I have horrible skin. Combination. Right now I have spots on my chin and a dry forehead. You get the picture! It is also sensitive. I have just started using hylaronic acid so I need an spf for the morning but I can’t layer too many products! It needs to be a moisturiser with SPF in it BUT must be fine under make up and not pill up! HELP!!

@Embark

Thanks every one! I very rarely sit in the sun. If I do that I wear sp50 by ultra sun as it doesn’t set my skin off. There is spf in my foundation (yes I know it wears off) which is why I was looking for a moisturiser with SPF? But I hear the valid points.

So I wash my face with salicylic acid wash from the solution… is it then ok to us hylaronic acid? Then I put on top weleda skin food at the momen as it is dry (before starting the acid). Is this ok?? Anything else I should be doing instead? I didn’t use the acid this morning, is it ok to use twice a day on sensitive skin? I also use nip and dab glycolic acid pads a couple of times a week…: is this over kill??

You can use hyaluronic acid with everything - it's not an acid as such, it's just a lovely humectant. Some people find that after HA they don't need a moisturizer as the HA itself is enough. You can use it twice a day in both morning and evening routine with no problem. You need to use it on damp skin for it to work its magic so it should be next step after cleansing.

Salicylic products are great for blemish prone, they penetrate further into the skin to lift out impurities (non technical explanation) Glycolic products are more for dry and ageing skin and act more on a surface level to brighten by chemical exfoliation (essentially both salicylic products and glycolic (BHAs and AHAs respectively) have eliminated the need for those gritty scrubs we used to use)

If your skin has only recently started playing up it could be the double whammy of both salicylic and glycolic even if on different days. Which ones are they? Is there anything else in the ingredients which might be irritating your skin? (My DD used a Dermalogica product for blemishes which made her skin react terribly- looking at it it had ginger oil in it, which was probably the irritant, rather than the salicylic)

@PAFMO thanks. My skin has always been like this, I current reaction to anything, my forehead has been very dry the last month but I haven’t changed anything other than adding the weleda as that has really helped it, I don’t usually use that on my face, just my hands.

I’m not really sure what I am doing to be honest. I don’t like the ordinary, I went in and spoke with someone but I don’t like that stuff for some reason.

I do get spots, hence the combination skin. Mainly around my chin which I believe is down to hormones. My skin was awful when I was younger and I did have a course of roaccutane many moons ago!

@soberfabulous can I be cheeky and ask where you buy the Neutrogena dry touch from if you’re in the UK? It looks great.

soberfabulous · 01/04/2022 07:45

i'm actually overseas but i've bought it many times before from amazon when i've come home. i see lots on there:

www.amazon.co.uk/Neutrogena-Ultra-Sheer-Spectrum-Sunscreen/dp/B005IHT94S/ref=sr_1_12?crid=1PCXUYWNO2OCR&keywords=neutrogena+dry+touch+sunscreen&sprefix=neutrogena+dry+touch%2Caps%2C180&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1648795448&sr=8-12

This is my dermatologist BTW - she is excellent, straight talking, can't stand caroline hirons and the pressure on women to buy a load of products they don't need. she got me onto high strength retinol that you can buy OTC here where i live and it was a game changer. my face fell off and revealed a new younger one!!

PAFMO · 01/04/2022 09:19

I'm going to look for that Neutrogena as well. I really rate their products.
OP- I don't get on with The Ordinary, and I'm with anyone who says no, we don't need 46 different products. I find all that stuff very emperor's New clothes. They make you think you need 8 cheap products, when you can buy one product for £20 that contains all of it but you save time and bathroom cupboard space.

Uttoxerley · 01/04/2022 09:33

I know Natalia! Used to work with her, she’s brilliant. Send her my anonymous love when you see her next haha x

uggmum · 01/04/2022 13:51

I use the origins ginseng one. It is spf 40.
It's a tinted moisturiser (I use their normal one first then apply the tinted one).

Since I started using it I don't use foundation anymore. I really like the coverage. I use a bit of powder on top and blusher.

I have also just bought a Nuxe one that is spf 50. Mainly for holiday use. I got it from M&S with 10% off on sparks

Embark · 01/04/2022 17:47

Thanks I’ll have a look. I don’t wear a primer As I have tried a few and my make up never looks any better? Any suggestions for that? Could I wash and then use HA and then jump to a good primer??

