Who cares ?

Those that enjoy Style and Beauty! You're obviously on the wrong thread / tipic!

You're conflating style with being in fashion. They are not synonymous.

So many threads going this way on S&B now. It’s so boring.

The OP asked if wearing matching accessories was old fashioned. She’s asking about what’s in fashion. PPs have their responses. Then someone always comes along saying wear what you like! We’re all adults. We know we can wear what we like but many people are interested in what’s in fashion or wearing things that are fashionable.

TollgateDebs · 16/03/2022 08:17

No, if it works and you love it. My proviso is that they should work apart too with other elements of the wardrobe. I always regret a purchase of a shoe / bag, in a beautiful suede (but unusual colour) and the bag after the one use never had another outing.

TollgateDebs · 16/03/2022 08:21

As for it being fashionable, here's an interesting read brunettefromwallstreet.com/matching-bag-shoes/

Everydaydayisaschoolday · 16/03/2022 08:29

I often match black/black but apart from that I don't match shoes and handbags. Matching brights or pastels can look a bit Grattan catalogue (an oldie reference there from back in the day when all aspired to was to look and dress like a Grattan catalogue model).

I do try and tone things though so jewels or bright colour handbags would be worn with black footwear or white trainers and brown/tan bags will be worn with coloured shoes or trainers. But there's no real rule. It's a question of what seems to pull a look together and more realistically, what comes to hand and fits what needs to be carried that day!

dudsville · 16/03/2022 08:58

Yes, it's not been trendy for a good while now, but I think it was so impractical. Imagine either how few or how many bags and shoes a person would have to have to matter this matched look! Either you stick with black and brown and only two handbags or aim high like the queen!

PoxyAndIKnowIt · 16/03/2022 09:38

Reminds me of MIL some decades ago... so many sets of matching bags and shoes, all expensive; and matching leather gloves in winter too! She had a style that I considered old fashioned when I was young and grungey, but then again, she always looked more stylish and better put together than anyone else!

I would say matching may look good in situations where you are smart or formal, but may be a bit much for more casual times.

soulinablackberrypie · 16/03/2022 10:15

I would say it depends what colour they are. If they're tan or taupe or even red, it doesn't look as if you've made much effort to match them since they're everyday things. If you have a matching bag and shoes in a rare shade of pale lilac, for example, it does look a bit more contrived. I'm not sure how fashionable or unfashionable it is, as I don't really follow mainstream fashion. I like vintage style and I think matching bags and shoes sometimes work quite well as part of that.

Boood · 16/03/2022 10:37

I don’t go for matches, but I also never mix brown/tan and black.

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 16/03/2022 10:48

@RampantIvy

In the same vein - is wearing a matching necklace and earring set a no no these days?

Yes!

As for matching shoes and bags, agree that neutral tones are fine and can make an outfit look quite pulled together tbh. Blacks, browns, creams, tans, etc. but more noticeable bolder / pastel colours are a no. And especially patterns which are even more matchy matchy. So no LV logo printed shoes with an LV logo bag, etc.

But I would do a slouchy tan boots with a puffy tan pillow bag for example as long as the entire outfit tied together

VerityPJohnson · 16/03/2022 11:03

Depends on occasion a bit but for a casual look it would be old fashioned. It’s more modern to layer up colours Trinny style or to be deliberately mismatched. For a dressier look if you were going for old school glamour it might work but agree about more obscure colours and anything too obvious.

suburbanwinter · 16/03/2022 11:04

Someone has said on one of my style groups on FB recently that nothing is more ageing than a matching bag and shoes. I've thought about it a lot since and I agree.

RampantIvy · 16/03/2022 15:40

Good job I got a grey bag for Christmas.
I don't own any grey shoes.

Lovinglife45 · 16/03/2022 18:38

Surbanwinter
Unless wearing neutral colours, matching coat with bag is also old fashioned.

Cormoran · 16/03/2022 20:39

I have ballerina flats in more than a dozen colours. When I use my red bag, I like to put on my red ballerina and it looks amazing.
I often associate belts with shoes or bag as well, but never more than 2, so no to shoes, bag AND belt/bracelet/sunglasses...

Calandor · 16/03/2022 23:24

Depends - if the entire outfit is the same colour then it's in style 😂 Whether entirely bubblegum pink or all various nude tones

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 16/03/2022 23:29

God don’t tell all the Fairfax & Favor obsessives that it’s old fashioned and twee to match bags and shoes, they spend hundreds of pounds just to do exactly that. 😂

BusterGonad · 17/03/2022 08:08

I don't match them up, I prefer to team up with a colour that suits. EG soft grey boots with mint green bag, dark purple bag with brown boots or Navy and black.

BusterGonad · 17/03/2022 08:16

But it can look good, like with anything. It just really depends on the overall look.

NotAScoobyToBeSeen · 17/03/2022 17:22

But this is called style and beauty, not fashion and beauty. Style and fashion are incredibly different. You can have style and either follow the fashions or not, but if you purely follow fashions then you probably dont have style

LittleGwyneth · 17/03/2022 17:57

Matching neutrals good, matching jewel tones (or any other colour colours) bad.

Absolutely
SookieHouseboat · 17/03/2022 18:18

Matching nails, hand/feet, matching make up colours to clothes and matching shoes and bags, all very old fashioned

Brideandprejudice · 17/03/2022 18:20

Mine always match, I'm under 30

Well said. I totally agree.
Laiste · 17/03/2022 18:26

Lipstick and nails!

Gosh i remember them matching.

Nowadays i hope to get 3 weeks out of my gel polish - no switching nail colour a couple of times a week anymore.
