Can I really not have curtain bangs/fringe?

Hi,

My hairdresser says it's a bad idea Sad I have been toying with the idea for a while now, but have been nervous about taking the plunge. I don't like change Confused

Anyway, I asked my hairdresser the other day and assumed tbh that she'd just say yes, why not give it a go, but straight away she said NO. Apparently because my hair has a natural wave/curl, it will just bounce up, but I don't leave my hair to dry naturally, ever, so I can't really see why that would be an issue

One of the reasons I wanted curtain bangs is because my hairline is receding a bit and I'm definitely thinner on top, so it can look a bit flat. I was hoping this would give me a bit of lift and hide my receding hairline and increasing forehead, but think she was saying something about my being thinner on top being a problem for any kind of fringe 🤷‍♀️

I really am starting to dislike what I see in the mirror these days and thought this could give me a little boost, but maybe not. Saying that, I remember another hairdresser from a couple of years ago strongly suggesting I had one and I wouldn't say my hair is any different now. She did have a lot of experience, but then I kind of see my current hairdressers point.

FWI I'm 37, long dark, thickish hair, with a caramel balayage. Face shape is oval, but with cheeks and quite a narrow, but high forehead, so need balancing out.

Thoughts please. Really need a refresh.

If you're happy to style them every day I think you could try it. Have you looked at youtube videos for curtain bangs? These days there's probably even an app where you can see how you'd look with different hair styles.

Tittyfilarious · 15/03/2022 13:55

@Tequilaaaaaa Hi , I'd get the fringe cut in if you want 1 , if you don't like it or its difficult to style then you can grow it back out

TabithaTittlemouse · 15/03/2022 13:58

It will sit differently if it is wavy but a good hairdresser should be able to cut it in a way that makes it sit well regardless of wave/curl.

JaneJeffer · 15/03/2022 14:04

Some hairdressers don't like cutting fringes. I once asked for one and she said oh no that wouldn't look right even though I often had one before and it was perfectly fine! She eventually agreed to do a side fringe.

Tequilaaaaa · 15/03/2022 14:11

@NerdyBird, yes I have been looking on YouTube and it looks really easy! Too easy perhaps 😂 Especially that criss cross technique - looks fool proof, but that doesn't mean much for an absolute rookie like me!

I've got curly /wavy hair and have had a fringe for over 10 years. I blow dry my hair when I wash it and it's fine - do have to get the straightners on it if it gets wet but other than that it's never been an issue.

Imaysnapandfart · 15/03/2022 14:23

Literally read this as "certain bangs or a fling" Grin

Billandben444 · 15/03/2022 14:24

If you're going a bit thin on top will there be enough to make a decent fringe? As mine thinned I was cutting into more hair each time to bring it forward so it wasn't so wispy - not ideal! - and eventually I gave up on the pathetic thing and grew it out.

Gonnagetgoing · 15/03/2022 14:25

Go to another hairdresser and see what they say.

Tequilaaaaa · 15/03/2022 14:52

@Imaysnapandfart, haha can I really not have either?! Grin

@Gonnagetgoing, well yes, this would be the next move I guess.

I also have quite a receding hairline due to hair loss and feel self conscious about it. I did consider a sort of fringe but tbh there won’t the weight in it (not enough hair!) and I don’t think it will sit right. Could it be that?

Craftycorvid · 15/03/2022 14:58

I have wavy hair and a fringe which would curl if I didn’t straighten it with tongs - it’s not even a five-minute job though?!

Tequilaaaaa · 15/03/2022 15:03

@Crackercrazy, possibly. I have definitely experienced hair loss of the last few years, but hopefully has slowed down a bit now.

I have seen some some women with the same kind of hair get curtain bangs and it makes their hair look much fuller, even though they've actually lost some. This is obviously what I'm hoping for, but may not get.

I’ve had a fringe cut recently and I have fine hair. I also have a cows lick so need to dry it properly but it’s literally seconds. Dry it when it still very wet before anything else brushing one way then the other and not over a barrel brush. Don’t try and dry it into curtains, just dry it straight down and push it into position once fully dry.
Not me in the photo but this effect.

Hairdressers should have wigs of common hairstyles so can try them on and see what you look like in them!

PoxyAndIKnowIt · 15/03/2022 15:53

I have wavy hair and a fringe. 2 of my DD's have full on curly plus fringe. Me and DD1 blow dry our fringes, DD2 keeps hers curly. Sometimes I'll spent literally 10 seconds with the straighteners if I want to tidy up later.

I think we all look bloody marvellous!

Diva66 · 16/03/2022 18:47

I’ve just discovered I have curtain bangs, I didn’t realise that’s what they’re called! I love them, they give the hair a bit of shape and bounce and they’re not a all difficult to style.

cigarettesNalcohol · 16/03/2022 18:56

High maintenance that needs styling every. Single. Day. And if it's raining or really windy, the moment you step outside it will get ruined.

For me personally the fact that you mentioned you are thinning on top makes me think best not to cut curtain bangs as the daily tension of the brush & heat pulling on your hair will contribute to that. Could be wrong but that's what I see happening

As someone with a natural wave, who has had disastrous fringes, I say listen to your hairdresser or suffer the above. Every slightly damp day, even if sheltered under an umbrella so that not a drop of rain lands on you, your fringe will bounce halfway up your forehead where it will dry with a kink. Twice I’ve had the great idea to have a fringe, instantly regretted it both times.

I'm the same OP. I love the look of fringes and have a high forehead so feel a fringe would balance/frame my face but hairdresser says no. I've got wavy hair. Not receding but definitely thinner at front.

Back21970 · 16/03/2022 22:16

Give it a try, with another hairdresser if need be, it doesn’t work it will grow out in a few months.

I would a bit annoyed if my hairdresser refused to do something so basic, it’s not like you are asking for a Mohican!

Yes, it will be a bit more work styling if it’s curly but may well look great and be worth the extra few minutes each day.

I have fine frizzy hair with a side fringe and I find hair styling powder good for keeping it in place and adding a bit of thickness.

Bumble and Bumble do a good one, it’s pricy but there are cheaper versions Smile

Totally disagree. I have a fringe, have had all sorts of types of fringe and no fringe. It’s no harder to look after than not having one, just literally brush your hair and go (and it hides my wrinkly forehead and frames my face better when my hair is up).
boobot1 · 16/03/2022 22:31

I love a fringe, it takes years off too.
