Terrible mistake! SPF50

Hello all, please can you help me! I’m 44, and my skin just looks SO awful. It’s quite dry but also greasy, and I’m just looking quite old all of a sudden. I’m currently fixated on the idea that I should be wearing SPF50 every day, so I’ve been applying regular suncream every day, and I’ve made it SO MUCH WORSE. Now i’m wearing moisturiser, sun cream AND primer, and my chin has broken out in spots and my whole face is peeling off. Something’s not right!

Anyway, any general advice would be much appreciated. But also, what SPF do people with (tired, dry but also somehow greasy) skin like mine recommended? I’m not made of money, but I am happy to invest if it will make a difference. Thank you so much.

Also the higher the factor, the longer it takes to be broken down by UVA/B rays.

stevalnamechanger · 09/03/2022 20:37

@ChiaraRimini

Primer, moisturiser and a separate sun cream? You are putting far too much on your skin. This will be blocking your pores and making it greasy. At this time of year you do not need sunscreen if you are in UK. Back to basics. Forget primer and sunscreen. Use a gentle cleanser, and a light moisturiser afterwards twice a day, until your skin clears up. Simple is fine. Sunscreen can wait until summer. Don't use primer except if you are wearing makeup and then be sure to double cleanse afterwards to get it all off.
You need sunscreen . UV damage is cumulative

Can recommend the Garnier face ones from boots for around £7. I use the one with glycerin as have dryer skin in winter but they have one with hyaluronic acid too for anti aging. They also have a face spray which I use for over make up if i need to reapply in the afternoon.

parchedjanuary · 09/03/2022 21:02

I also recommend La Roche Possay! One of their moisturisers with spf. I think the one I use has spf 30. Completely non greasy.

OohThatCat · 09/03/2022 21:05

Another vote for Biore watery essence and La Roche Posay anthelios!

Fundays12 · 09/03/2022 21:05

I use Avon face factor 50. It's light and doesn't leave my skin greasy. I use it half the year and factor 30 face creams the rest of the year. I am 41 and my skin still gets shiny which is annoying.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 09/03/2022 22:08

Double cleanse and the LRP, plenty of spf options to suit you. Good luck!

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 09/03/2022 22:09

I mean double cleanse to remove properly at end of day.

JeremyVinesEgo · 09/03/2022 22:14

Heliocare.

You may be overusing as it's easy done. And wash off properly, make sure your skincare regime is on point and you are using what you should. Which includes a SPF

Delatron · 09/03/2022 22:20

Ultra Violette is amazing and I’ve tried them all, normally a La Roche Posey fan but this is better. I get compliments on my skin when I’m wearing it.

I didn’t love Heliocare.

suzyscat · 09/03/2022 22:27

I like kiehl's mineral sunblock - it's expensive but it's the only mineral one that absorbs well and isn't greasy. I personally wouldn't want a non mineral one on mine or my kid's skin. Also wear a hat.

My skin is awful atm so you probably don't want my advice lol, but I think you want to work from the outside in. Collagen supplements, lots of water and cut the junk food. I'm really struggling with the latter at mo.' Blush

Flippy87 · 09/03/2022 22:28

I also use la roche posay anti Helios and love it

RudolfsLeftToe · 09/03/2022 22:35

I use acnecide moisturiser with spf30 and it’s great. Leaves my skin really soft and doesn’t cause spots, it’s not mega expensive either and can normally be bought on offer in Lloyds / Superdrug / asos.

Journeylikenomother · 09/03/2022 22:45

Image Skincare prevention+ SPF... It ain't cheap but worth every penny.

But as well as that I use plain rosewater as my toner (£2 from any pharmacy) and CeraVe facewash (again, cheap from pharmacy).

As other posters said - drinking water and lots of fruit and veg make such a difference. I don't go anywhere without my water bottle!

simbobs · 09/03/2022 23:01

Take no notice of those who say that spf is unnecessary in UK. It is the uvb rays that are responsible for skin ageing, and they are around 365 days of the year. You have had a lot of good suggestions. I would also throw in Unseen Sunscreen, and Gruum also do a couple of nice ones. For all day protection you can't beat Ultrasun, but to use properly it should go on before other products with time left for it to absorb.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 09/03/2022 23:02

@MorrisZapp

You'll get loads of recommendations but they're all awful on my skin. Science isn't there yet, no matter what Sali Hughes etc say.

I don't believe they actually wear sunscreen.

I buy a new 'doesn't feel like sunscreen' every summer and I manage a couple of hours before washing it off my face.

Lots of people love eg anthelios but it all feels like emulsion paint on me.

Me too, all feels awful. I've bought a hat instead!
doadeer · 09/03/2022 23:12

I use a lot of moisturising products in my routine and I find I don't need moisturiser and Spf in the morning - I do

Vit c
Snail mucin essence
Beauty pie Spf 50 with primer in
Erborian CC cream

It's perfect for me.

Biore watery essence is a really light one. Supergoop is also good.

doadeer · 09/03/2022 23:13

Agree you also need to take it off.

Cleansing balm or oil followed by a water based cleanser is best

oopsyupsydaisy · 09/03/2022 23:25

Why are you wearing spf 50 at all (assuming you're in the uk)?
This will definitely make you look greasy and tired and caked. This is for summer hols and beach!
Moisturising products.
Differentiate day and night. For me it's just a case of adding serum at night under the moisturiser I use in day. But I have very sensitive skin that's prone to spots so need to keep it steady eddy.
Less is more. Malin + Goetz vitamin E cream is very good.
A light moisturising foundation. Don't cover or conceal. Just even out the skin tone.
And just in case you weren't sure I'll also say: all this is totally superficial and should be done only to please you. You're gorgeous 🌺

Ballsaque · 09/03/2022 23:28

I’ve tried loads, high end and cheap.

This is the best by far…..

Moisturising but not greasy. Highly recommend!

Terrible mistake! SPF50
Ballsaque · 09/03/2022 23:28

And stop using so many products. Less is more!

TheBigPeach · 09/03/2022 23:30

Another for la Roche, the little bottle lasts a while because it’s quite thin liquid, a little goes a long way.

I’ve been using a Vichy one recently geared for aging skin and I like it but I find I need to use a lot to cover my face so I don’t think it’s as good value wise.

WellNotReally · 09/03/2022 23:56

No, it doesn't Confused

I wear it as I also use retinol products and I'm fair. Oh and because many dermatologists (in the UK) recommend wearing a high SPF on your face.

RLG1992 · 10/03/2022 06:16

A retinol based serum for fine lines and Ultrasun spf 50 under make up, that's my go to combo.

Grasping · 10/03/2022 07:37

I wear the Super City Block daily, unless it’s really sunny and I’m going to be outside a lot, then I wear La Roche Posay.
