Terrible mistake! SPF50

Hello all, please can you help me! I’m 44, and my skin just looks SO awful. It’s quite dry but also greasy, and I’m just looking quite old all of a sudden. I’m currently fixated on the idea that I should be wearing SPF50 every day, so I’ve been applying regular suncream every day, and I’ve made it SO MUCH WORSE. Now i’m wearing moisturiser, sun cream AND primer, and my chin has broken out in spots and my whole face is peeling off. Something’s not right!

Anyway, any general advice would be much appreciated. But also, what SPF do people with (tired, dry but also somehow greasy) skin like mine recommended? I’m not made of money, but I am happy to invest if it will make a difference. Thank you so much.

If you JUST want SPF advice then Piz Buin face or Piz Buin 'allergy' face, all the way! It's cheap, it's excellent, and it really makes my skin look great (I'm 50 and prone to very tired, aged-looking skin when I'm not looking after myself).

This one is a good moisturiser and factor 25, for all year use. Not greasy. I put a serum or vitC under it in the winter and a high factor face sunscreen over it on susceptible areas - nose, lips, wrinkles under eyes, in the summer. Nuxe and Caudalie do one.

I started off using nig standard Boots Soltan as I refused to give into the marketing of facial SPF and didn't want to pay loads for a specific product. It was way too greasy and made me break out, so I reluctantly switched Grin

I now use La Roche Posay Anthelios, the one in the rectangular bottle. I like it because its moisturising without being too greasy, it sinks in lovely and doesn't leave that awful white cast. I try and buy it on special offer wherever I can.

ginswinger · 09/03/2022 19:11

I like a lot of the Boots suncreams for the face and have played around with a few - all very similar, all good. If you want to play around with skincare but on a budget, The Ordinary is good value. They have a lot of advice about what regimes to try in what order. Avoid their SPF30 though, it's far too white for even my blonde skin. Don't give up on the SPF though, just find one for your type.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 09/03/2022 19:12

You don’t need factor 50 in the UK in March. Use a face SPF not a body lotion.

weeder · 09/03/2022 19:15

Forgot to add this - a calming tinted sunscreen/moisturiser but only if your skin is light to medium. Sometimes just wear it on its own with a dab of powder.

Solatan is shit. Greasy and sits on the skin will pill with other creams.

La roch posey is great as is Piz Bun and also at the cheaper end of the scale- Hawaiian Tropic!

Multicolouredsequins · 09/03/2022 19:22

Garnier do a nice light moisturizer, SPF 15 I think. It soaks in, is non greasy and is only £4-6. It comes in red round tub. I've tried everything else but find more expensive creams too heavy. I add suncream on bright summer days.

Hasselhoffsheadband · 09/03/2022 19:23

Oh my god, I have just re read my post upthread and it should say BOG standard Boots Soltan!!!

Luhou · 09/03/2022 19:25

Try the Bobbi Brown hydrating moisturiser. I like the No7 tinted moisturisers and foundations, and they have SPF.

Seconding Dermalogica Age Smart Factor 50

holyshitballs · 09/03/2022 19:32

If you are prone to spots/redness/rosacea you should wear an SPF with zinc in it - Image, Avene, Elave...

needhelp34 · 09/03/2022 19:33

Normal suncream is not good for your skin. I use la Roche-Posay SPF 50 for kids. Has left crap in and my children (who have eczema) respond well to it.

Movingonup22 · 09/03/2022 19:33

Sun sense is good

Welshgal85 · 09/03/2022 19:36

It may be that you’re not cleaning it off properly? Do you double cleanse?

I use garnier spf 50 face fluid. It’s so good and soaks in really well and doesn’t make you shiny. Great under make up too!

Thatsplentyjack · 09/03/2022 19:36

@MorrisZapp

You'll get loads of recommendations but they're all awful on my skin. Science isn't there yet, no matter what Sali Hughes etc say.

I don't believe they actually wear sunscreen.

I buy a new 'doesn't feel like sunscreen' every summer and I manage a couple of hours before washing it off my face.

Lots of people love eg anthelios but it all feels like emulsion paint on me.

Have you tried the cerave daytime moisturiser. Font think it's a high speed but it's the oy one I can wear without it stinging my eyes too much and not feeling all sticky and disgusting.
moonbedazzled · 09/03/2022 19:39

Do you have combination skin (oily with dry patches); or oily and dehydrated skin?

All SPFs are occlusive but many modern ones are formulated as non comedogenic, enriched moisturisers as well. So you can combine two products so less for your face to cope with. Leave it to sink in, probably 15 mins, before applying your primer. Although you may be able to dispense with primer altogether.

I use altruist beauty fluid spf 50. And for my dehydration I use a gel rather than a rich moisturiser which I would use for dry patches. I use Clinique moisture surge supetcharged concentrate for my dehydration.

I also used to like city block but I think they changed the formulation a couole of years ago. But I do like those that can be used as primers too.

pinkpirlie · 09/03/2022 19:44

I use Heliocare sunscreen. You can get a normal or a tinted one. It came highly recommended by a very good skin specialist.

This is the only thing I ever put on my face for the past 8 or so years. I don't use any other moisturiser Blush
I'm 39 with hardly any signs of aging at all.
I know I must be best lucky genetically, but that aside the only thing I can attribute to not aging it consistent use of SPF and keeping out the sun.

ChiaraRimini · 09/03/2022 19:44

Primer, moisturiser and a separate sun cream? You are putting far too much on your skin. This will be blocking your pores and making it greasy. At this time of year you do not need sunscreen if you are in UK.
Back to basics. Forget primer and sunscreen. Use a gentle cleanser, and a light moisturiser afterwards twice a day, until your skin clears up. Simple is fine. Sunscreen can wait until summer. Don't use primer except if you are wearing makeup and then be sure to double cleanse afterwards to get it all off.

OwBist · 09/03/2022 19:44

Ultrasun face spf50. They do tinted ones, too. The antipigmentation one is quite thick, but they do others which are more fluid.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 09/03/2022 19:48

I use cetaphil factor 50

bunnypenny · 09/03/2022 19:48

I use Ambre Solaire anti-aging face protection SPF50. Works well and is only £7.

VerityPJohnson · 09/03/2022 19:49

I use Eucerin oil control as have VERY skin even at 46. I use hyaluronic acid serum, then a thick moisturiser (counter intuitively) then the SPF. I then use powder foundation so that I'm not all shiny/oily, works brilliantly.

If you're worried about ageing/skin quality you should look at Dermatica. I use them too.

VerityPJohnson · 09/03/2022 19:50

*very greasy skin
