Getting my “colours done” on the cheap?

OnceAgainWithFeeling · 10/03/2022 20:08

I have the chance to get my colours done for a bargain price (£50 - on a voucher site). Will mean about 3 hours round trip for a 1ish hour appt. online reviews are good but no mention of getting fabric/color samples to take away afterwards. I can’t really afford to go to the fancier places that charge £150-200.

So, I guess I’m wondering how good it can be without the take home bits? Any thoughts?

Sorry affect what I wear.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 11/03/2022 07:23

You don't have to restrict if you don't want to tho rosie. I won't not wear yesterday's top now I see the difference it and the bright green one but good to know the green seems to wake me up - much needed!! I think the hair is good as people can have the wrong tone for their skin in their hair. I imagine they would advise on hair colour also. A friend who had it done years ago was told not to wear black, I'd agree with that on her, but she loves it so still does. She knows what brights to wear tho and is stunning in them.

sairiegamp · 11/03/2022 08:41

@lilmishap
I apologise - I totally misunderstood your point and jumped in totally unnecessarily just to ... well I don't know why, show off? Be mean? God knows. I'm sorry.

I have had my colours done decades ago precisely because I have zero sense of style or taste. I "kind of" sensed I look d better in blue of this shade not that shade, but that's a bit like "kind of" knowing you like Chardonnay. So your point is absolutely sound.

I really enjoyed my Color me beautiful session at the time but mostly because there was this stylish woman telling me what precise shade of jade I suited best. Good luck OP you'll have heaps of fun!

I think it’s worthwhile going for a proper House of Colour consultation and style too, as over time I’m sure it does save money. I say that as someone who hasn’t and instead has spent about 15 years figuring it out myself. I still don’t have all the tricks.

I think it’s something you benefit from as you get older. When you’re young you can get away with anything. As you age if you wear the wrong colours you fade into the background and look more tired. Although there is a certain ‘older lady who’s had her colours done’ look that isn’t the epitome of fashion, it’s a lot better than just wearing tired old clothes with no thought and a way to look vibrant and visible in a world that starts to ignore you after 40. At that point you are also more likely to wear what you want, not what you are supposed to.

This 100%. I had mine done age 40 when I was starting to feel "well what do I wear NEXT". When I can't say following trends makes me feel current anymore, but if I find clothes in the right cut for me something about them still isn't right (i.e. the shade).

Spring colours can look tacky and cheap if you are not a Spring. On a Spring they look expensive. Autumn colours look heavy and wear you down if you are not an Autumn. On an Autumn they look deeply classy and sophisticated. Summer colours look washed out if you are not a Summer. On a Summer they look refreshing. Etc.

OnceAgainWithFeeling · 11/03/2022 09:16

I think that’s the thing. I don’t buy fast fashion and have things in the wardrobe I wore in my early 30s which I still love and have just started wearing again after weight loss. I wear my stress/tiredness on my face - a bit of Botox in my 11s has stopped me looking “frowny” but there are days when I can’t work out why I look so drained (usually after looking at myself on video calls for hours on end) and would like to know what colours/patterns will just bring a lift to my complexion.

I wear a lot of black/dark grey/navy but also pops of colours. I’m very busty and know that ditsy/small patterns make me look enormous so I avoid those. I guess some more guidance will just focus me a bit more on what I want to achieve rather than “that’ll do”.

I don't "get" how hair colour doesn't affect the colours that suit a person.
Skin tone and present hair colour surely come as a package as to how one looks ?

I can never make out whether I'm Light Summer or Light Spring. My veins seem to be blue and green. I can't tell whether I am warm or cool toned. 🙄

For those of you who can't afford to pay for someone to do your colours for you, I've just tried doing it by myself on this website:

colorwise.me/welcome

Upload a photo of yourself in natural daylight, use the colour dropper tool to highlight your dominant skin, hair and eye colour and it'll give you your colour palette. Then there's an app to download containing that colour palette to take when you go shopping.

I think it seems pretty fool proof and correct, although I'm surprised/disappointed to learn I'm a warm autumn as that's not the colour palette I'm drawn to. I think I'll be trying on some of the suggested colours in the shops tomorrow to see how I get on, maybe it'll be a revelation!

MyBookShelf · 11/03/2022 15:50

I've just tried the website you've linked @Starryskiestonight and it suggested a completely different palette and season to the House of Colour sessions I had a few of years ago. I know I look good in the bright winter colours, and it suggested more muted, classic summer colours.

So if you really love a colour that it hasn't suggested for you, and that you think looks good, I'd go for it.

What did I say about black, dark grey and navy?!

“Your personal palette
The Deep Winter palette contains dark and vivid colors. Black will be a staple of your wardrobe, as will navy and charcoal—traditional “corporate” shades make it easy to build a great core wardrobe. Dress looks up with a shot of hot pink or Chinese blue.”

You said it's a three hour round trip, how much will the travel cost? It's worth taking that into account.

OnceAgainWithFeeling · 11/03/2022 16:54

£14.50 for the return train and a 20 min walk each way. (If it’s chucking it down I may switch to a £4 Uber!)

Can often tell when a hoc consultant posts somewhere "as a customer" . 😂

There's some great info on YouTube. I'd start there.

TokyoSushi · 11/03/2022 21:50

I've just tried that website and it says I'm a soft summer, I think it's actually pretty accurate!

I tried seven photos and every one of them gave me a different palette.
Muppetlove · 12/03/2022 08:30

@OnceAgainWithFeeling hoc consultants are often mums and their businesses are all franchises. Some definitely post on mumsnet.

OnceAgainWithFeeling · 12/03/2022 08:39

Okay. The woman I’m seeing doesn’t seem to be affiliated with any franchise.

Sorry to hijack your thread OP, but there seem to be some knowledgable people on here. Any recommendations for getting colours done in the North West? Thank you!

DaisyTheUnicorn · 12/03/2022 08:50

Im trying the link but everytime I click on my photo and "done" it doesn't upload! Grrr I want to know.

Crumbleburntbits · 12/03/2022 10:03

I tried the colorwise link . I guessed I was a Summer many years ago but wasn’t sure which type. I’ve tried several photos and it varies between soft and cool summer. It’s accurate for me as the palette colours are exactly what I wear all the time!
