Want to look stylish on long haul flight

procrastinationstations · 23/02/2022 17:07

Know it's all about comfort but I'm flying on my own without my kids and want to feel a bit special as well as comfy.

One way was somehow cheaper for business class.... so I need to look the part.......

Any suggestions - with pictures/links would be great!

I have a wonderful friend who is loaning me her Louis Vuitton flight bag and Pochette, so my bags are sorted and I have new veja trainers - so footwear is fine too.

Who are you flying with, what time of day is the flight, how long is the flight, from/to?

All these make a difference as to what I would wear, hot to cold weather or vice versa, night flight (change of clothes not all airlines provide pjs amenity packs dependant on day/night) and so on!

I regularly fly on my own in business and have a routine when flying.

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/02/2022 06:41

@midsomermurderess

Why are some people suddenly so concerned about this? There have been 2 very long threads about what to wear in business class recently. Search for those.
I think it’s a post lockdown thing!

I’d just avoid pleather leggings OP - that sounds very uncomfortable.

Weesiewoo · 25/02/2022 06:46

Pleather leggings long haul? That's a no from me.
Your fanny will be slow cooked by the time you get to your destination 😜

@HundredMilesAnHour

I flew back in First from California last week and wore:

Camel wool oversized blazer (designed by a friend)
Black pleather leggings from Asos ( I use thse for flying a LOT)
Black James Perse T-shirt, under a black Issey Miyake Pleats Please huge polo neck jumper
Black leather combat boots (zip on and off) that I changed into grey cashmere (Vivi Venezia) slippers after take-off
PLUS
a black silk/cashmere pashmina (it's silk on one side, cashmere on the other - cooling or warming depending on which side is next to your skin)
I always take my own travel size feather pillow & black silk pillowcase

Everything is planned around being comfy and practical so layers for hot / cold and black to hide dirt / spills but also still chic.

If you say which airline, we can give you better advice on what they'll provide (hand cream, face spritz, eye cream ,etc - or very little depending on who you fly with).

Love the sound of the double sided pashmina - could you tell us where it’s from, did a quick Google but couldn’t find anything similar. Thanks

@ceeveebee It's from Kokoon Silks in Bali. They do ship internationally though.

I have tons of silk scarves etc from them. The quality is amazing.

I'd go for a cotton/suprima jersey top in a block colour, whatever trousers feel super comfortable around the waist as you will be sitting for a long time, and then for glamour a long cashmere cardigan and cashmere wrap to layer on top. I'm always freezing on planes. Slip on shoes, so you can slip them off and wriggle your toes.

Some (and note SOME) of the Asos ones are great. Very lightweight, very comfy and actually breathable. Possibly because they've been washed a gazillion times and I use them for everything from dressing up to crawling around animal pens cleaning up fox poo. Grin

This season's Asos leggings seem to be super plasticky though. Definitely wouldn't travel in those, it'd be like sitting in a very fitted freezer bag. Wink

PollyPage · 25/02/2022 10:45

I have 2 faithful DKNY lounge suits which I wear with Gucci miles and scarf.

Grasping · 25/02/2022 10:52

I fly long haul business class about 6 round trips a year (pre pandemic)

It’s sometimes cold, sometimes hot. You need no hard, stiff clothing or tight waistbands. Pull on trousers, layers.
In my bag I carry cashmere socks so I can slip my shoes off, flip flops for popping to the loo and a wrap or poncho type thing, which has multiple uses.

dudsville · 25/02/2022 11:08

OP, I also enjoy making an effort when out (why wouldn't that include travel?!). For my last flight I wore a gorgeous soft cotton dress with a nice print. It was midi length, and airport style and silhouette but was bit a wrap so I didn't have to worry, and it was loose about the tummy and I had leggings that stopped just before the knee. I'll see if I can find a pic.

I agree with others saying wear what you fancy! It does also depend on where you’re going, will it be warm when you get off the plane?

