I have horrible skin. Combination. Right now I have spots on my chin and a dry forehead. You get the picture! It is also sensitive. I have just started using hylaronic acid so I need an spf for the morning but I can’t layer too many products! It needs to be a moisturiser with SPF in it BUT must be fine under make up and not pill up! HELP!!

Hyaluronic acid isn't an acid as such, it's just a moisturizer so doesn't mean you need an SPF because of it.
You do need an SPF though, everyone does, but it should be separate to your moisturizer. We don't put enough moisturizer or foundation on.
Biore watery essence SPF50 is good, the Garnier/Ambre Solaire ones specially for the face aren't bad.

PAFMO · 31/03/2022 06:24

PS make sure you use HA on damp skin or it will dry skin out instead of hydrating.

WrinklesShminkles · 31/03/2022 13:00

I have combination skin and liked Nivea's Luminous630 SPF50 moisturiser. Make sure you buy when on offer as the RRP is just silly!

I do wish people would stop trying to convince posters who specifically ask for SPF moisturiser recommendations and explain why they don't want to use a full on SPF, that they "must" use the latter. It's a free country, allegedly.

GettingStuffed · 31/03/2022 13:07

I use one from no7 it's called something like daily protection it's in a tall thin bottle. I'm travelling atm and my bottle is at home, I alternate it with no7 day cream.

littlegingerone · 31/03/2022 13:11

I use no7 spf50 with protect and perfect I love it and have been using it for years. I use HA in the morning too, but I use a layer of non spf moisturiser between that and the no7 spf

Probably because using a moisturiser with an SPF added ,is a total waste of money & does nothing to protect the skin. If you have knowledge on a subject, l think it’s fairer to pass that on actually.

I didn't say "must". But it is dermatologist's advice. Who know more about skin and skin cancer and how we don't put nearly enough moisturizer on (especially if we have oily skin) as we do sunscreen when we apply it separately.
nicknamehelp · 31/03/2022 13:29

Body Shop do an spf 50 one and it still feels really light and is absolutely fine under makeup. Daughter wore it all last year as a medication she was on made her very sensitive to even weak sunlight and it kept any redness on her controlled.

yellowsuninthesky · 31/03/2022 16:17

I use Liz Earle's moisturiser with SPF or Superdrug's vitamin E range or Origins Ginzing.

Ideally you use a separate SPF especially if you are going to be outside for any length of time, but you also need to reapply it during the day - and in the real world - well, does anyone actually go to the loo at lunchtime, take all their make-up off, reapply their SPF and then their make-up? If people do, then fair enough. I don't though!

JinglingHellsBells · 31/03/2022 16:54

Can I join in @WrinklesShminkles? :)

The way that moisturiser combined with sun block doesn't work is twofold.

1 it's too dilute
2 it's not enough quantity

The amount of moisturiser most people use on their face is about the size of a 5p or 20p I guess. This is less than is suggested as sun block (alone) for the face. (more like a 1p coin or a 50p piece.)

And think about it- your moisturiser at best is 50-50 cream and sun screen.

So the actual quantity of sun screen is going to be very low.

To get real sun protection you need a pretty generous blob of sunscreen (and not diluted with moisturiser.)

‘It's a free country, allegedly’

Yes. And sun related skin ageing and cancer are real. SPF moisturiser isn’t adequate so people are trying to help. Hope that’s ok.

OP you want an SPF spray. The Garnier over make up spray is very good and contains hyularonic acid. Re apply throughout the day.

JinglingHellsBells · 31/03/2022 17:14

There is also a new LRP sunscreen out which was in the press last week. Small bottle and contains new 'stuff' that is innovative re sun block.

Anthelios UVMune 400 Invisible Fluid SPF50+ Sun Cream 50ML

FloralsForSpring · 31/03/2022 17:48

Chantecaille do a nice tinted moisturiser but it's only spf15 and comes in a very odd shade range. I use it as a sort of primer

Omg this spray sounds amazing ignore my previous suggestion

Ooh I used this when I was on isotretion. Thanks for reminding me I might stock up.
PAFMO · 31/03/2022 18:48

I've tried the Garnier spray- it's pretty good when you're on the move.

