Is the Mumsnet haircut any good?

Just that really.

Does it suit any face shape?
Is it easy to do?
Any hairdressers on here who would (or wouldn't) recommend it?

I currently have a shoulder length bob, all one length, centre parting and fringe, if that's relevant.

Loads of you tube videos of people doing it.
I think it works really well if you have straight hair.

JaneJeffer · 19/03/2022 20:21

I didn't like the triangular shape at the bottom.

Blackopal · 19/03/2022 20:38

No, I did it it lock down. Was awful sort of a mullet shape with pointy bit at back

LondonQueen · 19/03/2022 20:44

What's the mumsnet haircut?

DiscoBadgers · 19/03/2022 21:05

No. It’s basically a mullet. But DO IT, and post photos Grin

MaizeAmaze · 19/03/2022 21:14

Shoulder length, I think you risk it getting too short in areas.
Mine is wavy. When I lived somewhere that had very few hairdressers who know how to handle European hair, I used to cut it myself between trips to the UK. It works on long hair.

@LondonQueen

What's the mumsnet haircut?
This, what on earth is the Mumsnet haircut? Hmm
youkiddingme · 19/03/2022 21:18

@LondonQueen

What's the mumsnet haircut?
now I need to know
MaizeAmaze · 19/03/2022 21:24

MN hair cut I knew as the unicorn haircut.
Put hair in a tight ponytail right at the top-front of your head. Pull the bobble along until it's the length you want the shortest bit to be, and take the scissors to just above the bobble.

Laney39 · 19/03/2022 21:30

I did it in lockdown, the higher the ponytail on top of your head is, the more mullet like it is! . It was OK but cut a very small amount at a time, if you don't like it stop and if it's just a small amount won't be a disaster.I have wavy hair so a bit more forgiving.

ffscovid · 19/03/2022 21:47

Yes but you need to get the ponytail just right. Think unicorn horn (high on your forehead) rather than pineapple (on the top of your head). Get the ponytail too high and you'll have a mullet.

Thoosa · 19/03/2022 21:51

The MNhaircut is making a tight unicorn ponytail just above your forehead and point cutting into it.

It gives you a sort of layered, graduated shag. Not perfect but quite face framing.

I did it once in an emergency and it wasn’t too different from the cuts I got in the 00s. I wouldn’t have liked to live with it for long, though.

soulinablackberrypie · 19/03/2022 22:15

It suits me but I have wavy hair. I think I'd be more scared of trying it if I had straight hair, especially if it was thick, as any mistakes would be really obvious.

JaneJeffer · 19/03/2022 22:20

Don't put your fringe in the ponytail.

RagzRebooted · 19/03/2022 22:22

I did it for years, I have wavy hair and it was below my shoulders so it was fine. Just be careful the front doesn't go too short. You need quite long hair or it won't work. There are a couple of other ponytail haircuts that give different shapes, YouTube is your friend here.
My sister is a hairdresser and she was horrified, but she wasn't around to cut my hair and I hadn't ever been to and actual hairdresser so I cut my own hair until a few years ago.

RagzRebooted · 19/03/2022 22:24

@JaneJeffer

Don't put your fringe in the ponytail.
Yeah, this. I learned to leave the front bit out after making it too short a few times!

Hair grows pretty quickly though and it's only hair. Colleagues were half horrified and half envious they weren't brave enough to do it themselves. My boss asked me to do hers during lock down, but I drew the line at that as I can't see ruining my boss's hair as being a smart move!

fourfeatherfalls · 20/03/2022 08:29

Eek, I'm not doing it! Sounds too risky. Thank you so much for talking me out of it. I think I might have ended up with a bad seventies pageboy effect, rather than a Farrah Fawcett look. Grin

Oh no I can’t see how you’d possibly get pageboy. It’s point cut so you don’t get anything like a straight line. It’s more like layers, but more layered at the front than back.

Obviously you have to brave or quite stuck to go for it, so if you’re not comfortable, definitely don’t do it.

Had to point out it’s nothing like a pageboy, though. Nothing.

Thoosa · 20/03/2022 14:15

It’s more Jennifer Aniston than either of those TBH. When straight, anyway. Maybe a bit more FF when wavy.

cherrysthename · 20/03/2022 14:52

It's having a bit of a moment on Tik Tok and YouTube, but renamed the shag or the wolf cut. Brad Mondo has a YouTube video up on it.

FavouriteGame · 20/03/2022 15:08

The shag/wolf cut is more complicated than the Mumsnet one. Mumsnet is one ponytail. Shag/wolf that Brad Mondo does you section the hair so you get proper layers and not just short and long. I’ve done the Mumsnet haircut and it just doesn’t do enough, it didn’t look bad but it didn’t look good.

bare · 20/03/2022 15:16

It was SO funny in lockdown the amount of MN's doing this Grin

Thoosa · 20/03/2022 15:22

Oh I didn’t know Brad had got involved. I love his videos. Grin

crispmidnightpeace · 20/03/2022 15:52

I've been cutting my own hair for years and there are many ways to do it you can find on youtube. So just find one that you like and use that.

Throughabushbackwards · 20/03/2022 16:35

I've been doing the MN haircut since lockdown Grin

My hair is long (to my waist) and a fine texture but there is a lot of it. It's naturally wavy and the haircut looks great if I curl or scrunch dry it. I think if you have short or fine hair perhaps avoid.
