What to wear on weekend away in Scotland

We are going away in next weekend and as I have spent the last two years rugby tackling sheep I don't have any idea what to wear!

Saturday we will be in a town centre - so I ordered black/blue jeans, a white top and a coral blazer with white fairfax trainers? Is this ok?

Sunday is Mother's Day so a walk, Sunday lunch and possibly Segway thing. What do I wear for that?

If you have any links or ideas I would love to see them please.

I am 41, tanned, blonde, 5'3 and size 8/10

My usual attire is jeans and country boots and Barbour jacket as we live in deepest darkest countryside! I'm always cold - I love dresses but it won't be warm enough for that.

Thank you!!!

@MissMarplesGoddaughter

Wear thermals.

I went to Scotland in June once and wore thermals and my winter coat every day. It is cold, windy and even thought the sun may be out, there is no warmth in it.

🤣 There is indeed warmth in the sun

That sounds perfect for shopping in Braehead and Sunday lunch in a pub near Loch Lomond. Just clean the mud off your boots for the shopping centre.

HelebethH · 21/03/2022 07:33

I love dresses , thick tights and boots when going out in Glasgow. The trick is layers. I swear by M&S heatgen thermals long sleeve tshirt tops.
Ultra thin and light under dresses but soooooo warm. Enjoy your weekend away

liveforsummer · 21/03/2022 07:44

Parts of Scotland hit over 20c shade temp this weekend and the sunny if slightly cooler weather is set to continue in to next week end. This makes it harder as as soon as the sun goes down it's freezing. You need clothes for all seasons (at least hopefully not a rain coat though). Layers are the one. I'd avoid a black coat for such sunny weather personally but no need to be too dressy

carefullycourageous · 21/03/2022 07:46

Big jumper
Big coat
Jeans
Trainers

Barrawarra · 21/03/2022 07:46

Yesterday I was in a t shirt in the garden in Glasgow and it was lovely, I’d plan layers in case!

liveforsummer · 21/03/2022 08:24

Yes t shirt weather yesterday, 10 minutes to scrape solid ice off my car this morning 😆

Oldh · 21/03/2022 08:28

Whenever I go to Scotland, whatever I brought to wear for the week is all put on at once! The cold shocks me every time. I was is Glasgow recently, and almost everyone had hats, coats, jumpers. There was the odd exception walking around in a t shirt, but I don't know what was keeping them warm. Hmm

SnaccidentsHappen · 21/03/2022 08:36

It is still chilly here (Glasgow) even a bit of frost this morning. Saturday I would say has been the nicest day so far and I seen everything from people still wearing not parkas and boots to a more sensible jumper and jeans combo to dresses/shorts/T-shirts and flip flops.

The latter where shivering, I found it quite funny as it's only March 😂.

It can get quite warm in the shopping centre so jeans and blazer is fine but I would want to have something warmer than a blazer if out and about. Lunch - jeans and blazer would also be fine but consider how you are getting there. But can fine, walking/public transport then you will want to layer as the weather could go either way.

I sat our in the garden yesterday it was lively, but I did still have jeans and a long sleeved top on. As soon as the sun was gone it was pretty chilly

Goldengoosey · 21/03/2022 09:57

Peoples views of Glasgow are interesting. It’s a bit like describing what someone wears in London as if there is only one style.

Glasgow is multi cultural and diverse city with some fabulous styles. Anything goes. Wear what you’re comfortable in. I was in Braehead on Saturday. We then went for lunch and sat outside. It was 18 degrees and lovely and sunny although got cooler quickly around 4. So I would maybe add a nice big scarf to your outfit.

As for Sunday lunch. Really depends what kind of place you’re going to. We went for a drive yesterday and had lunch in a gastro type country pub. Again a mix of styles. For what it’s worth I’m 10 years older than you. Not tanned and def not 8/10 Grin but I had a flowery midi dress on. Air & Grace trainers, bikers jacket and scarf and dare I say it I was carrying one of those ever so common Mulberry bags so def don’t take any style tips from me as apparently I’m quite common Grin

bettertocryinamercedes · 21/03/2022 12:43

Thanks everyone! I don't get away often and I want to look nice for my husband 😂

Can't remember the last time I went shopping or for a weekend away in a city!

