I bought a leather jacket and it stinks of smoke!

From Vinted. An All Saints one that I thought was quite a bargain, but jeez I wasn't expecting the smell to hit me before I'd even finished opening the packaging. It's pretty grim.

Looks like under Vinted's t&cs I'd be liable for return postage and it was so cheap it's not really worth it. I've hung it out in the air but is there anything else I can do? Has anyone washed a leather jacket and did it survive?

Also, AIBU to think that if your stuff is going to stink to high heaven of stale fags, you should bother to state this in the description?!

I washed a patent leather Lulu Guinness handbag, it smelt like it had been stored somewhere horrible and damp. I actually washed it a few times, first time on a quick wash, it came out okay, then I felt all brave and gave it a proper wash. Once it wash dry I sprayed the lining with some lavender essential oil and it was fine.

evilharpy · 10/03/2022 08:08

Oh god I'm so tempted to just go and throw it in the wash now!

Don't worry about the net bag , it will be the drying that ruins it if anything . Turn it inside out and zip or bottom it up so you don't get drum marks on the leather after it spins .

There are a lot of handbag groups on Facebook that suggest various ways from memory (I'm not on there anymore so can't look for you) try googling getting smells out of a leather handbag, it may throw up something slightly different.

Allaboutyou222 · 10/03/2022 09:11

How awful to sell it in that condition.

I bought a fake fur jacket once. The armpits stank of sweat 🤮

NewYearCalavicci · 10/03/2022 09:24

O have washed a leather jacket too ,
Mine was second hand about 10 years ago so it's seen a lot of wear and was smelly .
I tried hanging outside for a few days which helped but it still smelt so I washed it on a cool short wash

I thought I'd killed it when I took it out of the washer ! But one it was dry ( took days ) and I had oiled it it was fine .

BusterGonad · 10/03/2022 09:30

And I dried the inside with a hairdryer on a low heat. Afterwards a rubbed a scented oil into the leather to help it stay supple and to make it smell good. But maybe wouldn't recommend that with normal leather.

ChickenStripper · 10/03/2022 09:32

How cheap is cheap?

Mrsjayy · 10/03/2022 09:36

You can wash leather jackets at 30 put some white vinegar in the softener compartment. Try rubbing it down with tumble dryer sheets I saw that on a hack thing about getting rid of smells

Would I even spin it? I was assuming delicate cycle and no spin.

What did you oil it with?

Mrsjayy · 10/03/2022 09:53

Yes you can spin it low put it in a pillow case or duvet cover.

Mrsjayy · 10/03/2022 09:54

Spin on a low setting*

BusterGonad · 10/03/2022 10:59

I oiled my bag with a facial oil! 😬😁

gunnersgold · 10/03/2022 11:01

You would need to spin it otherwise it will be too wet and won't dry quick enough which will make the skin smell even worse . Spinning won't hurt it , as I said above dry it on a windy sunny day but not in direct heat as it will dry hard .
Saddle soap is good if it does go hard but that's Smells too

AHungryCaterpillar · 10/03/2022 11:02

Smoker seem to be in denial about how much it smells so maybe she doesn’t realise, I would return it

MrsMoastyToasty · 10/03/2022 11:04

Have you tried cleaning it with baby wipes?

NewYearCalavicci · 10/03/2022 13:32

@evilharpy ,
I oil all my leather with Carr Day and Martin oil ( the one in the orange tin ) it's more aimed towards oiling horse tack but I've used on all sorts of leathers in the past just be aware it may make it a bit darker but then everything is very supple and waterproof.

Apply it sparingly with a soft cloth and give it a few days to soak in properly .

One tin will last you a very long time !

evilharpy · 10/03/2022 14:25

@MrsMoastyToasty

Oh it's way beyond that stage! It's permeated the lining too.

The seller should have mentioned it. But for £20 I’d take a punt on washing the jacket, if you like the style.

I sent back a vinted dress because it smelled damp, as if it had been stored in bin bags in a garage. Nothing is getting that smell out!

NewYearCalavicci · 10/03/2022 15:36

Ps
The oil will soak in better / faster if the coat is warm so put it on and get someone else to oil it .
Coat gets oiled you get a gentle massage win - win 😄

ThisBloodyNoiseInMyHead · 10/03/2022 15:59

Leather-cleaning wipes? The type used for settees etc. Then Febreze?

Isabelle70 · 10/03/2022 18:04

If you are going to wash it, be careful when it's wet as the leather will stretch. I washed a Mulberry Bayswater handbag in the kitchen sink and stretched the handles by hanging it by them on the washing line!
I think for £20 I would give it a wash in the sink, roll it in towels to remove the excess water and then lightly stuff to dry, changing the paper or towels as it dries.
I use Collonil gel on handbags to put some moisture back in.
You could also try sealing it in a bag with charcoal deodorisers?
