What do you think to women in their 30's with log hair? : Is it time for a change.?

Am 32 this year

Have had same hairstyle since I was 7. Long with a fringe.

Saw This Morning today (how crap is Julian Clary btw?) and they were giving women with long hair the chop, some looked fab with swishy new locks, all shiny and healthy.

I'm thinking 2008, new do and all? Whadya reckon?

DrN, you look great as it is, only change if YOU want to, not because you feel you ought to.

I am 41 in a few weeks and can't afford to cut my hair short. You have to get it trimmed so much more often!

I have shaggy dog type waves, so towel dry, brush out and leave. Couldn't bear to have to start preening and blow drying and all that palaver...

do fancy a change but too lazy to do anythign about it. Also, as my mum kept my hair short all my childhood whilst I was a lanky skinnymalink with no boobs, people thought I was a boy. I'm not going there again!!!!

southeastastra · 04/01/2008 22:13

mine is long and straight and i've found the best thing to do is just let it grow but keep the fringe long and have a graduation on the sides so it sort of merges, rather than a fringe and then a long bit.

does that make sense .

Ozymandius · 04/01/2008 22:13

Thick, long hair which goes into lovely soft lush undulating waves can turn into a horrible, unmanagable pudding basin or a nerdy granny shape when cut short. The weight of longer hair makes thick hair a million times easier long in my experience. You'll go from a quick blow dry to hours with product and straightener!

wessexgirl · 04/01/2008 22:14

Just checked your pic, Dr N - your hair is lovely, not at all muttonish. You've a few years yet, I reckon.

Mine is freakishly thick and heavy so I started looking like the poster girl for frumpiness as soon as I hit 30 and bobbed accordingly. Yours looks as if it moves while mine just hung there.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 04/01/2008 22:17

I have turned 30 and still have my long hair, just below my bra strap. Have always had long hair, although I have never had a fringe - all one length.
I recently had a fringe cut in and had so many comments from friends and family. It has made me feel like I want to try more things with my hair now.

pointydog · 04/01/2008 22:26

very long isn't good

MrsKittylette · 04/01/2008 22:28

My hairs really long and I need to find something,

Im not 309 yet, im 23 but still need help!

MrsKittylette · 04/01/2008 22:28

oops not 309!! I meant 30!!

LoveAngel · 04/01/2008 22:29

I love long hair on any age, but personally speaking, I've decided to go for the chop after having long hair pretty much all my life (had a bob at the age of 13 but grew it out!). Am now approaching 31 and just feel like something sassier, so am going for a layered long bob tomorrow morning at the hairdressers (eek!). Worst case scenario I'll grow it long again. Go on. Do it!

I am 42 and still have longish hair with no intention of cutting it into some sort of 'do' Also wear bun/ponytail/chignon nearly every day for ease.I think short hair is very aging and masculine unless you look like mia farrow circa 1960's

Lizzylou · 05/01/2008 12:43

Your hair is gorgeous, you look fab.

If it aint broke don't fix it (or something)

MegaLegs · 05/01/2008 12:44

I'm 39 and have just grown mine long again. Most of my adult life I have grown it really long and then had it cut dramatically short only to grow it long again. I have a short fringe and long layers. I take better care of it and have reg trims. My hair is the healthiest and thickest it's ever been so I'm keeping it.

PeachyHasAFiggyPudInTheOven · 05/01/2008 12:48

Mine's long atm (ish) which is unusual as I am far moe of a cropped as short as possible girl, but ahridressers are a bit of a waste of time and cash at the moment when I have other priorities.

Mine's thick with a wave rather than curl that has a noticeable kink in places so it has to be either long or short

noddyholder · 05/01/2008 12:51

Old birds with long hair rock!

Cloudhopper · 05/01/2008 12:53

definitely keep it long. i always found it bemusing when people with lovely long hair have it all cut off when they get to about 30. WHY????

Take your lead from all the actresses etc who keep their long hair much longer. They wouldn't dream of getting it all cut off.

if it is nice, then keep it long. there is plenty of time later on in life to have a change of hairstyle/blue rinse/granny perm.

harleyd · 05/01/2008 12:54

keeping mine long forever

Elphaba · 05/01/2008 12:54

Whaaaat?! I am 35 and have long hair and it looks perfectly nice to me!

I'm 41 and have shouldder length hair, am I too old for it then? Eeek.

Elphaba · 05/01/2008 13:01

DrNorthener - your hair looks lovely to me. No reason to change imo. If you had it cut at all I wouldn't take it shorter than shoulder length.

MrsBadger · 05/01/2008 13:04

[disclaimer - missed this thread last night as dd went mad]
I didn't tell Janeite to have all her hair cut off, I said she should take it to just below shoulder length to improve the condition and make it more manageable whilst still being long.

turquoise · 05/01/2008 13:14

Don't cut it all - shorter could make your face look wide. You look gorgeous - it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Older women (43 yo crone here) definitely need to cut and style once they start to go grey - nothing worse than the straggly, wiry, greying Janis Joplin look IMO. That's what scared me into cutting mine, just on shoulders now without fringe, but am toying with the Katie Holmes new bob - though think it could look a bit helmet head - or worse, Hello Dolly (am blonde).

runnyhabbit · 05/01/2008 13:19

I think its all about whether long hair suits you.

I have short hair (well, jaw length) because long hair looks awful on me (and I used to wear it up all the time)

Remember age is only something on your birth certificate