My last flight feels a million years ago! But I wore lulu lemon leggings, plain strap top, with a thin jumper and front zip hoody-but it was cold leaving and warm on arrival so I wanted to be able to just wear my strap top.

I very rarely see people properly dressed, usually they’re in 2 piece tracksuits/loungewear or leggings and hoody.

I’m always cold on the plane to take thick socks for the journey. I probably wouldn’t go for pleather leggings to be honest, they don’t sound comfy! Spanx do nice coated leggings that are leather effect that are comfy if you like that style.

Also your pochette will be great for your passport, card holder and phone, but what shape is the other bag? Just because I know the speedy is designed for travelling but I find it such an inconvenient shape! Neverfull would is great (I know a lot of people don’t like it!) or any other tote bag!

Hope you have a good trip ✈️

Happy36 · 25/02/2022 11:21

Not too much booze, plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Hydrating face mask the night before and mini hand cream in your bag.

Have a safe flight!

LizDoingTheCanCan · 25/02/2022 11:49

Don't take your friend's bag if you're going to be worried about damaging it. That, and it's a bit naff. You want a bag you an sling over your shoulder, and a little make up bag. You don't want something you're going to worry about getting snagged, and some crappy man bag.

Ha! Blame away Wink And enjoy! I can introduce you to a whole dark world of expensive Balinese products if you wish lol. It's a slippery slope...

peaceanddove · 25/02/2022 16:52

We're flying to The Cayman Islands at Easter. I'll be wearing my trusty Hush harems, long sleeved t-shirt, cosy socks and a pashmina. Just be comfy, no one cares. But most importantly don't forget EAR PLUGS. I won't fly without them.

Sorry OP but this is a bit Hmm. You will stick out like a sore thumb because you are trying so hard. Wear what you want. I would leave the bag with friend.

I think is rather a mean comment. Until Covid, I flew in business (or occasionally First) mid-long haul at least twice a month for the past few years and passengers like the OP (who want to make a bit of effort for what is clearly a special treat) are not unusual. She certainly won't stand out. And even if she did, so what?! Let her enjoy her flight how she wants to.

If the mean comment is LV bag specific, well yes I get it. I'm not a LV fan either. You'd have to pay me to use LV. But some people love the brand and the OP won't stand out on a flight for having a LV bag. Some very good friends of mine fly weekly (one of them used to commute from London to New York each week) always in First and they both look like they've been mugged by LV every time. I'm not exaggerating. They have LV wheelie cases, washbags, belts, trainers, it goes on....I swear their combined outfits must be worth more than my car. It makes them happy. They get met by special services as they deplane and are whisked through the airport to their waiting Bentley. How the other half live. So the OP with her borrowed LV bag or 2 will be just fine. And happy! And surely her happiness is what counts?

Llamasally · 26/02/2022 07:19

I usually change if long haul in business, into yoga pants and a soft thin sweater, bed socks and moisturiser. Some good ideas here though for staying in the same outfit.

Juno22 · 26/02/2022 07:41

There's nothing wrong with the bag. I'm not a big LV fan but I have a large Neverfull which I use for travelling, whether it be business class, economy or EasyJet. It holds loads of stuff and it's lightweight and easy to find things in (I have one of those bag divider things in it).

Travelling business I dress for comfort so usually
Wide leg trousers, Me&Em are good
Long sleeved cotton t shirt
Soft cardigan
Trainers
Pashmina

KittenKong · 26/02/2022 07:48

When I used to go long haul - elasticated waisted wide legged wool trousers (comfy and warm). Short, light jumper, flat slip ons (socks£. Think comfort and layers - and take a large pashmina type wrap (I get cold).

Pugfostermum · 26/02/2022 07:48

I occasionally dip into threads like these as it reminds me how far I have come since my 20’s, when I used to waste hours of my life worrying about wanting designer labels and what other people thought of me. 🤣

Hahaha. Just what I was thinking. They smash the cabin temperature up in business usually. They are keen for you to sleep. No fanny will be happy sitting down in plastic for 12 hrs in 30c
