Dryrobe- worth the money?

Are dryrobes worth the money?

Fairly keen beach goer (don't typically go in water outwith summer months)

thank you

I prefer my swimzi. Nice shape at the back. Logo isn’t sprawled across it and you can pull the waist in for a bit of shape!

NuffSaidSam · 07/03/2022 14:08

The sea swimmers I know love them, but they swim pretty much year round so less general beach wear and more proper equipment needed. I imagine for being on the beach in the summer something cheaper would do the job just as well.

Luckystar1 · 07/03/2022 14:09

I have one. It’s amazing. I absolutely love it. I wear it daily just as a normal coat. It’s great for watching the children’s sport too, and wrapping them in it.

Billybagpuss · 07/03/2022 14:14

I’m lake swimming at the moment, temperatures as low as 3 degrees. I wouldn’t be without it. But in the summer other than to hide under while I’m changing, I don’t wear it very much. I bought it several years ago and only started winter swimming this year. It’s now used multiple times a week, but prior to this hardly used at all.

70sDuvet · 07/03/2022 19:22

100% yes!
Especially if you are a cold person. I wear mine after swimming/surfing.
Watching DC play at the beach/park I can fold myself into mine and be like a windproof bundle and be happy to stay for hours
For outdoor drinks when the sun goes down and its cold standing around
This past while, when in the house alone and not wanting to put the heating on just for me, tighten the sleeves and it's perfect to type in etc.

DH has a sola one which is just as good but was about £80 compared to my £150 - but mine is camo and pink and his is black so mine wins Grin

LazyDoll · 07/03/2022 19:31

Nah. Hoody, hat and a coat and you’re good to go. Bulky and limited use as far as I can see. I like to walk and swim where I see a nice spot so wouldn’t work for me.

MrsMigginsCat · 07/03/2022 19:33

I bought one when they had a half price glitch a few weeks ago. It's massive but as I've just started cold water sea swimming I figured that it'll be perfect for snuggling up into afterwards. We camp so it will be great for the middle of the night trek to the loo as well. I paid £80, not sure I'd have paid £160 though! Mine's camo and pink too.

LazyDoll · 07/03/2022 19:33

I also lake swim weekly (was in 2° now 7°) but think they’re a bit gimmicky. I just get dry and pull clothes on as quick as possible (and then stuff a hot water bottle down my top!).

CMOTDibbler · 07/03/2022 19:38

I have a Charlie McLeod and a SmocSmoc change robe. Absolutely fantastic through winter swimming and the beginning/end of the season (so mine are used a lot September to May/June). But the rest of the year I use a heavy weight cotton towelling change robe as it is more practical in terms of changing and getting dry, though my full on robe coats do go camping with us.

DetailMouse · 07/03/2022 19:41

I run and all of a sudden, this winter they're everywhere, even after parkrun a good 30% seem to have them.

I also go to football regularly and whilst they do seem very warm, they're not very wearable outside certain specific circumstances. I'm wondering if this SeaSalt equivalent night be a good alternative?

I do think a really good coat that does what it's supposed to is life changing.

WholeHog · 07/03/2022 19:44

I saw someone wearing one (over clothes) in the supermarket, they looked really happy!

RishiRich · 07/03/2022 19:52

I'm wearing one right now at DS' football practice 🥶 It's brilliant for cold weather or tes when you need to warm up quickly. I just use a towel poncho for swimming in the summer though.

EdgeOfSeventeenAndThreeQuarter · 07/03/2022 19:55

Totally overrated. I’ve got one (pre-covid prices…) and it does exactly the same job as a Charlie McLeod.

Amelion · 07/03/2022 20:06

I have one but it’s most useful for (a) changing when you don’t have anywhere private and (b) to keep warm while you get changed. I’m not sure I’d buy one just for beach visits in the summer tbh.

bruffin · 07/03/2022 20:10

All the parents at watching the kids kayak at Lea Valley were wearing them and they weren't even getting wet , they may give the to the DC when they get out of the water

JohnNutLips · 07/03/2022 20:13

I’ve been using mine for the last 4-5 years and have recently found myself using it less and less - it’s very bulky and I find it quicker to change without it. It gets limited use now for changing in wind and rain only. You’d be better with a towelling poncho for beach days.

OverByYer · 07/03/2022 20:17

I think worth investing if you do water based sport all year around.
I paddle board but only in warmer weather and find an adult poncho towel (mines from decathlon) does the job for me at a quarter of the price.
I bought my brother a cheaper brand of Dry Robe , I do think you are paying for the name.
If you are only buying one to wear as a coat, you'd be better buying a decent full length puffer coat.

Harridan1981 · 07/03/2022 21:12

I have a rapanui changing hoodie which I love. But it is only used for beach changes and hanging out really.

Ooh I umm and ahh about whether to buy one. (I'm mainly a runner rather than mainly a swimmer)

Can I ask a couple of questions please?

If you change in it (from a wet costume) does it make the lining all wet to wear afterwards when you have dry clothes on?

How do you dry it out / or wash and dry it

Also @MrsMigginsCat how did you know they were 50% off, is this a regular thing?

MrsMigginsCat · 07/03/2022 22:26

No @RelentlessForwardProgress it was a glitch on their website a couple of weeks ago. There was a code floating around that halves the price of everything. I found it from a camping FB group I'm in. They must have sold hundreds but fair play to DryRobe, even though it was an error, they honoured all the orders. I don't think they usually reduce them though.

RelentlessForwardProgress · 07/03/2022 22:33

That sounds like you were destined to get one @MrsMigginsCat Smile

Arucanafeather · 07/03/2022 22:38

Two bare feet do a good version… cheaper and the lining isn’t wool for those like me who react to wool. Great for wild water swimming… and even use them to go home and bath after pool swimming (I soak in an eczema soothing bath additive after swimming so great to not have to get dressed twice). Also great after long runs to drive home.

RelentlessForwardProgress · 07/03/2022 22:43

@Arucanafeather, its for after long runs I'm interested, but I can't quite figure it out. Do you just put it on top of your kit, if so does it not get really sweaty smelling and have to be washed every time?

bassackwards · 07/03/2022 22:53

Ooh I'm looking for something to keep me warm on the Cornish coast in April. But these seem really pricey...
