Getting my “colours done” on the cheap?

OnceAgainWithFeeling · 10/03/2022 20:08

I have the chance to get my colours done for a bargain price (£50 - on a voucher site). Will mean about 3 hours round trip for a 1ish hour appt. online reviews are good but no mention of getting fabric/color samples to take away afterwards. I can’t really afford to go to the fancier places that charge £150-200.

So, I guess I’m wondering how good it can be without the take home bits? Any thoughts?

I want to get mine done but I know I'm some kind of autumn which is my least favourite palette, so I prefer to live in ignorance. Would love to be a spring!

What colour are your eyes and hair?
ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave · 10/03/2022 22:53

colourlady Hazel eyes, mid brown hair.

colourlady · 10/03/2022 22:56

You could be a summer? Maybe that is why you don't like the autumn palette.

OnceAgainWithFeeling · 10/03/2022 22:56

I’m really torn now.

The link I’ve posted has links to the lady’s website etc.

My veins are blue/green, I have hazel eyes and my natural hair colour is darkish brown (but it’s bright purple now).

I’ve not long started a new job in a fairly senior role, and we’re starting to meet in person more. I need to buy some new clothes but don’t want to risk getting it wrong.

OP I'd go for it. I LOVED my colour analysis.

I did actually need the wallet with colour swatches for the first few months, but I've just googled it and you can buy them on eBay quite cheaply (£13)
So I'd do that - have the analysis and then buy swatches afterwards.

colourlady · 10/03/2022 23:01

I would go for it. It sounds good value. You could buy yourself a copy of the CMB book too for extra info to refer to going forward.

Ah, there is hope! I'm pretty sure I am an autumn, sadly. I'm sure the colours look nice on me but I just can't get excited about them. Do you find people are always drawn to 'their colours?

(Sorry for me-railing your thread, OP)

OnceAgainWithFeeling · 10/03/2022 23:04

Thanks all. Sod it. I’m in. Grin

Do it! I had my colours & style done by house of colour 8 years ago & it was ace. Actually life changing. They should drape your with all the colours & you will see yourself what shades suit you. If possible I'd leave my hairdo until after the analysis as there may be a better colour/style you'd like to try. Enjoy, it was one of my favourite days out & going to treat a friend soon I think

I can’t find anything below £25?

Sometimes not, but usually once they have the right make up and hair they realise how flattering the right colours are. There is also the the question of solid colours, small and large prints and also which particular colours from the palette look best near your face. If you get it right you will look best in your colours.

My hair is one of my trademarks. Everyone comments on it. Took me 40 years to find it and I’m not letting it go for anything! I have to book my hairdresser 3 months in advance. I’d have to be dead to cancel her!

I’d be a bit wary of this. My sister got into it and started dressing like a 70 year old ( she was about 35). It’s a joke in Bridget Jones for reason.

TokyoSushi · 10/03/2022 23:20

I'm interested in this too, I've just ordered the Colour Me Beautiful, Carole Jackson book from eBay for £2.15 so I'll see if that can start me off!

MistySkiesAfterRain · 11/03/2022 01:15

When a PP mentioned that yoi can learn by looking, have a look into eye pattern and season as this is really interesting.

Winters tend to have eyes that are one solid colour.

Springs tend to have a starburst pattern around the iris.

Autumns have usually a smattering of two colours.

Summers tend to have petal like patterns, almost like a watercolour effect.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 11/03/2022 01:27

I have tan brown hair, amber eyes and bright but freckled skin.

Anyway, I would say typically you would think I was autumn but I never wear those rich autumn colours, they overpower me.

It turns out I was the one season and category I never thought I would be - Paintbox Spring.

The two colours that were really revealing for me were chocolate brown and bright navy. When I saw those on me it was that feeling where you know something and can't explain why.

I think you would get something from a face to face draping if they are experienced. Mine was very experienced. I was actually late and we had to rush but that almost helped as she was going on instinct.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 11/03/2022 01:35

There is a way to wear the colours. This took me ages to figure out. For Paintbox Springs, who can end up looking like childrens tv presenters, like me its best to keep to two neutrals and a splash of colour. Patterns like splashy florals.

The makeup is about as important as the colours too, especially lipstick and blusher.

I haven't done the style day and wish I had more ££ to do this mainly as it saves SO much time when shopping and less mistakes.

Pangolin44 · 11/03/2022 01:43

I guarantee that no truly stylish woman has ever had 'her colours done'.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 11/03/2022 06:34

Don't be silly Pangolin. I know plenty. They just know now what colours to buy/avoid. Are we supposed to be worried that we're not 'truly stylish' Hmm if we are interested in it? Nothing wrong with getting some help/opinion on shades that suit. As I spend the majority of my time in sports wear, colour often trumps style for me anyway.

CallmeHendricks · 11/03/2022 06:52

Ridiculous remark.
Rosehugger · 11/03/2022 07:04

It seems daft to cover the hair up. I've been very blonde, pink, red, plum, light brown, dark brown and some hair colours definitely effect what I wear. Particularly when blonde - quite easy to accidentally wear something my hair blends in with. Brown is easier.

I wouldn't want my colours done as I don't want to restrict what I wear or be told a colour I like to wear doesn't suit me.
