Is it old fashioned to match bag and shoes?

Just as the title says.... I need some help not to look old!

OP posts:
Alfixnm · 15/03/2022 20:16

I think so. Although I still often do for a dressy occasion, eg a wedding...

TonkaTruckduck · 15/03/2022 20:26

Depends on the occassion, what have you got in mind?

XingMing · 15/03/2022 20:28

So we are told, but actually and I am old so you may prefer to ignore my views I think it can look great, but matched-mismatched is better IYKWIM. So never an identical match, siblings, not twins. Same colour, different textures. Same colour but different intensity. Or a deliberate clash.

Ohyesiam · 15/03/2022 20:35

I just asked my daughter, and she says yes it’s old fashioned 🤣

Tigertigertigertiger · 15/03/2022 20:37

Who cares ?

Well, you learn something every day.

I am glad I have the confidence to wear what I know looks nice rather than what some fashion guru has 'decided' is 'in vogue' in any particular season.

If you think it looks nice OP, then wear it. I'll wager most folk will think it looks dressy too Smile

Grasping · 15/03/2022 20:42

I try not to but it’s not always practical.
I’m sure all those people with black bags must wear black boots

Orchidflower1 · 15/03/2022 20:45

I don’t think it’s old fashioned for a dressy occasion.

RampantIvy · 15/03/2022 20:45

In the same vein - is wearing a matching necklace and earring set a no no these days?

I think the “who cares?” comment was referring to the question of whether it looks old-fashioned; plenty of very stylish outfits look “old-fashioned” - we’re not all interested in keeping up with whatever teenagers are wearing this week 🤷🏾‍♀️

I think it varies, OP - actual matching items (e.g. the same print) can look a bit prim, but if it’s a case of e.g. tan shoes and a tan bag, that doesn’t necessarily look good or bad in itself - it totally depends on the items.

Blush21 · 15/03/2022 21:04

It’s personal preference I always try to match or get a similar colour etc so it looks cohesive. I’m 26 and have always done this. It’s not old fashioned

Gonnagetgoing · 15/03/2022 21:05

You can do it but personally I wouldn’t do it. I’d contrast or clash colours.

Lurking9to5 · 15/03/2022 21:06

Yeh I think it is. They probably shouldn't CLASH though

Amelion · 15/03/2022 21:21

I think it is. I think complimentary or a contrast looks better. It’s more interesting and less ‘safe’ than a matchy-matchy look.

TheBigPeach · 15/03/2022 21:23

I did not know this!

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 15/03/2022 21:41

They can do but not necessarily.

It depends on the outfit and the colours.

Too matchy can look a bit Mother if the Bride and old fashioned so I wouldn't match patterns or trims/features.

Bag and shoes in the same neutral colour, tends to look smart and not obviously matchy.

I think the main this is that you need to make sure that your whole outfit works together, it doesn't have to all match but for a pulled together look you probably want each item to link to something else you are wearing. Not necessarily overall colour, it could be picking out a colour in a print or some trim or in an accessory. The exception being if you are wearing a single colour with one contrasting statement piece.

You're conflating style with being in fashion. They are not synonymous.

ClandestineAdulation · 15/03/2022 23:14

I tend to wear outfits of only one colour so do often match a bag and shoes to bring a pop of colour (and I’m 28!)

If I wear jeans and a black cami top to go out then I’ll occasionally wear black shoes/bag but sometimes go with red or gold to break things up a bit.

Lovinglife45 · 16/03/2022 00:12

Neutral colours such as brown, black and grey are okay. However when you move on to pastels or bright colours it looks too safe and matchy matchy if shoes and bag are almost identical in shade.

Bussinbussin · 16/03/2022 05:01

I really love matching a tan bag and shoes, especially in summer with an otherwise all black or white outfit.

I'm generally at pains not to match otherwise, but like a PP I'm mostly always in neutrals and earthy colours so it all goes.

NurseBernard · 16/03/2022 05:06

Yeah, I would match tan and tan, but other than that….

Tanfastic · 16/03/2022 05:41

Wow you learn something new every day. I'd consider myself stylish (but not cutting edge obviously) but I always tend to wear a black bag of I've got black shoes etc. I feel a bit weird wearing a black bag with tan sandals, I'd instantly go for my tan leather cross body but that's just me.

I wouldn't however wear a green bag with green shoes though. That looks a bit dated to me.

Neutrals, yeah I'd always match but bright colours I wouldn't.

Baaaa · 16/03/2022 06:51

I always match black and brown but not colours. But then I don't wear many colourful shoes.
