

I love talking about clothes but this is silly.

Are you the S&B thread police?
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/04/2022 16:38

I just can't understand WHY people think it's silly. The OP is going away and going somewhere nice to eat. She wants to be weather and venue appropriate and doesn't want to have to pack too many things. Eminently sensible.

I’m not far from Edinburgh at the moment, camper van trip, & it’s bitterly cold overnight so wear something warm if you’re walking to & from the restaurant . We’ve had snow, hail, sleet, freezing winds & bright sunshine all in the space of three days. Whatever you decide to wear in the restaurant, never been the the Witchery, doubt they’d let in my four dogs Grin but I’d definitely wear a warm scarf & something on your head, preferably thick & woolly.

@onceiwasanorangatan the same poster is always on threads criticising the questions asked. She does think she is the thread police.
