Are dryrobes worth the money?

Fairly keen beach goer (don't typically go in water outwith summer months)

thank you

Everyday athlete has some comparison videos
There are cheaper makes

Billybagpuss · 08/03/2022 05:06

A couple of pps asked about it getting wet and smelly. It really doesn’t it’s designed to dry you too. It seriously is a quality piece of clothing and you will never need another. But I bought mine when they were still very new and only available in black and half the price.

RishiRich · 08/03/2022 08:20

I got mine for free by marshalling for a day at Nuclear Races. If you're anywhere near Brentwood in Essex then it's a good deal!

Trixiefirecracker · 08/03/2022 08:24

I have both and actually prefer my gorilla robe one. I swim a lot so they are very useful but not in summer! Way too hot to wear.

Iamanunsafebuilding · 08/03/2022 08:30

I bought one about 3 years ago and I love it. I spend a lot of t9me outdoors and I use mine for dog-walking, parkrun marshalling, winter gardening. It's long enough that my legs don't get wet on rainy dog walks. They don't get smelly, they are designed to dry out. There are videos on their fb that explain why.

Best £160 I spent!

'Half price glitch' !!

I never catch these things

nettersrunboulder86 · 08/03/2022 20:06

@RelentlessForwardProgress I have an Alpkit one. I use it to get changed after long runs. It's good for getting changed without flashing. I tend to get completely changed under it then leave it on to warm up on the journey home as I get super cold if I leave sweaty gear on.

SkiRun0077 · 08/03/2022 20:17

I have a two bare feet one but only use it rarely after cold water swimming as I prefer to get changed quickly with towel poncho (it’s easier!)… I’m fully dressed whilst my dry robe mates are still wiggly around in theres Grin my kids nick it now to wear after swim training or I’ve used it if sitting somewhere outside for long time. But generally I think they are over rated.

MartyDoc · 08/03/2022 20:20

They are good but Gorilla robe much cheaper and still great! I sea swim through winter and prefer the gorilla robe as I stick it over my head (it’s a half zip) my cold fingers can’t always manage full zip of dry robe.

XingMing · 08/03/2022 20:38

I don't have one, because I don't do wild swimming but first saw them when DS did Devizes-Westminster 5 years ago, and I grasped the point when DS was at the brink of hypothermia.

whirlygirl · 08/03/2022 21:57

Where I live there is an increasing trend to wear them in town as coats. They look ridiculous.

I have a towelling version which was a fraction of the price, same brand. It does the job fine.

I have an Osprey one. I do actually swim in the sea all year round so thought it would be good for keeping warm while getting changed but to be honest it's still quicker and easier to get changed quickly under my towel robe, even now in winter.
Personally I would just invest in a really good, absorbent towel robe and just put on a warm duvet coat once dry and dressed. They are incredibly waterproof though and I have found it to be a very good at keeping me completely dry while out in the rain as it's much longer than a traditional raincoat. They are really warm and cosy as well.

SharonMack17 · 09/03/2022 00:30

Yes! I LOVE mine (a Charlie McLeod) and so do my friends (Dryrobes)! But we do swim regularly throughout the winter. They're fab for changing without flashing too much and also for sitting chatting afterwards

mozzrules · 09/03/2022 00:48

I love my Dryrobe - it was my lockdown present to myself and worth every penny. Second year of swimming outdoors through the winter and it keeps me warm and dry and makes it so easy to get changed outside. If it's raining you can fold clothes under it while you swim and they stay completely dry. To those who asked, the lining stays dry even when you dry yourself on it and it doesn't get damp or smelly. If you're going to swim outside in winter it's definitely worth it.

I agree they look stupid out of context.

The only time I wore mine as a coat I got to where I walk the dog and the heavens opened. It was all I had in the car. It was way too hot walking in it not having swam first.

Arucanafeather · 09/03/2022 13:20
@Arucanafeather, its for after long runs I'm interested, but I can't quite figure it out. Do you just put it on top of your kit, if so does it not get really sweaty smelling and have to be washed every time?
Surprisingly doesn’t get smelly (or not that I’ve noticed Grin) so I wash it a lot less often than I thought I would. And I’m usually a bing everything I’ve run into the wash even if it’s a jumper that’s just been tied round my waist as sweat aggregates my eczema. For me, it’s been worth every penny.

Arucanafeather · 09/03/2022 13:21

…to continue… most useful when you’ve run in wet cold weather. Instead of going home cold and wet or changing to go home… bung the robe on and your warm and snuggly and can get out of the wet clothes when you get home. Do the same whether running or wild swimming.

Following this thread with interest and have searched up more or less all the suggestions on this thread.

But is there any type of changing robe out there, that has the waterproof-type external layer and fluffy inside, that does NOT have a giant logo all over it, like you are their advertising banner?

Arucanafeather · 14/03/2022 14:18

Ha ha! No I don’t think so. It’s on the back though so I just don’t worry about it.

I'm seriously considering this www.seasaltcornwall.com/exploring-waterproof-oversized-coat for exactly that reason. If it had the velcro on the sleeves I'd have already bought it...