OP this might be a stupid question but have you ever tried just using products for dry/sensitive skin? I used to think I had combination skin but once ended up with face wash for sensitive skin instead of my usual combi skin product through a mix up ('buy the one in the green packaging' doesn't necessarily work if you're in a different country!) Lo and behold all my spots cleared up and since then my skin care regime has been based primarily around Simple moisturising range and my skin is so much happier. Just mentioning as the combination of spots and dry skin sounds very familiar and I now know that products like salicylic wash would actually cause the breakouts in my case... (To answer your original question, I was given a tube of the new Simple SPF moisturiser in their range for dull skin - orangey packaging - and I love it)

Embark · 01/04/2022 20:32

@lobsterz not recently no. When I stopped using the salycilicface wash my skin flares up more?

Iv got quite a few new small spots since starting the HA, is that normal or is it clogging my skin anyone??

People probably know this already, but I just wanted to mention that UVA causes aging in while UVB causes sunburn. Both UVA and UVB can cause skin cancer. The SPF number on bottles only refers to UVB. To get the best anti-aging effect, look for a high UVA - this can be difficult as not all products clearly display their UVA protection - I tend to look for four or five stars.

I’m currently using the P20 face sunscreen. It’s SPF 30 and UVA five stars.

5littlechickens · 02/04/2022 09:06

My skin is just like yours. I've found Ultrasun Face to be amazing. I use spf30 but there is a 50. You can quite often get good prices on Amazon. Last week it went down to 13.60

SpringHasSprungYay · 02/04/2022 09:10

I really like La Roche Posay
La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 Invisible Fluid SPF50+ Sun Cream 50ml

Embark · 02/04/2022 14:23

I’m really at a loss to know what products I should be using Sad my only ‘must’ is using the boots botanical eye make up remover as I wear waterproof mascara and it doesn’t set my eczema off.

Is anyone here working in skin care? I like to wash my face morning and evening so I need a wash of some sort. Then I want a moisturiser for the morning that will sit ok with foundations etc on top.

I have combination skin so both dry AND I still get spots but I also want to look at anti aging. My wrinkles are not too bad so would like to help prevent them as best I can too?

OP posts:
PAFMO · 02/04/2022 14:35

I'd say to continue with the salicylic face wash but try a gentle moisturizer like La Roche Posay Toleriane (for sensitive skin) or a CeraVe one.

You could introduce a vitamin C in the morning and a retinol at night for anti-ageing. But sort the damaged skin mantle out first.

Hyaluronic acid is just a good hydrator (on damp skin) so shouldn't be causing extra breakouts. What brand is it?

It is true however as pp says, that blemish prone skin still needs to be adequately moisturized, and if you don't do it, then the skin will produce more oil to do it itself and you've a vicious circle.

Embark · 02/04/2022 14:53

@PAFMO it’s a revolution HA. My forehead was ok yesterday, today I have dry flakes showing though my foundation Hmm BUT I didn’t use the weleda skin food this morning….so HA is not a ‘must’ then for combination skin or wrinkles? What is then?

I swear by CeraVe

Embark · 02/04/2022 21:30

I definitely have more spots now since using HA! Is this usual? Or should I stop!?

@MobLife which one do you use?

Thank you for starting this thread @Embark as I wouldn't know to put on HA on damp skin. I have been doing it for the past two days and my skin is already feeling nicer. It really does soak in all the water! Also I can confirm my moisturiser (L'Oréal revitalift) doesn't pill at all.

lobsterz · 04/04/2022 11:18

I'm no expert but in terms of what's working for me - as well as the Simple moisturising face wash and their triple protect SPF moisturiser in the day, I'm currently using the Aldi Q10 range (serum and night cream) at night. Unlike lots of products with more 'stuff' in them, they don't make me break out (the Aldi caviar cream did) so I'm hoping I'm getting whatever anti-aging products I need in there. My one fancy product is the Pixi Rose tonic, morning and evening, honestly don't know if it does anything but it smells nice! May well be that you need more to control spots than I did, but as someone with sensitive skin that is prone to drying, who used to get a lot of breakouts, this is what is currently working for me (also I tried Vitamin C for a while and it just left me very red so I avoid acids)

lobsterz · 04/04/2022 11:19

(should say, I avoid acid exfoliants, I assume HA might well be fine but have never tried it)

Seniorandjunior · 04/04/2022 12:04

Do you need to use a moisturiser? I generally just use SPF. There's a couple of fairly cheap ones I've come across lately, they all seem good to me. Currently I'm using Frezyderm, but my oiliness has settled (secondary to oral medication), I wasn't able to use it when I was very oily.

Nivea mattifying

Garnier

Another Garnier one with the lovely ingredient glycerin, which might help your dry areas.

I'm also in the 'you need a stand-alone SPF camp.

PAFMO · 04/04/2022 14:40

HA isn't an exfoliant, it's just a moisturizer really. The "acid" is a bit of a misnomer though it is an acid, but a humectant one.