Sporting a lovely bruise at the moment where a sheep kicked ne yesterday so at least it's not the height of summer and bare legs season!

You’re overthinking it
Bareheaded is a shopping centre, you’ll see people in leggings and sweatshirts and people perfectly dressed
Pub in Loch Lommond? Layers, but a nice pair of jeans and nice cardi would not look out of place, same if you’re wearing a nice dress and a long coat
It’s getting sunny, but it’s Scotland, so the wind can make it very cold

pharmagal · 21/03/2022 22:50

Just to say, would definitely recommend that you book somewhere for lunch. Everywhere will be busy on Mother's Day, and lots of people flock to Loch Lomond in nice weather.

KimikosNightmare · 21/03/2022 23:21

@Doidontimmm

You are way way over thinking this! No one is going to notice what you are wearing! Just wear your normal everyday clothes for shopping!
Way over thinking it. Scotland is pretty much like anywhere else.
KimikosNightmare · 21/03/2022 23:24

@Easterbunnyiswindowshopping

Scotland in April? Exactly as you were op. Plenty of layers!! No bare ankles! No bare head!
I sat in the garden reading for several hours on Sunday.
Blimeyherewegoagain · 21/03/2022 23:28

Take a waterproof- Glasgow’s known as Raintown for good reason!

Jumpingintomenopause · 21/03/2022 23:58

@PenelopeProsser

If West Coast I'd pick more blingy jewellery than I would wear in Edinburgh and not skip make up.

I was out in Glasgow city centre Princes Square area and it was much smarter than Edinburgh despite the fact I was there at lunch time and the place I went to in Edinburgh for dinner on the same day was actually more expnsive/ upmarket....

Are you going to Cameron House or equivalent (has it even re-opened yet).

@PenelopeProsser Cameron house is fully reopened and looking great.

Like others have said - Glasgow is multicultural and awash with different styles.
I spent Saturday morning shopping then had lunch in The Anchorline on Saturday afternoon and wore a floral maxi shirt dress, black tights, chunky Chelsea boots and a biker jacket. I had the jacket off in minutes when the sun shone.

Today I had coffee with friends and more shopping- blue high waisted turn up jeans, white blouse, veeja trainers and pale blue woolen coat.

Zonder · 22/03/2022 03:25

I would definitely book the restaurant as you said - mother's Day is bound to make everywhere busier.

Glorieta · 22/03/2022 04:24

Like others i would say for shopping and jumper plus lightweight coat for branded as it gets very hot in the shops

I like layering a lighter weight but dark print maxi dress with a toning pointelle jumper over it plus tights and fly london boots for a slightly more seasonal look

VerityPJohnson · 22/03/2022 12:44

I think you can look very nice in jeans and jumper if they are well fitting and look purposefully selected. Especially with accessories.

I would have thought you could wear Saturday’s outfit again just with a fresh top, pack light.

The whole world has got more casual so even in very upmarket places you can easily be somewhat overdressed which can read as lacking style, weirdly. Some friends and I deliberately set out to be overdressed In these places as otherwise when do we actually ever dress up now. But it’s very easily done, compared to the average person (I’m talking about places like The Savoy)

Mycatisfabulous · 23/03/2022 21:54

People from Scotland saying it’s warm though wont mean much to people from the south

It was 19 degrees in Glasgow today. I'm pretty sure that's good weather for a day March by most people's standards
Zonder · 23/03/2022 23:02

Isn't the op also from Scotland anyway?

We've been outside Scotland and experienced other temperatures you know 😆. I lived in Cyprus for 10 years, I can tell you what warm feels like (fwiw it was several degrees warmer in Edinburgh yesterday than it was in Larnaca and only about 2c cooler than London).
bettertocryinamercedes · 24/03/2022 12:45

Yes the far North of Scotland. Was lambing outside in a vest top last night! It was boiling (15 degrees 😂)
