Want to look stylish on long haul flight

Know it's all about comfort but I'm flying on my own without my kids and want to feel a bit special as well as comfy.

One way was somehow cheaper for business class.... so I need to look the part.......

Any suggestions - with pictures/links would be great!

I have a wonderful friend who is loaning me her Louis Vuitton flight bag and Pochette, so my bags are sorted and I have new veja trainers - so footwear is fine too.

Why are you all taking pashminas and wraps?

In business and first you get blankets if you’re cold. I’ve never, ever needed a wrap, partly because the cabin is always roasting. Most of the time I end up nearly down to a vest top overnight.

(OP I’m hoping to fly at the front of the plane this morning assuming BA sorts itself out & I’m wearing wide legged jersey pants, jersey long sleeve top and a calf length parka for the other end. No fancy handbags, just my usual luggage).

Porridge you're right, a pashmina isn't needed. I guess I just added it to my list as I have one that folds up very small and is handy just to have in my bag. I chuck it in for any plane journey.

When I've flown BC I go in a comfy dress then get changed into proper comfy clothes once we've taken off. There are people in all sorts though

RampantIvy · 26/02/2022 09:45

so I was thinking pleather leggings

That would be a no from me as well. Won't you get rather sweaty?
I have some black wide leg stretchy trousers that don't look like stretchy trousers, and are really comfortable and smart looking.

I find the aircon in planes too cold so I always go for layers and take a scarf to wrap round me. My feet always get cold so I take warm socks as well.

DH used to regularly fly business class long haul, and he said that fellow passengers would be in business attire if they were going straight to meetings, or in jeans and shirt/polo shirt like him. I doubt that he would have noticed what the women were wearing.

As everyone else has said, just wear what you would find comfortable.

@procrastinationstations

Thanks for the replies - I'm really into clothes and it's part of the excitement for me, so I'd really like to make an effort - for myself! I obv want to be comfy - so I was thinking pleather leggings and a sweater? I think (I haven't flown for so long) it's cold on the plane???
Maybe not pleather, if it's warm on board you'll be will be very uncomfortable. I like an oversized t shirt, cashmere jumper and big scarf/pashmina - it doubles up as a blanket. Or if going somewhere with a warm climate, a tunic type dress with leggings, you can whip them off at any time if you get too warm. Most people at the pointy end haven't paid for it themselves so don't care, get to the lounge with time to enjoy it 🙂

I like my own, I don't like the fabric of the airline blankets. And I found a hair on one many years ago....

I forgot to say a facial spray, for the dry air, not clothes but helpful. You'll get a pack with moisturiser/lip balm etc in so don't worry to much about taking it.

Flight home from Jamaica last week was so warm. Flight out was cooler.

Varies hugely so you need an outfit which is comfortable but can be appropriate for cold or warm - layers.

I can only imagine that pleather would be horrible to wear for a long flight!

Mind you I go for comfort rather than style on long haul flights.

And the only business class flight I did - again cheaper than the remaining economy seats - almost everyone was dressed the same as in economy with comfort being the overriding factor. There were a couple of men in business suits but everyone else were just dressed normally.

@dudsville

OP, I also enjoy making an effort when out (why wouldn't that include travel?!). For my last flight I wore a gorgeous soft cotton dress with a nice print. It was midi length, and airport style and silhouette but was bit a wrap so I didn't have to worry, and it was loose about the tummy and I had leggings that stopped just before the knee. I'll see if I can find a pic.
What does ‘airport style and silhouette’ mean here?
violetbunny · 26/02/2022 10:20

I once flew to Tokyo from Auckland and it was baking hot on the plane, i was so hot I ended up asking cabin crew for a giant bottle of water as the little cups they kept pouring weren't enough. Definitely go for layers!

It depends which airline you're flying with. BA are notorious for cranking the heating up (and insisting the blinds are closed) so everyone will fall asleep even during daytime flights whereas Cathay like an ice cold cabin.

I prefer to take my own pashmina rather than use the provided blanket in most cases as my own one is better quality. If it's cold, I use my pashmina with the airline blanket on top. And in Covid times, lots of people are choosing to avoid airline blankets all together.

Porridgeislife · 26/02/2022 11:20

Hmm. I’ve flown virtually every flagship carrier long haul as I live on the opposite side of the world to my family. Cathay is my preferred airline for that trip & I wouldn’t call their cabins icy.

Airline blankets are put through a heavily sanitised wash cycle. Unless you’re also eschewing using the cutlery and bedding then it’s a bit of a false economy.

I used to live in Hong Kong so Cathay was my airline for both work and pleasure. I flew at least twice a month for quite a few years. I was cold every single flight whether in first or business. Perhaps I feel the cold more than you.

Seems some posters are just here to criticise other posters rather than offer the OP any helpful suggestions.