Ive been using neutrogena dry touch factor 100 for years, first found it in Singapore.

Recently went to see a dermatologist for anti ageing tips and she said it had recently come out top in a blind test research paper. Make up goes on great afterwards too.

Thanks every one! I very rarely sit in the sun. If I do that I wear sp50 by ultra sun as it doesn’t set my skin off. There is spf in my foundation (yes I know it wears off) which is why I was looking for a moisturiser with SPF? But I hear the valid points.

So I wash my face with salicylic acid wash from the solution… is it then ok to us hylaronic acid? Then I put on top weleda skin food at the momen as it is dry (before starting the acid). Is this ok?? Anything else I should be doing instead? I didn’t use the acid this morning, is it ok to use twice a day on sensitive skin? I also use nip and dab glycolic acid pads a couple of times a week…: is this over kill??

OP posts:
Lookingoutside · 31/03/2022 19:37

That sounds pretty good to me OP but it may be that switching a couple of things helps your skin to feel more comfortable. A previous poster suggested that you apply your HA to damp skin and that is definitely a good idea.

Are you sure you need Weleda skin food? It’s a great product but is very concentrated. It may be that your skin is de hydrated rather than dry. Do you mean your skin feels tight before your HA? It may be that you don’t need to wash with salicylic acid and an oil to milk rinse off formula would be better.

All you need is to cleanse, treat and protect. So cleanser, serum, moisturiser and SPF. The treatment/serum is what will make the difference. HA is great for daytime but consider replacing it with a retinol treatment at night. Skin&Me and Dermatica are both good.

Your Nip & Fab pads aren’t necessarily overkill but if you do try retinol at night, switch back to HA for the couple of nights that you want to use them.

Embark · 31/03/2022 20:26

@Lookingoutside I meant my skin has been really dry for some reason for the last few weeks, this has not been caused by anything new so I’m not sure why.

I use boots botanical eye make up remover to make off all my make up (only thing that doesn’t set my eczema off on my eyes) then I wash with the salicylic wash and then I have just been using the weleda lately due to my forehead being dry. Now I have added in HA (tonight on damp skin!) but I don’t know what to do in the morning … really struggle with a moisturiser to wear under my make up….

I’m not sure I get what you mean about the nip and fab pads? I don’t use retinol, I tried before and it set my skin off.. that’s why I’m trying the HA?

kitkatcrunch · 31/03/2022 20:32

I find salicylic acid face wash too much and drying on my combo skin.

I would use a gentle face wash, then hyaluronic acid on damp skin.
Then spritz a mist over that. (It feels a bit damp, but think of the HA like a sponge - it will draw moisture to it, so if you aren't layering moisture around it, it kind of draws it from your skin.)
Moisturiser
SPF - Body shop, Ultra Violette screen queen, La Roche Posay anthelios 50 are some of my faves.

If you're using acids, I would def be using spf 50.

At night you can do the same again, only this time cleanse twice to get rid of all the spf and makeup, then you can maybe add a topical acid like salicylic, or your nip & fab pads after your face wash. (My skin prefers lactic acid, gentler and less drying.)

longtompot · 31/03/2022 21:47

I now use L'Oréal Revitalift day cream with spf30 after years of using Nivea Q10 with spf. As I don't use hyularonic acid so I don't know how it would react. I do find it helps my skin as otherwise I get tiny bumps all over my face if I go without any spf. I didn't realise that face cream had such little spf but it makes sense, especially considering the amount you use. The spray sounds interesting so I shall look into that.

Nightwithhertrainofstars · 31/03/2022 21:53

I often just use Nivea Q10 day moisturizer with SPF 30. Obviously it's fairly basic but it has a really nice texture and works really well under make-up. I've got quite dry and sensitive skin and I've always got on very well with it.

woodhill · 31/03/2022 21:56

I use the Emma Hardie primer SPF over my moisturiser

I do sometimes use Boots NO7

TheRussianDoll · 31/03/2022 22:48

Clinique City Block spf 40. Used it for years and at 59, have decent skin.
