NC for this, can't be too careful!

I've had my long hair chopped and DH says I've got an old lady 'do 🙄 (offensive I know!). Is it terrible? Pic hopefully attached...

It is the length older lady's have their hair but yours looks decently thick and you still look youthful. Ignore him, I think it looks great!

Your DH has a nerve! Well, I'm no expert (have just posted my own clueless hair thread), but I'd say it might look a bit more youthful if it was in beachy waves, that kind of thing, rather than super straight and going inwards at the bottom. That's if looking on-trend matters to you, I guess. How do you feel about it?

It's a really good haircut. I wouldn't call it old lady but it's also not a particularly youthful look either. All in all,I think it looks nice.

It’s not terrible, but depends on your style. I don’t I don’t think it looks very youthful or trendy if paired with a seasalt and fatface horizontal stripes, florals and knit wardrobe.

I think to carry off a bob and look more stylish- you need a pretty edgy style- leather jackets, minimalist jewellery, all saints slip dresses, on-trend cut jeans, sneakers, chunky boots….etc etc

Thanks! I suppose I feel unsure, as otherwise I would have just brushed his remarks off rather than asking on here.

I wouldn't say I'm edgy as such but there are no skinnies or Bretons to be found in my wardrobe! I'm into cropped, wide leg trousers and shirt dresses at the moment.

An older friend suggested I cut my long witchy hair into a bob. Only the once.
I laughed and said No chance.

Your hair is nicely cut but would look better with a slight wave and I'd avoid the 'back of the colour supplement' outfits

It will grow back

I personally don't like bobs , you do need to roughy it up a bit to get those pics though . Have you got some straighteners to give it some wave ? I think most men prefer messy natural hair rather than over 'coiffed ' which it is because you have just left the hairdressers .

For reference I showed the hairdresser these pictures:

Aaaahhh. I see. She hasn’t really followed your brief. Needs to be choppier, more texture at the front and I would have expected her to have blow dried it with a slight wave to give you the look you want.

The obvious c framing of the face looks quite dated, and it looks a bit like it’s been graduated at the back.

Just needs some texture, add some loose curls and/or try some texturising spray to make it look a bit messy! You hair is nice, doesn't give me old lady vibes at all!

You have lovely hair. Thick but not too thick and glossy. I'm not loving the bob though. It's kind of neither here nor there. Scruffle it up and put some texture in it, grow it and change your hairdresser!

Thanks for the advice, I'm hoping a bit of styling will improve things. Re changing hairdresser, it's the first time I've been to her and she's a friend of a friend so it could get a bit awkward Blush How do you get them to do what you actually want??

I think the problem is that our hair has a tendency to turn inwards when cut into a bob and that gives the untrendy bubble look.

Report

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 24/02/2022 18:42

OP you have the same cut as the photo on the left ,it's just been styled differently. Tuck it behind your ear and rough it up a bit with styling cream. Dry it yourself, it'll look very different when you do it yourself. My hair looks nothing like mine when I get it dried Grin

I had mine cut into a bob with longer hair at the front about 5 weeks ago....... it's been an utter disaster as I can't keep the shape. I can blow dry and it's sat perfect, then half an hour later I look like Wurzel Gummidge.

Yours won't look like that when you've washed it yourself, so don't worry, and will be much choppier/natural. You've got lovely thick hair...... I personally think long hair can be much more ageing than short, especially when it's thin hair.

LizDoingTheCanCan · 24/02/2022 18:48

It's a versatile cut, you can do so much with it. Hairdressers like to do the tucking under thing, run the straighteners through it and it will look more sleek.

As for your husband, did he mean to be nasty? Let him know the internet thinks he's a dick.

Iamnotamermaid · 24/02/2022 18:51

You sort have what you asked for but she has made it more of a smooth layered bob rather than a choppy one with blunt ends.

Give it a couple of weeks, style it in a rougher style and maybe try a different hairdresser next time. My rule of thumb with hairdressers is that you have to like hairstyle they have - as that is roughly what you will get. Once it grows a bit you can get it adjusted.

Report

Creeeper · 24/02/2022 19:03

It could be styled in a bit more of a choppy way to match the photos you showed to the hairdresser

Don't waste your time feeling awkward. Just move on. Come up with some bullshit if necessary but your hair is too important to put up with a mediocre hairdresser.

KirstenBlest · 24/02/2022 20:28

@Hairchange, if you have only just had it done, give it a few weeks. A good bob is a tricky cut, so you will know if the hairdresser is good or not.

I gave up trying to get hairdressers to do what I wanted ages ago. They cut hair for a living and I don't. I just ask them to suggest a style.
I always go to the same one and have every faith in him.

You have lovely hair. It just needs to be roughed up a bit!
I have a jaw length blonde straight bob with no layers at all. I personally find layers are really aging on me, but I have lots of hair.
I definitely look younger with a bob than with long hair so personally do not agree with the bobs putting years on you

Haha, he's not known for his tact! He's read the comments on here and conceded that you all know how to talk hair better than he does Grin
