What beauty things are you now doing at home?

To save money (topical at the minute), I've started doing my own waxing and am delighted that it is going so well. Not sure why I've been paying for it and quite a lot of money too.

I've started doing my own nails. Not gels, although I removed them myself with some special removed stuff, (the whole bottle was cheaper than one removal at my salon). I'm just doing mine with normal nail polish with a good top coat and it is lasting fine. Doing my own cuticle work as well with pusher and cuticle remover liquid.

The only thing I'm going to not do myself is pedicures when summer rolls around. I hate doing my own feet!

Also cutting down a lot on hair stuff. No more colouring. Just a trim every few-6 months

I wax and dye my own eyebrows now, easy! I do my own pedicures. I also do polygel nails myself now, its simples. I also do gels myself but they are tricky to remove so don't do them as much.

SoberSerena · 03/03/2022 10:46

Interesting!

I am genuinely amazed at how well my diy beauty stuff has gone. I've been paying unnecessarily for years and I've never especially enjoyed the experience either. I waxed my lip and chin (sexy) recently and I swear I did a better job than at the salon and no bad reaction to it either.

Cutting my hair!
Admittedly it's dead straight and not very thick, but I watched a few youtube tutorials and l'm happy with the results.

Darklane · 03/03/2022 12:07

Everything.
Can’t remember the last time I visited a hairdresser but mines easy, shoulder length bob that curls at the ends, very forgiving.
Never visited a beauty salon or naibar, I’m very DIY Grin & always done everything myself, mind you I live in the back of beyond so easier than trying to find such third party pampering

MrsTxx · 03/03/2022 14:23

I got a gel nail kit from the MIL for Christmas and I’m really enjoying taking the time out to do my own nails! Finding I’m getting better at it each go. I also trim my own hair and apply my own individual lashes and have done since the start of the pandemic

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 03/03/2022 15:06

I’ve been trying to cut my own hair the last few times. It should be simple, I don’t have a difficult hair texture, I have proper scissors and have good mobility and dexterity but every time it just looks like what it is, a ropey home hair cut. I need to book a hair cut with a trained person, YouTube (literally) just isn’t cutting it.

SoberSerena · 03/03/2022 15:25

I've not braved cutting my own hair yet. Dh did it for me once during lockdown, but I ended up with a very mushroom shaped head! Wasn't the best look...

I am hugely cutting back on frequency of my hair cuts though and don't think I'll go back to my usual salon as it's so expensive now! Will go to the cheapest one in town for a trim. I've grown it to shoulder length so shouldn't need much maintenance really

I've been tinting my brows and lashes for years. I've bought a lash lift kit from amazon but haven't been brave enough to do it yet.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 03/03/2022 15:38

@SoberSerena, Grin DH did mine over lockdown too. It was unintentionally asymmetrical, lets just put it that way Shock. Honestly his efforts make mine look like Nicky Clarke’s finest.

JerkintheMerkin · 03/03/2022 15:41

@SoberSerena what topcoat do you use?

SoberSerena · 03/03/2022 15:47
@SoberSerena what topcoat do you use?
It is a Sally Hansen one called insta-dry or something like that.

I do my own brows, nails and facials now. The only thing I get done professionally is my hair as my hairdresser isolates for 3 days and tests before doing my hair.

Dogmum40 · 03/03/2022 15:59

I’d be interested in those of you that do your own gel nails as I had took mine off during the pandemic in 2020 and haven’t had them back on since.

I really miss them but not missing the £30 every 3 weeks and sitting there making small talk! Is it easy to do yourself? Is there some kind of kit you need to buy? I’ve seen stuff on Amazon but unless I’ve seen or heard anyone who’s been doing it themselves so I’ve not bothered as it needs to be really simple for me as I’m not remotely into beauty! I dry my hair straight and thats about it 😆

HowIsItMarchAlready · 03/03/2022 16:01

I'm too scared to wax my own eyebrows! What products do those of you who DIY it, use please?

lindyloo57 · 03/03/2022 18:35

I now since covid trim my own hair, its straight with a few front layers, jen aniston style, I also follow some YouTube tutorials, and I put a few highlights in too.

isthismylifenow · 03/03/2022 18:58

I eplilate now, I wanted to get an ipl but I am too fair. It is not as bad as I expected it to be. To be fair I have only done my legs.

Haven't been for a wax in 2 years. Just do a short back and sides trim instead of a Brazilian. I doubt I will ever go back to doing to again.

Do one nails, fingers and toes. None of this fancy stuff though, just normal nail polish. Colour if there is an occasion, otherwise just short with clear polish.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 03/03/2022 19:00

Phillips lumea for hair removal. Life changing. My legs haven't been shaved for a month and are still smooth. Fantastic for bikini line too.

Isgooglebroken · 03/03/2022 19:04

@HowIsItMarchAlready I just use nair facial wax strips. I cut them in a rough shape then a very, very thin layer of baby powder practically all rubbed off again (so the strip sticks to the hair not the skin) then pluck the few stragglers that are left. Much less dangerous than hot wax. I nearly pull half an eyebrow off when I tried to use that! The pre shaped brow wax strips are rubbish btw.

I’ve been cutting my own hair since lockdown 1.
It’s long and has layers so it’s fine. I keep telling myself I will treat myself to a proper tidy up but my hairdresser has closed down & whenever I go to a new place I’m never happy with the results so I may want we’ll do it myself.

Back21970 · 04/03/2022 18:00

I also bought a lash lift kit from Amazon 18 months ago and am too scared to try it! Need to dig it out in case it expires and at least read the instructions. Was always a bit disappointed when I got lash lifts in a salon - thought the lash perms were better but no one seems to do them now. Bought some individual magnetic false lashes and gong to give them a try soon as found getting extensions in a salon a bit hit and miss as well as expensive. Sometimes can’t believe how much I used to spend on Salon visits pre pandemic!

OverByYer · 04/03/2022 18:05

I’ve always done my own nails and epilate leg hair so am quite low maintenance but I do get my hair cut and coloured at the salon.

Ohmygodyesthatsit · 05/03/2022 11:23

@Back21970 if you preferred lash perms try using the small shield most lash lifts are done on a medium shield the small shield gives more lift and curl but if you have very long lashes be careful they dont curk onto your lids.

SoberSerena · 05/03/2022 11:32

I don't do my eyebrows at home, but I do my lip and chin and also legs and bikini line. I've been using one by Veet I think. It's called something like Oriental Wax. It's great. Stick the whole tub in the microwave and go for it. Not sure if you can use it on brows though

MN introduced me to Dyebrow last year and I.a convert!

WouldIBeATwat · 05/03/2022 21:40

Been doing my own lash lifts for about 2 years now. Used to cost me £30 every 4 weeks (and she insisted on using the small shields which over curled my lashes.

Paid about £22 for a kit and do it myself now. Takes longer but I get a better outcome.

Elodie9 · 05/03/2022 21:48

I pluck my eyebrows instead of a salon wax and I hate doing it. No more manicures and no more hair colour, i am becoming a silver sister.
