I bought a leather jacket and it stinks of smoke!

From Vinted. An All Saints one that I thought was quite a bargain, but jeez I wasn't expecting the smell to hit me before I'd even finished opening the packaging. It's pretty grim.

Looks like under Vinted's t&cs I'd be liable for return postage and it was so cheap it's not really worth it. I've hung it out in the air but is there anything else I can do? Has anyone washed a leather jacket and did it survive?

Also, AIBU to think that if your stuff is going to stink to high heaven of stale fags, you should bother to state this in the description?!

I wouldn't wash it, but you might be able to get it dry cleaned - what does it say on the label?

Otherwise, hang it out on the line for a few days (not if it's raining obvs) and see if that does the trick.

astoundedgoat · 09/03/2022 16:00

You can't wash it, but leave it out in the air for as long as possible.

Send it back! You will never get rid of that smell. Is it fire smoke or cigarette smoke? Either way it’s not acceptable.

Cigarette smoke. It's vile.

I bought a leather jacket from a charity shop that stunk of damp when I got it home.

It was Febreezed to death and hung outside for about a week but nothing shifted it. It's worth a go in the fresh air to see what happens but chances are it's ingrained.

PartyPlan · 09/03/2022 16:25

The sun helps but I would go for a refund. People are so cheeky selling things that stink. I’ve had loads that smell damp and musty Envy

Floisme · 09/03/2022 16:26

My husband machine washed one after everything else had failed. It looked wrecked when it came out of the machine but, once it had dried, it was fine. I'm not promising it'll always work but it sounds like you've nothing much to lose.

TizerorFizz · 09/03/2022 16:31

She’s got the value of the jacket to lose. Get a refund. It’s not fit to wear.

Thoosa · 09/03/2022 16:45

Try some leather balm or dubbin? Then a good airing.

ClariceQuiff · 09/03/2022 16:51

Resell it mentioning the smoke smell? I'm a smoker so it wouldn't bother me - must be other smokers with an eye for a bargain in these circumstances.

Floisme · 09/03/2022 16:51

She's already said it was so cheap it's not worth paying postage to return it.

MrsWooster · 09/03/2022 16:54

Try covering it in bicarbonate of soda for a few days. It’s pretty good at getting rid of stinks and should shake /hoover off afterwards.

Noctidiurnal · 09/03/2022 16:55

I had the exact same with a blazer that I bought from ebay that arrived smelling very strongly of cigarette smoke. I was told by someone who restores books that they use bicarbonate of soda to treat smelly books. I bought a box of it from amazon,Dri-Pak Bicarbonate of Soda

I popped it in a bin liner and added a box of bicarbonate of soda and tightly secured the bag with tape.

Shook the clothing together with the baking soda for about 2 minutes so that the baking soda has a chance to cover the jacket.

I left it in its package for just over a week.

When I took it out, I noticed that the bicarbonate of soda now smelled of smoke and my jacket did not!

I gave it a good shake to remove the soda and hung it outside for a day for good measure. I do catch a very faint whiff of smoke occasionally but its honestly pretty much gone.

Hopefully this method will also work on leather? Maybe worth a shot if it was cheap.

i washed a very heavy actual biker leather jacket once, the lining looked a bit like it had been waxed with margarine greasy

It also smelled a bit like the foostiest cupboard and although airing it out was helping with that, it was not solving the filthy lining.

I wrestled it inside out, spritzed it with vinegar spray and stain remover and let it swoosh about on a heavy items program and it came out fine, it did look like a ravelled up old handbag when it came out mind you! I wondered if the lining would rip and fray but it didn't

I had seen something online about washing vintage jackets and they heartily recommended it, but again it had been very very cheap so really no risk.

I also washed a leather sofa cushion that the dog had thrown up on and that was fine and dandy too after it had dried in the fresh air.

pitstoppop · 09/03/2022 17:13

Maybe put inside one
Of those tights bags and wash

mewkins · 09/03/2022 17:25

I've washed sheepskin rugs before and all was fine. If cheap I would risk it.

isthatanotherbastardgrey · 09/03/2022 17:46

I've washed a leather jacket too - smelt vaguely sweaty and nothing shifted it.

Looked a bit battered for a while, but it was a biker jacket, so that didn't look wrong, as such. Calmed down after a while though and was fine!

SirVixofVixHall · 09/03/2022 19:10

You can try the bicarbonate of soda suggested above, and then treat the leather. I think as a first port of call this is worth doing.
If it was a wool jacket you could wash it , and I would be tempted to try that if all else fails , but it might make the leather stiff or discoloured.

Greyhare · 09/03/2022 19:38

I'd return it, I used to smoke and whilst not clothing, I had a sideboard and even 10 years after giving up and several house moves later anything that sat in the draws of the sideboard stunk of stale smoke, once it's engrained it never comes out.

Isabelle70 · 09/03/2022 19:47

I have seen this recommended on a Mulberry Facebook group a few times, worth a try?

justbegoodforme · 09/03/2022 19:53

Do not keep it! Send it back.

I once bought a leather armchair that stank of cigarette smoke. I did everything by way of cleaning but the best thing was sunshine. However, it took months for the smell to subside. Never again.

Get rid.

70sDuvet · 09/03/2022 21:16

I used the hand sanitiser spray, the ones with a high alcohol percentage to get rid of that nasty chemical smell off a cheap wool coat.

I sprayed it all over and hung it outside to air for a few days. It worked.

I then tried the same on a vintage leather jacket that I've owned for years but had been improperly stored and stank of mould. Sprayed it and hung outside and repeated daily for about a week. It worked and there is no smell at all. Previously this jacket had been in its own plastic storage box in the attic as it smelt so bad, but I couldn't bear to get rid of it as it was so special to me

SoLongFurlough · 09/03/2022 21:16

Charity shop worker here -I have washed an All Saints leather jacket with excellent results. Lingerie bag with a small amount of delicate wash liquid & the shortest cycle (no spin).
TBH this might not even be enough to get the smoke smell out so it depends how cheap it was as to wether you want to try or not - I would!

gunnersgold · 09/03/2022 21:20

Bung it in the wash , I've washed leather jackets before . You need to dry it out on a sunny day but not in direct heat . Dry cleaning will cost you around £50 .

evilharpy · 09/03/2022 21:32

Well it was only £20 so not the end of the world if I ruin it, but I do like it (apart from the smell!) and would quite like to save it if I can.

Think I'll try the bicarb first and if that fails I'll throw it on a delicate cycle in a net bag.
